Sarah Chapman
Sarah E. Chapman, 91, of Chesterfield Township, Mich., formerly of Sharondale, Kentucky, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 at Presbyterian Village East, Chesterfield Township, Mich.
Born Oct. 20, 1910 in Dassel, Minn., she was a daughter of the late W.F. Compton and Laverne Chatman.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Chapman, who passed away Sept. 5, 1970. The Chapmans were married
on Sept. 3, 1925 in Pikeville, Kentucky
She was also preceded in death by four children, Margaret Fredericks, Estal, Quilus and Lillian; one brother, Malcolm May; and one sister, Opal Reed.
Mrs. Chapman was a homemaker and member of the Sharondale Church of Christ.
Survivors include sons Jack Chapman of Gilbert, Ariz., Floyd Chapman Jr. of Sterling Heights, Mich., and George Chapman of Detroit, Mich.; daughters Bessie Chapman of Little Rock, Ark., Helen Guzdziol of New Baltimore, Mich., Deberonca Kaercher and Minerva O'Malley, both of Warren, Mich., Rose Hooton of Henderson, Nev., and Shirl Comstock of Chicago Heights, Ill.; a brother, Charles May of Albion, Mich.; sisters Carrie Maynard of Albion, Mich., Ruby Ferrell of Canada, Kentucky, and Mildred Burke of Jenkins, Kentucky; 39 grandchildren; 102 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandsons.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002 at Sharondale Church of Christ with Bob Werntz officiating.
Burial will follow in the Chapman cemetery, Canada, Kentucky
Pallbearers will be Cass Guzdziol III, David O'Malley, Steven Williams, Donald Rogers, George Chapman Jr. and Brian Bucec.
Honor guards will be Shirl Comstock, Minerva O'Malley and Rosemary Hooton.
Visitation will be from 6-10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Rogers Funeral Home with special prayer services being held both nights beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Scott Williams, 80, of Belfry, Kentucky, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002 at the South Williamson (Kentucky) Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Woodrow New
Woodrow New, 81, of North Matewan, W.V., formerly of Majestic, Kentucky, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002 at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Kentucky
Born Nov. 14, 1920, he was a son of the late Willie New and Polly Prater New.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ivory Maynard New; a son, Glenn New; brothers John and William New; and a sister, Lena Hardin.
A retired coal miner, Mr. New was a member of the Church of Christ faith. He was a disabled veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Eloise New; a son, Woodrow (Billie Jean) New of Majestic, Kentucky; daughters, Earnestine (Wayne) Gentry of Cooksville, Tenn., Shirley (Dan) Clark, Claris (Don) Wilson and Betty (Dan) Buschur, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; stepchildren, Bradley (Debbie) Casey of Kimper, Kentucky, Willie (Margaret) Casey of Elkhorn City, Kentucky, Phyllis J. (Oliver) Harris of N. Matewan, Patricia Ann (Jessie) Dotson of Phelps, Kentucky, Danny Ray Casey of McCarr, Kentucky, and Randal (Penny) Casey of Freeburn, Kentucky; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at Chambers Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow in the New Family cemetery at Chapman Fork, Majestic, Kentucky
DAV Chapter 141 will conduct military services at the gravesite.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home.

Yvonne Skiba
Yvonne "Cotton" F. Skiba, 67, of Sterling Heights, Mich., died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002 at the Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oaks, Mich.
Born Dec. 6, 1934 in Phelps, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Sally Francis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Mike and Donald; and a sister, Joyce.
She was a disabled veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Yvonne retired as administrative supervisor for IBA State College of Beauty.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Skiba of Sterling Heights, Mich.; the following children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Rhonda, Will (Lisa) and Austin Grifka, Ron (Tracy), Nicole, Rebecca and Carl Skiba, Carolyn (Bill) Garrett and Gabriel Logiudice, Mitch, Lenny, Brian, Jenny, Justin, Vicy Ann, Ivy, Joseph, Muncy, Mike, Joey, Bobby and Jordan; brothers Carl "Bo" (Ruby) Francis of Morristown, Tenn., Greg (Kay) Francis and Teddy (Paulette) Flag of Phelps, Kentucky; sisters Geraldine Davenport of Huntsville, Ala., Emogene (Bob) Justice of Kimper, Kentucky, Carol Ann (Jim) Dotson of Phelps, Kentucky
She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, loved ones and friends who held her close and will sadly miss her.
Funeral services were held Sept. 25, 2002 in Utica, Mich. A memorial service will be held at a future date to allow friends and family in the Phelps area to pay their respects.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Christian Church or the Peter Creek Presbyterian Church, both located in Phelps, Kentucky

Josephine Hurley
Josephine Hurley, 73, of Freeburn, Kentucky, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002 at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Kentucky
Born June 24, 1929 in Argo, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Landon and Betty Nealy Blankenship.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Taft Hurley; four brothers; and one sister.
She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include daughters Geneva Kobielusz of Wyoming, Della May McAvoys of Oregon, Dorothy LaRocque of Jefferson, Ga., Mary Mounts of Morganton, N.C., Arlene Justice, Bonnie Justice and Helen Fields, all of Freeburn, Kentucky; sons William F. Hurley of Freeburn, Kentucky, Landon Hurley of Stopover, Kentucky, and Randy Hurley of Jefferson, Ga.; sisters Imogene Wolford of Phelps, Kentucky, and Patrisha Fields of Ohio; and special friends Irene and Mike Stell.
Services will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 at the Freeburn Free Pentecostal Church of God at 1 p.m. with the Revs. Kenny Chapman, Ermel Fields, Eugene Gross and DeWitt Furrow officiating.
Burial will follow in the Dotson cemetery at Phelps, Kentucky
Grandsons and other family members will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will begin Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002 at the church at 6 p.m. with services nightly beginning at 7 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Services.
J.B. Trout Sr.
J.B. (Jonah) Trout Sr., 85, of Canada, Kentucky, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002 at Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Pikeville, Kentucky
Born May 15, 1917 in Stone, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Alvis and Lydia (Blackburn) Trout.
A retired coal miner with Eastern Coal Corp., he was a member of the UMWA, International Executive Board member for District 30 and past president of Local Union 5737 UMWA.
He was a member of the Sharondale Church of Christ and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Lula Mae Rogers Trout; three sons, J.B. Trout Jr. and Eddie Trout, both of Las Vegas, Nev., and Ricki Trout of Canada, Kentucky; a brother, Buddy Trout of Ypsilanti, Mich.; five sisters, Marie Scott of Portsmouth, Va., Gyp Jakowczyk of Flint, Mich., Nina Trout of Ypsilanti, Mich., Sarah Varney of Westland, Mich., and Rita Varney of Tecumseh, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Kelly Connell, Michelle Collins, J.B. Trout II, Jason Trout, Cory Trout, Nickalos Trout and Caitlyn Trout; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002 at Rogers Funeral Home with Bob Werntz officiating.
Burial will follow in Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Kentucky

Grayson Hinkle
Grayson "Dick" Hinkle, 85, of Hardy, Kentucky, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002 at Logan General Hospital.
Born July 22, 1917 at Big Creek, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Rev. George Hinkle and Thursey Jane Smith Hinkle.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Johnson Hinkle; brothers Cecil, Ranson, Ester Marvin, Fred and George Hinkle Jr.; sisters Lola Hinkle (Bailey) Hager, Ressie, Bertha and Gracie Hinkle; son and wife Raymond and Etta Hinkle; and daughter Joyce Ann Hinkle.
Dick was retired from Norfolk & Western and was a coal miner and carpenter.
Survivors include five grandchildren, Craig (Camey) Varney of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, Brian Hinkle, USAF, Belleville, Ill., Allen Hinkle of Lexington, Kentucky, Tina Cline of Newport News, Va., Tona Quesenberry of Princeton; one brother, James Frelin (Margaret) Hinkle of Gordon, Ga.; four sisters-in-law, Betty Hinkle of Hatfield, Kentucky, Ruth Hinkle of Belfry, Kentucky, Arlene Johnson Stepp and Mageline Scott of Hardy, Kentucky; and one brother-in-law, Eugene Johnson of Wyandotte, Mich.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 at Rogers Funeral Home with Buddy Kendrick officiating.
Burial will follow in the Julius Scott cemetery, Hardy, Kentucky

Buster Maynard
Buster Maynard, 86, of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, formerly of Naugatuck, passed away Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 in the Williamson Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 9, 1916 at Delbarton, he was a son of the late Mollie Evans White and Lewis Maynard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by stepfather Lewis White, brother Bill Maynard and a son, Gary D. Maynard.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 49 of Williamson. He was a veteran of World War II and was employed by the Mingo County EOC for many years until his retirement.
Survivors include a life-long companion, Avanell Maynard; sons Clarence (Mae) Maynard of Parsley Bottom, Jerry (Judy) Maynard of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, and Larry (Kathy) Maynard of Blackberry, Kentucky; daughters, Deloris (Ronald) Gregory of Portsmouth, Ohio, Jessie (Frank) Duty of Taylorsville, Della (Curtis) Collins of Maher and Barbara Sue Chafins of Turkey Creek, Kentucky; and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Church of the Living God at Laurel Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Damon Murphy and Joe McCoy officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher, with the DAV Chapter 141, Belfry, Kentucky, performing graveside rites.
Visitation will be at the church Monday after 5 p.m. with special services at 7 p.m.
Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Eugene Hurley
Eugene Hurley, 87, of Huddy, Kentucky, passed away Monday, September 30, 2002 at his home in Jerry Bottom.
He was born May 26, 1915, at Nigh, Kentucky, the firstborn of fourteen children of the late Emory and Zinna Justice Hurley. At the age of seven, he came to Pond Creek taking turns with his brother, Plennie, walking and riding horseback.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Ball Hurley; an infant daughter, Charlene; sister, Erie Anderson; four brothers, Plennie, Parkey, Ilas and Oliver "Jack" Hurley; two sons-in-law, Huey Riddle and Brady Morris.
He was a Pond Creek merchant and managed Justice Drive Inn at Goody for many years. He retired from Eastern Coal Corporation.
Eugene was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in the Pacific on the U.S.S. Monterey during World War II. Eugene was a longtime member of the Belfry Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Phillip (Ruby) Hurley of Kissimmee, Fla.; three daughters, Betty Riddle of St. Clair Shores, Mich., Phyllis (Martin) Frey of Tulsa, Okla., Margarette (Claude) Smith of Huddy, Kentucky; four brothers, Harold (Louella) Hurley of Louisville, Kentucky, Carroll Hurley of West Columbia, S.C., James (Phyllis) Hurley of LaGrange, Kentucky, and George (Sharon) Hurley of Maysville, Ga.; five sisters, Nora Varney of Romeo, Mich., Gertrude Lamar of Warren, Mich., Ernestine (Oren) Fields of Miami, Fla., Arbutus (Edward) Hoyle of Marshall, N.C., Peggy (Jenis) Ingle of Pelion, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Lanoka (Tom) Sak of Farmington Hills, Mich., Karen (Rob) Rogensues of Eastpointe, Mich., David Frey of New York City, Phillip Eugene (Malinda) Hurley of Ypsilanti, Mich., Kennith (Lison) Hurley of Trinity, N.C., Mark (Jackie) Curry of Randleman, N.C., Rhonda (Kevin) Coy of Newport, Kentucky, and Gregory (Tricia) Morris of Wilder, Kentucky; seven great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly, and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 3, 2002 at the Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Kentucky, with Rev. Buddy Kendrick officiating.
Entombment will follow in Mt. View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Kentucky Graveside rites will be performed by the Belfry Chapter 141 DAV.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Phillip Eugene Hurley, Kennith Hurley, Gregory Morris, David Frey, Mark Curry and grandsons-in-law Tom Sak, Kevin McCoy and Rob Rogensues.
Visitation began 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 2002 and will continue on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 with special services at 7 p.m.

Opal Drew
Opal Thomas Drew, 58, of Forest Hills, Kentucky, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002 at her residence.
Born Aug. 14, 1944 in Lake County, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Fred Thomas and Myrtle Merrit Thomas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother.
Opal was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Tony Abercrombie of Georgia; one daughter, Anita Booten of Sidney, Kentucky; two brothers, Josh Thomas and Freddie Thomas, both of Florida; three sisters, Lucille Odom, Rhoda Johnson and Blanche Powell, all of Florida; and three grandchildren, Tyler Booten, Summer Booten and Savanna Booten.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 at Rogers Funeral Home with minister Carl Hess officiating.
Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
