Ernestine Elder, entertained seniors
Ernestine Elder was a big fan of 1940s-era singer Sophie Tucker and enjoyed going to nursing homes where she would imitate her idol.
Mrs. Elder, 82, of Pleasant Ridge, Ohio, formerly of Taylor Mill, died at 4:30 a.m. Monday at Ridge Terrace South nursing home in Pleasant Ridge.
She was a hostess for the Golden Lamb restaurant in Lebanon and for the Gibson Hotel in Cincinnati.
Mrs. Elder, who grew up in Covington, was fond of singers such as Ms. Tucker and Pearl Bailey, who passed through Cincinnati on the club circuit in the '40s.
"She enjoyed imitating Sophie Tucker anywhere they had a piano bar," said a brother, Glenn Lovell of Cincinnati. "She had a nice voice. In later years, she went to nursing homes and sang. She was a ham. Once she got hold of a mike, she did not let go."
Her husband, Charles Elder, died in 1972. They lived in Morrow, Ohio, where they bought a mansion thought to have been the first Holiday Inn, Mr. Lovell said.
Mrs. Elder donated the organ from that house to Trinity United Methodist Church in Latonia, where she was a member, her brother said.
