Richard L. "Dick" Bowe
A local musician whose skill and attention to detail was a pivotal part in the formation of Campbellsville University's orchestra has died.
Richard L. "Dick" Bower, 84, of New Columbia Road in Campbellsville died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, in Campbellsville.
His funeral was Friday, Dec. 3 at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville. Dr. James E. Jones and the Rev. Don Watson officiated. Burial was in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.
Bower, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, served as minister of music at First United Methodist Church for 31 years. He was one of the charter members of Campbellsville University's orchestra, a teacher and principal at Campbellsville High School for 10 years and an employee of Ingersoll-Rand Company for 15 years, retiring as plant manager.
It was his love of music that friends and colleagues remember about Bower.
"It goes without saying that Dick was a fine violinist," David McCullough, professor of music and director of bands at Campbellsville University said.
"However, beyond that he was a very pivotal figure in the early development of our orchestra here at Campbellsville University and also in the beginning of the Campbellsville Baptist Church orchestra."
Bower was a charter member of the orchestra, formed in 1995, but had to leave a few years ago due to illness. Robert Gaddis, dean of CU's school of music and conductor of the orchestra, said Bower was a perfectionist.
"He knew his parts and was very interested in making sure others knew theirs," he said.
Barry Bertram, who first met Bower when Bower was directing First United Methodist Choir, said his perfectionist attitude was endearing.
"He was a perfectionist but you didn't mind working hard for him," Bertram said.
"He could play the choir just like he could play the violin."
Gaddis said that Bower was, for many years, "The only violinist in town."
That made him a very sought-after musician.
"He played in about every church cantata in town," Gaddis said.
A professional violinist out west, Bower seemed to relish every opportunity to perform.
"I've never known a musician who had a greater love of playing," McCullough said.
"I'm sure, if it had been possible, he would have devoted his last bit of energy to playing his violin."
"He was a wonderful musician and very compassionate toward musicians," Gaddis said. "He loved to associate with other musicians."
McCullough said that Bower's talent and friendship was a gift to the community.
"He will be greatly missed," he said. "However, we were tremendously blessed to have had him as a member of our community and as our friend."
Son of the late William Bower and Helen Frazee-Bower, Bower was born in Escondido, Calif., on Feb. 4, 1920. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
