Laverna Scott
Laverna Scott, 76, of Hardy, Kentucky, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.
She was born on July 22, 1926, a daughter of the late George and Laverna McCune. She was a retired assistant postmaster serving at the Hardy Post Office and a member of the Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Lewis Scott; two brothers, D.L. McCune and John Henry McCune; and one sister, Pearl Davidson.
She is survived by two sons, Randy (Linda) Scott of Hardy, and Terry (Judy) Scott of Sanford, N.C.; one brother, Thomas Quinten Stanley of Seaside, Ore.; and one sister, Emma June Bell of Vienna, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Kimberly Renee Miller, Kelli Ann Sowards, Seth Allen Scott, Charlette Ann Lovick and James Randolph Scott II; and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Monday, May 19, 2003, at the Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Kentucky, with the Revs. Johnny Hatfield and Curtis Wellman officiating. Burial will follow in the Bogar cemetery at Hardy.
Pallbearers will be Seth Scott, James Scott, Steve Sowards, Mark Lovick, Richard Miller, Scott Bell and nephews.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Sunday, May 18, with special services beginning at 7 p.m. with Larry Hubbard officiating.
Marlene Maynard
Marlene Maynard, 68, of Pinsonfork, Kentucky, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at the Skilled Nursing Center at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky
She was born on May 11, 1935, in Pike County, Kentucky, to the late Della and June May Maynard. She was a retired teacher, having taught in Huntington Beach, Calif.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Paula Sue Swift.
She is survived by one niece and one nephew and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 19, 2003, at the Rogers Funeral Home with Jim Tom King officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Kentucky
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday, May 18, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Billy Ray
Bill Ray, 77, of Stopover, Kentucky, passed away Monday, May 26, 2003, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital in Pikeville, Kentucky
He was born on December 18, 1925 in Pike County, Kentucky, the son of the late Charlie and America (Lockhart) Ray. He was also preceded in death by infant son, Jerry Darrell Ray; brother, L.C. Prater; and sister, Marie Justice. He was a retired coal miner from Chisholm Coal Co., a member of the UMWA and a member of the Phelps First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Verline Blankenship Ray of Stopover, Kentucky, ; sons, William (Freda Mae) Ray, Gary Ray and Joe Ray, all of Stopover, Kentucky; Clyde Ray of Chattanooga, Tenn.; daughters, Shelia (Steve) Presley of Greenfield, IN, Doris (Randy) Stiltner of Kimper, Kentucky, Billie Jean (Mike) Hackney of Phelps, Kentucky, Sadie Mae (Eugene) Pruitt of Jamboree, Kentucky; brother, Ernest Prater of Stopover, Kentucky; grandchildren, Sabrina and Rebecca Dotson, Chris and Eric Ray, Shawn Ray, Harley Hackney, Gary and Marcus Ray, David Pruitt and Melissa Sargent; and four grand grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 30, 2003, 1 p.m., at the R.S. Jones and Son Funeral Home with officiating ministers Marvin Casey, Dewitt Furrow and Harold Layne. Burial will follow in the Ray Family cemetery at Stopover.
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the chapel with services nightly at 7 p.m.

John Henry Daniels
John Henry Daniels, 77, of Majestic, Kentucky, died May 27, 2003, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital. Born March 11, 1926, in Majestic, Kentucky, to the late Cecil Daniels and Viola Colley Daniels, he was a retired coal miner from Old Ben Coal Company. He attended the Barranshee Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Daniels; infant son, Jackie Wayne Daniels; brothers, Albert, Holly, Jason, Robert, James and Ruddo Daniels.
Surviving are his sons, Richard Daniels of Majestic, Kentucky, John Daniels of Cedar, WV, William Daniels of Cedar, WV and Ronald Daniels of Ransom, Kentucky; daughters, Stella Estepp of Williamson, WV, Kathy Ford of Williamson, WV, Mary Mounts of Cedar, WV, Donna Shirvastivas of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, Debbie Smith of North Matewan, WV and Crystal Norman of Freeburn, Kentucky; brother, Henry Daniels of Lynn, WV; sisters, Zella Christian of Freeburn, Kentucky, Leona Prater of Edgarton, WV, Lilly Daniels of Majestic, Kentucky, and Lea Justice of Majestic, Kentucky; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 30, 2003, at 1 p.m., at Baranshee Church of God with Revs. Bobby Dale Wolford and Doug Maynard officiated. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Cedar, WV. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Baranshee Church of God with services both nights at 7 p.m.

Audrey Patricia Smith, 68, of Marengo, Ill., formerly of Ransom, Kentucky, died Saturday, May 17, 2003 at her residence in Marengo, Ill.

Fannie Jenkins
Fannie Jenkins, 74, of Phelps, Kentucky, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2003 at the Good Shepherd Community Nursing Center in Phelps, Kentucky
She was born on June 25, 1928, the daughter of the late Helen Jenkins. She was a homemakers.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2003, 10 a.m. at the Jenkins Family cemetery in Red Boiling Springs, Tenn. with Brother David Wilson officiating.

Jimmie Bailey
Jimmie W. Bailey, 65, of Inez, Kentucky, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, in Inez.
He was born on Jan. 14, 1938, in Johnson County, Kentucky, a son of Onita Bailey and the late Wiley W. Bailey. He was a retired miner from Wolf Creek Collieries.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Phyllis Bailey; two daughters, Natalie Bailey and Angela Bailey Gatens, both of Hurricane, W.Va.; and one sister, Janice Copley of Blaine, Kentucky
Funeral services will be Sunday, May 11, 2003, at 1 p.m. Kevin Davis will officiate. Burial will be in the family cemetery at Inez.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. for family members and after 6:30 p.m. at which time friends may call.
Maxie Mullins
Maxie May Mullins, 86, of Elkhorn City, Kentucky, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at the Pikeville (Kentucky) Methodist Hospital.
Funeral services will be Sunday, May 11, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home in Elkhorn City. Burial will follow in the J.T. Willis cemetery at Haysi, Va.
Visitation will be at the funeral home.
David Roberts
Mr. David M. Roberts, 56, of 151 McCoy St., Burnwell, Kentucky, died May 17, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, W.Va.

Debert Weddington
Debert "Mike" Weddington, 86, of Lexington, Kentucky, formerly of Forest Hills, Kentucky, died Friday, May 16, 2003. He was born Jan. 2, 1917 in Hardy, Kentucky, the son of the late Samuel and Octavia Scott Weddington.
Mr. Weddington owned and operated Williamson Auto Parts in Goody, Kentucky, from 1949-1980 after closing in 1977 as a result of the '77 Flood.
He was baptized in November 1972 at the Stone Baptist Church where he remained a member until 1980 when he and his wife, Muriel, relocated to Lexington, Kentucky, to begin their retirement. Debert was a member of the Anchor Baptist Church until his death.
Mr. Weddington was a loyal and active supporter of the Masonic Lodge where he remained a member of the Stone Lodge No. 860 in Stone, Kentucky He was Initiated on Dec. 18, 1971 and Raised on March 21, 1972. He served as Lodge Master in 1978.
He is survived by his loving wife Muriel Virginia Frazier Weddington; his daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara W. Aker, widow of William R. Aker Sr. of Roanoke, Va., Linda W. Osborn and Thomas Osborn of Lexington, Kentucky, and his son and daughter-in-law, Timothy W. Weddington and Sabrina Ramey Weddington of Pikeville, Kentucky
His parents as well as his brothers Bill Weddington of Manchester, Ohio, Taft Weddington of Detroit, Mich., and his sister Tina Weddington Parish of Chillicothe, Ohio, preceded him in death.
Visitation was at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home on Harrodsburg Road with friends visiting from 6-7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 18.
Funeral services were at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home on Monday, May 19, at 12:30 p.m. with the Rev. Paul B. Sisk presiding. Cryptside services were conducted at Bluegrass Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
Pallbearers were his grandsons William R. Aker Jr., Todd F. Michaels, M. Chad Weddington and T. Matthew Weddington, his son-in-law Thomas Osborn, the husband of his granddaughter Cathy Aker McIntosh, Robert "Bobby" McIntosh and Bing Bowers, a loyal and valued friend.

Audrey Patricia Smith
Audrey Patricia Smith, 68, of Marengo, Ill. and formerly of Ransom, Kentucky, died May 17, 2003 at her residence in Marengo, Ill.
Born November 23, 1934 at Ransom, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late William T. Carter and the late Sadie Patrick Carter.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Hershell Carter.
A retired secretary, she was a faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, where for almost 30 years she taught Children's Sunday School adn was the Church Leader for the Women on Mission's Program. She did volunteer work at the Florence Nursing Home for 14 years doing hair in the beauty shop.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Smith, whom she married
on April 11, 1956.
Other survivors include a son, Steven Smith of Marengo, Ill.; a daughter, Karen (William) Palakie of Marengo, Ill.; four brothers, James (Etta) Carter of Michigan, Bill (Rita) Carter of Ohio, Gary (Sue) Carter of West Chicago, Ill. and Don (Mag) Carter of Marengo, Ill.; one sister, Pamela (Don) Moehling of Marengo, Ill, and a granddaughter, Rhiannon Krause of Marengo, Ill.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 22, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Rogers Funeral Home with Rev. Emery Varney officiating. Burial will be at Alley cemetery, Ransom, Kentucky
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Rogers Funeral Home.

Rev. Jesse Lee Perry
Rev. Jesse Lee Perry, 80, of Beauty, Kentucky died Monday, May 19, 2003 at his residence.
Born Nov. 26, 1922, in Martin County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Melvin and Bessie Horn Perry.
He was retired from Simmons Mattress. A minister for 35 years, he was a member of the Big Elk Freewill Baptist Church.
He was a veteran of WW II.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Francis Fitch Perry of Beauty, Kentucky
Other survivors include two sons, Jessie (Yvonne) Perry, Jr. of Beauty, Kentucky and Ben (Brenda) Perry of Beauty, Kentucky; five daughters, Stella Perry of Beauty, Kentucky, Lorene Johnson of Beauty, Kentucky, Carol (Jerry) Ward of Beauty, Kentucky, Deborah (Elbert) Osborne of Beauty, Kentucky and Nancy Perry of Beauty, Kentucky; a sister, Wilma (Don) Hinchman of South Point, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and one aunt, Beatrice Preston of Michigan.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 20, at 6:00 p.m. at the Big Elk Freewill Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 22, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. at the Big Elk Freewill Baptist Church with ministers Frank Hay and Clyde Waller officiating. Burial will follow at the Perry Family cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home.
Carson Goble
Carson Goble, 64, of Inez, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2003 at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Kentucky
Born Feb. 26, 1939 in Martin County, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Matt and Angeline Goble.
He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and a member of the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Goble, and one nephew, Curtis D. Goble of Grove City, Ohio.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Inez Chapel of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Ward officiating.
Burial will follow in the Howard cemetery, Debord, Kentucky
Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home is in charge.
Amanda Maynard
Amanda Dawn Maynard, born December 9, 1981, to Arthur and Teresa (Horn) Maynard, passed away June 29, 2003, at Inez, Kentucky
Surviving are brothers, Adam Maynard and Aaron Maynard, both of Inez, Kentucky Also, Amanda's grandpa Jim Jude resides at Wolf Creek, Kentucky
Preceding her in death were her grandmothers. Sadie (Maynard) Jude, Irene Stepp Horn Jenkins and grandfather Virgil Horn.
Amanda leaves behind a beautiful 2-year-old daughter, Trinity Jade Wiley.
Visitation will be at the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home on Monday, June 30, 2003, at 6 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the Inez Freewill Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at 1 p.m. Ministers Kevin Davis and Tim Preece will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Horn cemetery at Inez, Kentucky
