William Scalf
William Thomas Scalf, 88, of Rockhouse Fork, Sidney, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, November 21, 2004, at Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, Kentucky
Born March 11, 1916, in Pike County, Kentucky, to the late Willie Scalf and Birdie Alice Varney Scalf, he was a retired coal miner and of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Toy Thomas Scalf; sister, Mint Runyon; and brother, Luther Scalf.
Surviving are his wife, Dora L. Gross Scalf of Sidney, Kentucky; daughter, Leon Gibson of Clay City, Kentucky; sisters, Augusta Ray of Pikeville, Kentucky, Frances Ray of Belfry, Kentucky, Mary Jackson of Stone, Kentucky and Victoria Murphy of Pikeville, Kentucky; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 24, 2004, 1 p.m., at Rogers Funeral Home with Rev. William Akers officiating. Burial will follow at Family cemetery, Rockhouse Fork, Sidney, Kentucky
Serving as pallbearers are George Thompson, Jack Clever, Claude, Michael and Billy Ray.
Visitation will be held after 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rogers Funeral Home.

Margie McKinney
Margie McKinney, 53, of Inez, Kentucky, passed away Monday, November 1, 2004, at her residence.
Born April 23, 1951, in Lawrence County, Kentucky, to June Smith of Inez, Kentucky and the late William R. Smith, she was a certified nurse assistant at Martin county Health Care Facility. She was a member of Vineyard United Baptist Church.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband Don McKinney.
Surviving are her son, Terry (Kathy) McKinney of Inez, Kentucky; daughter, Maria Preece of Inez, Kentucky; brothers, Robert Smith of Louisa, Kentucky, Glen Smith of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, David Smith of Inez, Kentucky, Jed Smith of Inez, Kentucky and Paul Smith of Inez, Kentucky; sisters, Linda Cox of Inez, Kentucky, Tammy Slone of Circleville, Ohio and Peggy Williamson of Inez, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews; and countless brothers and sisters in her church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 4, 2004, 1 p.m., at Vineyard United Baptist Church with Doc Maynard and David Hannah officiating. Burial will follow in the Family cemetery, Inez, Kentucky
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Tuesday at Vineyard United Baptist Church and until time of service on Thursday.

Buster Scalf
Buster Scalf, 71, of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, November 11, 2004, at ARH Skilled Nursing Facility, South Williamson, Kentucky
Born February 14, 1933, in Heenon, Kentucky, to the late Oliver Scalf and Edna Maynard Scalf, he was a retired carpenter and a member of West End Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Sophia McCoy Scalf; son, Art (Dee) Scalf of Columbus, Ohio; daughters, Connie Scalf of Columbus, Ohio, Janie (Tom) Maccabee of Columbus, Ohio and Wilma (Billy) Thompson of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Lou Williamson of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, Lindel (Clifford) Hatfield of Hardy, Kentucky; one very special niece, Lois Thompson of Richlands, Va.; 14 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 13, 2004, 2 p.m., at Rogers Funeral Home with Carl Hess and Ersal Ray Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Family cemetery, Slaters Branch, Kentucky Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Friday at Rogers Funeral Home with special service at 7 p.m.

Clay Wells
Clay Wells, born March 11, 1929, in Tomahawk, Kentucky, passed away Monday, November 8, 2004.
Mr. Wells joined the Marines September 6, 1946. After boot camp at Paris Island, S.C., he was assigned to NMD Yorktown, Va. He served at the following locations: Quantico; Camp Lejeune; Camp Pendleton; Norfolk, Va.; Naval Gun Factory, Washington, DC; Korea; and Bethesda, Md.
He participated in battle in the summer and fall of 1951 with the 7th Marines. He was wounded in September, 1951, and was sent to the National Naval Medical Center, where he was placed on the retired list, January 1954.
His awards and decorations include Korean Service Medal, United Nations National Defense President Unit Citation, Good Conduct, and Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and Korean War Medal. He is a life member of the 1st Division Association, a past commander of the Marine Corps League and MOH. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner and a member of the Martin County Development Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Janice Wells; brother, Carlie Ward; and sisters, Olive Birch, Thelma Schverman, Goldia Jump and Arizona Wade.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Ann Ward Wells; son, Clayton Wells of Inez, Kentucky and his fiance Leigh Ann Hacker of Louisa, Kentucky; daughters, Angela Wells Coffey and husband Jagger of Richmond, Kentucky and Annette Ray Williams and husband Arnold of Georgetown, Kentucky; sons, Paul Alvin Ray, and Gary Meade and wife Kim of Paintsville, Kentucky; grandchildren, Gary Michael Meade of California, Kyle Meade of Paintsville, Kentucky, Jacki Ray, Jessi Ray, Brad Ray and Avery Ray of Pilgrim, Kentucky, Megan Sims of Georgetown, Kentucky, and Samuel Coffey and Nathan Coffey of Richmond, Kentucky; one great grandchild, Paris Meade of California; brother, Eugene Ward of Inez, Kentucky; and sisters, Modell Sinning of Highland Heights, Kentucky, Oretha Kinman of Florence, Kentucky and Eulah Villines of Centerville, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 11, 2004, 1 p.m. at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home with Rev. Linny Marr officiating. Burial will follow at the Saltwell cemetery, Inez, Kentucky Visitation was held at the funeral home Wednesday evening.

Mellie Slater
Mellie Roberts Slater, 91, of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, was the last surviving child of the late Daniel Roberts and Ettie Newsome Roberts. She died Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, W.Va.
Born March 15, 1913, at Robinson Creek, Kentucky, she was a homemaker and had worked at Shurtliff's Dry Cleaners, Pikeville, Kentucky and R.H. Hobb's, Williamson, W.Va. She was a member of Old Pond Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lester L. Slater; four sisters, Margie Maggard, Maxie Mae Odom, Maudie Green and Melpha Smith; and four brothers, Millard, Millis, Merlin and Milford Roberts.
Surviving are her adopted sister, Lalor Ann Dotson of Williamson, W.Va.; special nephew, James D. Maggard of Lake Wales, Fla.; and host of other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 13, 2004, 11 a.m., at Rogers Funeral Home with Mike Smith, Mike Elswick and others officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Kentucky Her nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Rogers Funeral Home with special services both nights at 7 p.m.

Phyllis Holloway
Phylis Jean Holloway, 64, of Pikeville, Kentucky, passed away Monday, October 25, 2004 at Pikeville Medical Center.
Born October 16, 1940 in Pikeville, she was a daughter of the late Johnny and Ada McCoy Maggard and Molly Dillon Maggard.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by two brothers, William Eldean Maggard and Dale Edward Maggard.
She was an executive secretary for Pike County Coal and enjoyed traveling and attending her grandchildren's activities.
Survivors include: three sons, Keith T. (Lisa Ghormley) Thacker of Lower Johns Creek, Kentucky; Wayne (Beverly) Holloway of Pikeville, Kentucky and Joshua Joseph Barone of Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Vicki Darlene (James Curtis) Case of Mullins, Kentucky and Donna Thacker (Lindsey) Nichols of Lower Johns Creek, Kentucky; four brothers, Donnie (Eleanor) Maggard of Johns Creek, Kentucky; Samuel (Donna) Maggard of Garden Village, Kentucky; Darrel (Becky) Maggard of Johns Creek, Kentucky and Bruce Maggard of Pikeville, Kentucky; four sisters, Betty (Delmon) Shortt of Broadview, Ill.; Linda (Smitty) Bevins of Garden Village, Kentucky; Janet (Johnny) Green of Sylvester, W.Va.; and Kandi (Donnie) Hall of Island Creek, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Ashli, Felicia, Joe, Channing, Cameron, Krista and Karrie; two great-grandchildren, Kaylin and Andrew and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m., Thursday, October 31, 2004, at the West Funeral Home chapel with Tim McClanahan and Bill Staggs officiating.
Burial followed in the Annie E. Young cemetery at Chloe Creek, Pikeville, Kentucky

Nathan Cope
Nathan Vernon Cope, 67, of Milwaukee, Wisc., formerly of the Pond Creek, Kentucky, area, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2004, at Columbia Hospital, Milwaukee, Wisc.
Born Oct. 18, 1936, in Pike County, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Edward and Dollie Madison Cope.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cope was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Cope, Walter Cope and David Cope.
He was a motel clerk, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include a son, Vernon Taylor Cope; a daughter, Loraine Young; a brother, Earl Eddie Cope of New Camp, Kentucky; two sisters, Virginia Buckhannon of Forest Hills, Kentucky; and Marie Scalf of Williamson, W.Va.; and several grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at the Rogers Funeral Hope chapel, Belfry, Kentucky, with Rev. Bob Kincaid officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens at Maher, W.Va.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be after 5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, and Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at the funeral home chapel.

Delores Prater
Delores Prater, 68, of Freeburn, Kentucky, died Thursday, September 23, 2004, at her residence.
Born October 12, 1935, at Woodman, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Homer Blankenship and Mila Tygart Blankenship.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two infant twin children, a grandson, Keith Prater and a sister.
She was a homemaker, a member of the Primitive Baptist faith, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Ruth Rebekahs.
She is survived by her husband, Willie Prater of Freeburn, Kentucky; sons, Gregory Dean (Rhonda) Prater of Freeburn, Kentucky; daughter, Sharon (Mike) Holland of Pikeville, Kentucky; brother, Elliot Blankenship of London, Kentucky; sisters, Geneva Mounts of London, Kentucky, Lurala Sizemore of Ohio, and Florence Dick of Phelps, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Dreama Hager and Shawn Stump, both of Phelps, Kentucky, and Brent Blankenship of Pikeville, Kentucky; four great-grandchildren, Kennedy and McKinley Hager, Tyler and Hannah Blankenship.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, September 26, 2004, at Phelps Funeral Services Chapel with the Revs. Harold Thornsbury and Darrell Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in the Buddy Mounts cemetery at Freeburn, Kentucky
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will begin Friday, September 24, 2004, at the chapel at 6 p.m.
