Billy Ferrell

Billy Ferrell, age 67, a resident of McCarr, Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, January 30, 2005, at his residence.

Born on April 19, 1937, at Buskirk, Kentucky, the son of the late Fred and Lydia Jackson Ferrell, he was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. He was a retired truck driver and of the Church of God faith. He was also preceded in death by two grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Rosetta Marcum Ferrell of McCarr, Kentucky; sons, Fred Ferrell and William Eric Ferrell both of Jacksonville, Fla., Gene (Miranda) Ferrell of McCarr, Kentucky, Paul (Lisa) Ferrell of Phelps, Kentucky, Ronnie Murphy of Beech Creek, W.Va. and stepson, Glen Roger Cook III of Covington, Kentucky; daughters, Angela Jean Ferrell of McCarr, Kentucky and Diane Murphy of Beech Creek, W.Va.; stepdaughters, Sabrina Lyall of Logan, W.Va. and Rebecca (Benjamin) Prater of Slaters Branch, Kentucky; brothers, Emmette and Henry Hutchinson both of Matewan, W.Va.; and sister, Emma Lou Hutchinson of Columbus, Ga.; and 18 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 3, 2005, 12 noon as the R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, Phelps, Kentucky, with Rev. Denny May and Rev. Tommy Prater officiating. Burial will follow in the Buskirk Memorial cemetery at Buskirk. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin after 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the chapel with services Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of the R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, Phelps, Kentucky

Johnetta Webb
Johnetta Jess Webb, 57, of LaFollette, Tenn., passed away Friday, Feb. 18, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at the Big Elk United Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Mt. View Memory Garden at Maher, W.Va.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at the church.

Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home in Inez, Kentucky, is in charge of arrangements.

Jesse Jackson

Jesse Davis Jackson, 45, of Salyersville, Kentucky, formerly of Phelps, Kentucky, departed this life on Friday, January 28, 2005, in the loving care of his family at Cabell-Huntington Hospital, Huntington, W.Va.

Born February 14, 1959 in Grundy, Va. to Chester Jackson of Iaeger, W.Va. and the late Lillie Mae Hurley, he was a painter and of the Protestant faith.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Blackburn.

Surviving are his son, Douglas Jesse Jackson; brother, Roger Wolford of Denton, Kentucky; and sisters, Kay Prater of Stopover, Kentucky, Glenna Anderson of Catawba, Va., Patricia Justice of West Liberty, Kentucky, and Linda Cross of Roanoke, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 2, 2005, 1 p.m., at Phelps Funeral Services' Chapel with Rev. Ermal Fields officiating. Burial will follow at Frankie Sincell cemetery at Phelps, Kentucky Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at the chapel, at 6 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Service at Phelps, Kentucky

Joan Crews

Joan Crews, 83, of Hardy, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2005, at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Kentucky

Born May 6, 1921, in Virginia, to the late Mary Lavender Baker, she was a retired cook.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by Henerita and Ben Cole who raised her; sister, Callie Beth Lavender; husband, James Crews; and her father.

Surviving are one son, Lester Crews of Corona, Cal.; three daughters, Zonnie Bowles of New York, Brenda Sullivan of St. Paul, Minn. and Cookie Crews of Crestwood, Kentucky; brother, Henry Lavender; sister, Annie Baker; 10 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 3, 2005, 1 p.m., at Rogers Funeral Home with Rev. Louis Humes officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Maher, W.Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 2, 2005, 6 - 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Kentucky

Alex Cline
Alex Randal Cline, 46, of Kimper, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2005, at his home.

Born April 15, 1958, in Pikeville, Kentucky, to the late Jack Cline and Carol Jean Cline, he was a coal miner at McCoy Elkhorn and of the Church of God faith.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Fannie Dotson.

Surviving are his sons, Jack Randal Cline of Paintsville, Kentucky and Alex Brent Cline of Tennessee; daughter, Vicky Nicole Mollette of Paintsville; sister, Tammy Cox of Bean Station in Tennessee; maternal grandfather, Clyde Dotson; four grandchildren, Audrea Nicole Mollette, Alexandra Paige Mollette, Kendra Lynn Mollette and Lauren LaShea Cline.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Service, Inc. of Phelps, Kentucky

Ray Puckett

Ray Puckett, 81, of Elkhorn City, Kentucky, passed away Monday, January 31, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 2, 2005, 11 a.m., at Bailey Funeral Home with burial following at the Dow-Brooks cemetery, Draffin, Kentucky

Visitation will be held at Bailey Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Inc., Elkhorn City, Kentucky

Basil Fitchpatrick

Basil Fitchpatrick, 69, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2005. Born March 4, 1935, to the late Leander and Lydia Fitchpatrick, he was a truck driver with Cardinal Foods and a member of Little Bell United Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Ethel Kirk, Vicia Marcum, Howard Marcum, Thomas Fitchpatrick and Robert Fitchpatrick; and grandchildren, Clay Muncey and Elizabeth Gahn.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Gloria Fitchpatrick; sons, Floyd (Rose) Munsey and Jonathon (Judy) Fitchpatrick; daughters, Minerva Fitchpatrick, Wanda (Gary) Gahn, Frieda (Eddie) Hildebrand, Theresa (David) Williamson and Cathy (Steve) Starkey; brothers, Fred Fitchpatrick, Noah Fitchpatrick and Willis Pitchpatrick; sisters, Shirlene Meade, Lottie Sturgill and Amanda Mollett; 10 grandchildren, Bethany, Laurie, Mark, Matthew, Ryan, Lydia, Zachery, Dustin, Joseph and Caitlin; and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 3, 2005, 11 a.m., at Neely Branch Baptist Church with burial to follow at Newsome Ridge cemetery.

Visitation will begin 5 p.m. Wednesday and will be held until time of service, at the church.

Charlie Edmiston, 78, of Canada, Kentucky, died Sunday, January 30, 2005 in Charleston General Hospital, Charleston, W.Va.

Billy Ferrell, 68, of McCarr, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2005, at his residence.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, Phelps, Kentucky

Dannie Bailey

Dannie Eugene Bailey was born December 29, 1943 at Hardy, Kentucky He died January 30, 2005.

His parents, Reverend and Mrs. Clarence Bailey; a brother, Ray Bailey; and his father-in-law, Elder Ernest Cochran, preceded him in death.

His wife, Gail Bailey and their children, Mark, Kim and Lauren Bailey of Jacksonville, N.C. and Aaron, Kelly and Tyler Bailey of Raleigh, N.C. and those children to come survive him. He is also survived by a brother, Reverend Don Bailey of Clarksville, Tenn.; and a sister, Jerry (Mrs. Jim) Rosborough of Lake Forest, Cal.; mother-in-law, Mrs. Audrey Cochran of Sidney, Kentucky; and a host of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews; one godson, Corey Morris of Jacksonville, survives him. Many friends and neighbors will miss him.

Dan served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division in the Dominican Republican and the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He attended Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C.

Dan was an insurance agent with Allstate for 29 years. Among his achievements are Distinguished Agency, Conference of Champions, Life Millionaire and Honor Ring.

He was a past member of the Jacksonville/Onslow Chamber of Commerce and the Jacksonville/Onslow Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the VFW and DAV.

Dan is a child of God who attended Northwoods United Methodist Church where a memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 2, by Reverend Rick Moser. Friends will be received at Jones Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6 - 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gladys Maynard
Gladys Hazel Stepp Maynard, 93, of Hatfield, Kentucky, died Wednesday, December 8, 2004, in Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Kentucky

Born February 2. 1911, at Whitepost, Kentucky, which later became Hatfield, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late David Crockett Stepp and Alice Vivian Lowe Stepp.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 72-years, Richard Delmon Maynard, who passed away February 1, 2000.

She was a homemaker and she also operated Maynard's Grocery at Hatfield, Kentucky, from 1943 to 1965.

She was a member of the Rogers Park Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years.

She was the granddaughter of two pioneer families of the Big Creek area. Her paternal grandparents were the late John Stepp and Levica Parsley Stepp and her maternal grandparents were the late Orison Byrd Madison Lowe and Elizabeth Runyon Lowe. Her life touched many people over the years and she was loved by family and friends.

Her survivors include daughters, Gypsy Ruth (the late Norvil Jr., ) Sparks of Hatfield, Kentucky, with whom she made her home after the death of her husband, and Gladys Vivian (Ballard) Friend of Deluth, Ga.; grandchildren, Nyoka (Eugene) Runyon of Hatfield, Kentucky, Deborah (David) Smith of Hatfield, Kentucky, Michael Friend of Atlanta, Ga., David (Connie) Friend of La Fayette, Ga., and Evelyn (Bill) Epperson of Alphretta, Ga.: great grandchildren, Kevin (Mary) Runyon of Hatfield, Kentucky, Keith (Beverly) Runyon of Hatfield, Kentucky, Cristy Chisholm of Arizona, Misty (Johnny) Carroll of Hatfield, Kentucky, Matthew (Renea) Smith of Red Jacket, W.Va., Ryan and Johnathan Friend of La Fayette, Ga., and Josh Epperson of Alphretta, Ga.; great-great grandchildren, Casey and Kaylee Chisholm of Arizona, David Anthony Carroll of Tennessee, Richard and Katie Carroll of Hatfield, Kentucky, Kyler Easton Runyon of Hatfield, Kentucky, and Miranda and Cory Smith of Red Jacket, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, December 11, 2004, at the Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Mike Kohari and Rick Gannon officiating. Burial will follow in the Stepp Family cemetery at Hatfield, Kentucky

Honorary pallbearers will be Don Lowe Jr., Gifford Varney, Doug Pauley and Sid Copley.

Active pallbearers will be Ballard Friend, Eugene Runyon, Kevin Runyon, Keith Runyon, Matthew Smith, David Friend and Michael Friend.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m., Thursday and anytime Friday at the funeral home.

Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Kentucky, has assisted the family with arrangements.

Sarah Williamson
Sarah (Ett) Hunt Williamson, 77, of Hayes, Va., formerly of Belfry, Kentucky, passed away October 11, 2004 in Virginia.

The funeral service was held October 15, 2004 at Hogg Funeral Home, Hayes, Va.

Robert C. Burris

Robert Clayton "Bob" Burris, 73, who taught school for 31 years at Belfry High School before retiring and serving in the United States Army, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at his home in South Williamson, Kentucky

He was born Jan. 19, 1932 in South Williamson and was a son of Magdalene Clark Burris of South Williamson and the late Clayton Burris.

He was preceded in death by his father; grandparents, Ida Clark and Mr. and Mrs. James Burris; and uncles, John Burris, Raymond Burris, Floyd Burris, Eugene Clark and Geoffrey Clark.

Burris was a 1950 graduate of Williamson High School and a graduate of Georgetown College, Georgetown, Kentucky, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in education. During his military service, he spent two years in France.

He was a faithful and devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Williamson, where he served as a deacon. He was a Mason and a member of the Kentucky Teachers Association.

His hobbies and interests included genealogy and his work with the Williamson High School Reunion Committee which he enjoyed so much. Bob was a devoted son and caregiver to his beloved mother, who survives. He was a faithful friend to many and will be greatly missed.

Survivors also include an uncle, Bob Clark of Ripley, Ohio; an aunt, Alice "Jo" Varney of Ocala, Fla.; a special cousin, Stephen Varney of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, and a host of cousins whom he loved.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson. The Rev. Roger Tinnel will officiate and deacons of the First Baptist Church of Williamson will serve as pallbearers.

Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Kentucky, under the direction of Weaver Mortuary.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday evening, Jan. 31, 2005, at the mortuary.

Mildred Layne
Mildred Mae Adams Layne, 79, of Kokomo, Ind., formerly of Ashland, Kentucky and Pikeville, Kentucky passed away Monday, December 6, 2004 at Howard Regional Hospital after a long battle with diabetes.

She was born July 3, 1925, in Jenkins, Kentucky, daughter of Nathaniel Jackson and Leona Etta (Plummer) Adams.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, December 10, 2004, at Steen Funeral Home Marshall Steen Chapel with the Rev. Charles Stewart and Rev. Ronnie Mays officiating.

Visiting will be Thursday evening from 6 - 9 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be a committal service at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at Johnson Memorial cemetery in Pikeville, Kentucky
