Lester Barker
Lester Barker, 77, of Forest Hills, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at 1:10 a.m. after a brief illness at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky
He was born on January 30, 1927 at Elbert, W.Va. He was the son of Eules and Lissie Barker of Chattaroy, W.Va.
He was preceded in death by his father Eules.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gay Ruth Stanley Barker of Forest Hills, Kentucky; son, William Lester (Bill) Barker of Forest Hills, Kentucky; daughter, Barbara Gail (Steve) Mickey, also of Forest Hills, Kentucky; one grandson, William Bradley (Brad) (Stephanie) Barker of Somerset, Kentucky; one great-grandchild, Zachary Braden Barker of Somerset, Kentucky; ; brother, Earl G. Barker of Forest Hills, Kentucky; three nieces and three nephews; and a host of friends.
Lester was an active member of the Forest Hills First Baptist Church.
He loved the Lord and was a Christian for 54 years.
His life evolved around his church and family. He was the music director and a trustee for the church.
For many years he was the lead singer for the gospel group, the Christianaires.
He loved carpentry, woodworking and making crafts for family and friends.
A World War II veteran, Lester was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army During his service, he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Army Occupational Medal.
He was a car man for the N&S Railway for 42 years.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 20, 2004, at Forest Hills First Baptist Church with Carl Hess and Mike Kohari officiating.
Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Kentucky
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Rogers Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Steve Mickey, Brad Barker, John Phillips, Chris Phillips, Henry Banks, Harold Farley, Bruce Pauley and James David Slater.
Honorary pallbearers are Bill Barker, Gifford Varney, Claude Dotson, Eugene Pinson and Brian Farley.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rogers Funeral Home.
Patty Gooslin
Patty Jean "Patricia" McCown Gooslin, 54, of Pikeville, Kentucky, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home, Hambley Boulevard, Pikeville. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young cemetery, Chloe Road, Pikeville.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home.
Gertrude Ratliff
Gertrude Deskins Ratliff, 91, of Pikeville, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at her home.
Born August 7, 1913, in Kimper (Pike County), Kentucky, to the late Ora Phillips Deskins and J.B. Deskins, she was a homemaker.
She was affiliated with the Church of Christ and was baptized around 1926.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, whom she married
September 29, 1930, Phil Ratliff; three sons, Farrell Clayton, James Richard, and John Talmadge Ratliff; brother, Edgar Deskins; and sister, Gladys Deskins.
Surviving are her son, Daryl Edward Ratliff (wife, Alice) of Pikeville, Kentucky; sister, Irene Burke of River View, Mich.; three grandchildren, James B., Phillip Q. and Ashley Ratliff; four great grandchildren, James Tyler, Christopher B., William T. and Peyton Ratliff; and her caregivers, Willavene Tackett and Vera Adkins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 21, 2004, 11 a.m., at J.W. Call & Son Funeral Home with Dr. Mickey Anders officiating. Burial will follow at Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville, Kentucky
Serving as pallbearers are James B. Ratliff, Philip Q. Ratliff, Tyler Ratliff, Jack Deskins, James Brown, Terry Trimble and D. Blake Robinson.
Honorary pallbearers are H.D. Ratliff, Garrett (Shorty) Deskins, Phyllis Faulkner and Larry Coleman.
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday at J.W. Call & Son Funeral Home.

Freeda Crigger
Freeda Crigger, 88, of Forest Hills, Kentucky, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at her residence.
She was born on Jan. 18, 1916, in Stone, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Sam and Anna Mullins. She was a homemaker and of the Regular Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Crigger; four brothers, Arthel Mullins, Ones Mullins, Babe Mullins and John Mullins; and two sisters, Ruby Farley and Erma Faye Smith.
Mrs. Crigger is survived by two sons, Mayferd Crigger of Dayton, Ohio, and Larry (Judy) Crigger of Hardy, Kentucky; two brothers, Reaford Mullins of San Diego, Calif., and Clifford Mullins of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at the Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Kentucky, with David Crigger and Richard Staton officiating. Burial will follow in the Davis Memorial Gardens, Huddy, Kentucky
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 9, at the funeral home.

Alex Fowler, 29, of Richmond, Kentucky, formerly of Elkhorn City, Kentucky, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at Bailey Funeral Home in Elkhorn City.
Burial will follow in Elkhorn City cemetery.
Visitation began after 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Clyde McCoy
Clyde McCoy, 73, of Belfry, Kentucky, passed away Monday, August 16, 2004, at Williamson Memorial Hos-pital, Williamson, W.Va.
Born May 12, 1931, in Sharondale, Kentucky, to the late Charley McCoy and Maude Ramey McCoy, he was a retired coal miner with Massey Coal.
Mr. McCoy was a member of United Mine Workers of America, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the American Legion and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude and Buddy McCoy.
Surviving are his son, Freddie Keith McCoy of Belfry, Kentucky; daughter, Belinda Williamson of Canada, Kentucky; brother, Danny McCoy of Belfry, Kentucky; two sisters, Helen McCoy Smith of Williamson, W.Va. and Rita Dehner of Florence, Kentucky; and special niece and nephew, Jordan McCoy and Daleaha McCoy; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a host of other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, August 19, 2004, at Rogers Funeral Home with Bob Werntz officiating.
Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Kentucky DAV rites will be performed by the Belfry Chapter #141 Disabled American Veterans.
His nephews will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers are Woody Lovell, Jerry Stuart, Buddy Williams, Jim Varney, Jimmy Watson, Trey Watson and Saul Williams.
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Johnny Lockard
Johnny Bruce Lockard, 52, of McCarr, Kentucky, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky
He was born Dec. 15, 1951, in Pike County, Kentucky, a son of the late Auther and Rosa Belle Roberts Lockard.
Mr. Lockard was also preceded in death by two brothers.
He was a disabled coal miner and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Zetta Lockard of McCarr, Kentucky; two daughters, Selena (Dale) Staggs of Ransom, Kentucky, and Johna Mae Lockard of the home; one stepson, Tyler Mounts of the home; one brother, Freddie Ray Lockard of McCarr; four sisters, Deanna "Bo Bo" Rutherford of Boone County, W.Va., Kathy "Polly" Moore of McCarr, Patricia "Pit" Stump of Buskirk, Kentucky, and Sherry Adkins of McCarr; one grandson, Gregory Dillon Staggs.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at First Samaria Primitive Baptist Church at Ransom, Kentucky, with Elder Elmer Smith and Elder Kenneth Hall officiating.
Burial will follow in Anderson-Hatfield cemetery at McCarr.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, and anytime Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at the church.

Dr. Luis Gomez
Dr. Luis Michael Gomez, 73, of Phelps, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2004, at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington, Kentucky
Born June 21, 1931, in Monterrey, Mexico, he was a self-employed medical doctor. He was of the Catholic faith and was a former member of the Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife, Margaritta Ramirez Gomez; one son, Luis Gomez; daughters, Maria Blankenship (Allen Blankenship), Sandra May (Todd May) and Anna Tackett (Michael Tackett; and seven grandchildren, Jessica, Danielle, Andrea, Cory, Payton, Jesse and Emily Grace.
Memorial service will be held Thursday, August 19, 2004, at 7 p.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church, Pikeville, Kentucky
In lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, Dr. Luis Gomez Memorial, P.O. Box 21903, Lexington, KY 40522-1903.

June Barker
Sally June Barker, 79, of Forest Hills, Kentucky, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky
She was born on June 1, 1925, in Chattaroy to the late Wallace Lee and Reba Noe Slater. She was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the Chattaroy Missionary Baptist Church where she was active in the WMU, choir and a former Sunday school teacher.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Lynn Slater; and a son, Richard Lee Barker.
Mrs. Barker is survived by her husband, Earl G. Barker Sr.; two sons, Earl Gilbert "Gibby" Barker Jr. and his wife Eva Carole of Northfork, W.Va., and David Lester Barker and his wife Patty of Chattaroy; two daughters, Susan Joan "Joanie" England of Slater's Branch, Kentucky, and Leigh Ann Smith and her husband James of Williamson; one brother, Paul Neil (Angie) Slater of Slater's Branch; two sisters, Jean Tucker of New Richmond, Ohio, and Bette Joan Sanson of Mammoth, Ariz.; grandchildren, Jimmy Lynn Barker, Earl Gilbert "Rusty" Barker III, Dawn Michelle Johnson, Eules Gale Barker, Ike Jason England, Brandon Clay Hatfield and Ashley Suzanne Hatfield; great-grandchildren, Jeff Barker, Rachael Barker, Kelsey Marie Barker, Casey Johnson, Taylor Brooke Barker; step-grandchildren, David R.
