Lela Preston
Lela Mary Coomer Preston, 88, of Danville died Saturday at Baptist Homes Inc., in Danville.
She was born
August 21, 1917, in Danville, Kentucky daughter of the late James and Bertha Colyer Boomer. She was the widow of Hubert D. Preston and a member of First Church of God, Harrodsburg Rd.. She was a private child caregiver for many years.
Survivors include two sons, Donald G. Preston of Tampa, Florida, and Bobby Preston of Eubank, Kentucky; 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 11 am. Monday with Rev. J. R. Johnson officiating.
Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stith Funeral Home, 318 W. Broadway, Danville.
Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery.
The family requests donations be sent to Heritage Hospice.
Robert Turner
Robert Turner, 73, Somerset, died Saturday, April 22, 2006 at Britthaven Nursing Home.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25 at Pulaski Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m.

James Morgan
Retired coal miner
Somerset — James Morgan, 82, Main Street, Hyden, Kentucky, died Monday, May 8, 2006, at Manchester Memorial Hospital in Manchester.
He was born
Jan. 1, 1924.
He had served in the military, was a retired coal miner and former U.S. Steel employee. He was also a member of Hyden Baptist Church, where he served as deacon.
He married Mildred Roberts Morgan, who preceded him in death.
Survivors include his two daughters, Linda Hue Morgan, Frankfort, Kentucky, and Elizabeth “Liz” Morgan, Hyden; four sons, Frankie Morgan, Hyden, Kentucky, Bige Morgan, Bellbrook, Ohio, and Larry and John Curtis Morgan, both of Hyden; three sisters; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be noon, Thursday, May 11, at Hyden Baptist Church in Hyden, Kentucky, with the Rev. Roger Wolfe officiating. military services will be conducted by Leslie County Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 133 of Hyden.
Burial will be Thursday, at West Science Hill Cemetery, Science Hill.

Londis Whitaker
Londis “Pete” Whitaker, 82, son of the late George Louis and Effie Mae Whitson Whitaker, died Friday, April 21, 2006.
He was born
June 1, 1923 in Stab, Kentucky He was united in marriage to Juanita Sears Whitaker, who preceded him in death. He was a member of the East Somerset Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion Post #38 Honor Guard. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a truck driver before retirement.
Survivors include one niece, Jennifer (and Danny) Henson, Louisville; two brothers, Glen (and Opal) Whitaker, Somerset, Kentucky, and Herman Daniel Whitaker, Indianapolis, Ind; one sister, Bertha Sears, Somerset,, Kentucky, and a host of other relatives, friends and church family.
Other than his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, James “J.L.” Whitaker; three sisters, Carley Eyster, Betty Lou Freeland and Violet Rose Randolph.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, at the chapel of Pulaski Funeral Home, with Rev. Darvie Fenison officiating.
Burial will be at Lakeside Memorial Garden following the Funeral services with military Honors to be conducted by the American Legion Post #38.

Homemaker
Somerset — Mary Slone, 79, of the Saint Marys Living Center in Saint Marys, Ohio, died Sunday, May 7, 2006, her residence.
She was born
Feb. 6, 1927, in Hollybush, Kentucky, daughter of the late Sylvester and Clarinda Jacobs Triplett. She was a homemaker, enjoyed sewing, making quilts and gardening. She was a great cook and belonged to Old Regular Baptist Church.
She married Edward Slone and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Jeff Slone of Somerset; sisters, Mazie Slone of Hollybush, Joy Donovan of Saint Marys, and Jane Lewis of Coldwater; brothers, Irvin Triplett of Hollybush, Jerry (and Mary) Triplett of Saint Marys, Sid (and Jean) Triplett of Somerset, and Oliver Triplett and Steve (and Glory) Triplett, both of Saint Marys; a great friend, Delie Thornsberry; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a daughter, Anna Faye Hall; two sisters, Gracie Jacobs and Corsbia Thornsberry; and a brother, Amos Triplett.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home.
Burial will be in military Springs Cemetery in Jabez, Kentucky

John Smith Sr.
Former Norfolk Southern Railroad Superintendent
Somerset — John Richard Smith Sr., 79, Sioux Trail, Somerset, died Monday, May 8, 2006, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
A native of Appalachia, Va., he was born
Jan. 24, 1927, son of the late Robert Clarence and Mary Lettitia Mullins Smith Sr. He was a U.S. Navy Seaman First Class and was awarded two Bronze Stars during the capture and occupation of Southern Palau Island and the capture and occupation of Guam.
He was Superintendent of Safety with Norfolk Southern Railroad and was inducted into the Norfolk Southern Railroad Prestigious Thoroughbred Club in September 1987, and received various safety awards from Norfolk Southern.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as staff parish chairman and Sunday school teacher. He was Who’s Who in Finance and Industry and Who’s Who for the Business Men of the South; received the Jaycee Presidential Award of Honor; was named a Kentucky Colonel; and served in various community leadership roles.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane Humbert Smith, whom he married March 26, 1947, in Jellico, Tenn.; a son, J.R. (and Billie Jean) Smith, Somerset; two daughters, Janie Smith (and Mark) Porter, Morehead, Kentucky, and Margaret Smith (and John) Kibler, Bluefield, W.Va.; a brother, Harry Smith of Lebanon, Kentucky; a daughter-in-law, Cookie Smith; seven grandchildren, Todd Kibler, Jerimah (and Keisha) Kibler, Lucinda (and Chris) Copley, Christopher Thomas Wardlow, Will Knight, Natalie (and Michael) Benedict and Jared Michael Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Natasha and William Benedict, Dayenena, Asher Winter Knight.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert C. Smith Jr., and Charles Ray Smith; a sister, Lula Mae “Tootsie” Tritt.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 11, at the chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company with the Rev. Doug Willcoxson officiating.
Burial will be in Mill Springs Cemetery.

Marie Adams
Somerset — Marie Holt Maden Adams, 94, a resident of Britthaven Nursing Home in Somerset, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset.
She was born
May 18, 1911 in Pulaski County to the late William (Bill) and Vie Burton Holt. She was a member of McKinney Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Pulaski County.
Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Juanita Young, Somerset; two grandsons, Terry (and Mae) Young, Las Vegas, Nev., and Larry Young, Somerset; three granddaughters, Anita (and Larry) Flynn, Nancy, Darlene (and Chuck) Goff, Somerset, and Sue (and Larry) Toering, Somerset; and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jerry Otis Young; one sister, Anna Young; two husbands, Henry Maden and Floyd Adams.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Somerset Cemetery with Bro. Howard Burton officiating.
Visitation will be held prior to the graveside service from noon until 2 p.m. today at Lange & New Bros. Family Funeral Home.
Musical selections at the graveside service will include “Amazing Grace” by volcalist and guitarist Stephen Denney and a taped selection of “How Great Thou Art.”
Pallbearers will be Chuck Goff, Larry Toering, Johnny Goff, Dustin Goff, James Smith and Stephen Denney.

Ethel Caucci
Somerset — Ethel “Tommie” Caucci, 84, Clements Avenue, Somerset, died Sunday, May 7, 2006, at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington.
She was born
Feb. 15, 1922 in Whitesburg, Kentucky, a daughter of the late William H. and Mae Blair. She was a graduate of American University, Washington, D.C., and was a Sergeant (WAC) in the U.S. Army Air Corps. She was a retired U.S. Government employee, and a retired teacher in the Head Start Program. She belonged to the Young at Hearts group at First Baptist Church, where she was a member.
She is survived by a son, George (and Bernadette) Caucci, Newton, Penn., and a sister, Joy Shelund, Richmond, Kentucky
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bill Blair and Francis Clifton “Hawk” Blair; and three sisters, Virginia Muscato, Patricia Keast, and Ann Brown.
A Funeral service will be held Friday, May 12, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Haynes and Bill Adcock officiating.
Burial will be in the Mill Springs Cemetery.

Maggie Ellen Poynter Burnett, 82, of the Stab community, died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at Britthaven of Somerset.
She was born
in the Bent community May 2, 1924, daughter of the late George Allen and Rilda Ellen Burkhart Phelps. She was a homemaker and member of Bethel Baptist Church, Somerset. She loved quilting and gardening, and loved her deer and birds.
Survivors include three sons, Dale Poynter and Rick (and Velma) Poynter, both of Linton, Ind., and Gary (and Helen) Poynter, Eubank; a daughter, Carolyn (and Londis) Carlton, of the Stab community; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lonzo Poynter; her second husband, Clarence Burnett; her parents; a son, James Walter Poynter; a daughter, Patricia Marie Poynter; three brothers, Charles, James and Robert Phelps; six sisters, Bea Harper, Mae Hargis, Lottie Smiley, Elsie Bray, Lora Phelps and Flora Alexander; a grandchild, Drum Nelson Poynter; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today (Friday, May 12), at the chapel of Morris and Hislope Funeral Home, Science Hill, with Bro. Don Branscum officiating.
Burial will be in Woodstock Cemetery, Somerset.

Gertie Jones
Somerset — Gertie Mae Jones, 94, Somerset, formerly of Albany, Kentucky, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, in Somerset.
The widow of Ewell Jones, she was a member of Cumberland City United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Passarelli, Gary, Ind., and JoAnn Boyd, Somerset; six sons, Clarence Jones, New Castle, Ind., Eugene Jones, Somerset, Ray Jones, Maroa, Ill., Clayton Jones, Lawrence, Ind., Ronald Jones, Evansville, Ind., and Donnie Jones, Decatur, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and two nieces.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the chapel of Talbott Funeral Home, 1106 North Cross St., Albany, Kentucky, with Bro. Ted Burchett officiating.
Burial will be in Cumberland City Cemetery.

Mary Boss
Mary Ann Boss, 85, Boss Lane, Bronston, Kentucky, passed away at her residence on Saturday, May 13, 2006.
Mary Ann was born
in Louisville, Kentucky, on Sept. 27, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Walter and JoEtta Bell. She married Edward F. Boss on Dec. 26, 1941, in Louisville, Kentucky
Survivors include her husband, Edward and three sons: Edward W. (and Mary Lou) Boss of Winchester, Gary W. (and Mary Vaughan) Boss of Bronston and Bruce W. (and Virginia) Boss of Indianapolis; Ind.; four granddaughters, Heather (and Brian) Roach of Cummins, Ga., Allison (and John) Fraley of Somerset, Jenni (and Terry) York of Nicholasville and Tabby (and Eddie) Geers of Richmond. Surviving great grandchildren are Kayla and Tyler Roach, Foster Fraley, Verity and Brittney Chandler, Bethany, Benjamin and Brandi Geers as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Boss was a founding member of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Somerset in December, 1956 and served as Church Treasurer for many years. She was also a past President of the Somerset Woman’s Club in 1956-57.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 206 W. Columbia Street, on Monday, May 15, 2006, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bruce Boss and the Rev. Dana Hardwick officiating.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church of Memorial Fund or Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
