Martha V. Scherder, friendly phone operator
For years, Martha V. Scherder of Ft. Mitchell was one of those welcome service-industry workers: A pleasant and helpful telephone operator.
Miss Scherder worked 34 years as an operator and then a clerk for the Cincinnati Bell Telephone Co.

Miss Scherder died Wednesday at Highlands of Ft. Thomas Nursing Home in Ft. Thomas. She was 79.
When she began her career, Miss Scherder operated an old-fashioned switchboard out of a home in Erlanger.
Her calm, quiet voice made her a natural, said Mrs. Ford.
Miss Scherder eventually was transfered to Cincinnati, where she worked as a clerk.
After her retirement in 1970, she continued to have a busy social life. She was a member of St. Paul Church in Florence and active with a fan club for the Cincinnati Reds.
"She was an avid Rosie Red, " said Mrs. Ford.
"She would join the fan club every year and she would go on Reds' road trips with them when they were playing places like Chicago.
"It seems like anybody who came in touch with her just fell in love with her."

Victor Gallenstein of Maysville was a dedicated family man, loyal friend, hardworking employee and supporter of his church - but he would have been mortified to be publicly recognized.
