Falmouth's Lena Whalen, helped deliver 56 babies

Lena Whalen helped bring a lot of babies into this world.

In fact, if a woman was giving birth, or a child was hurt in Falmouth in the 1930s, '40s and '50s, Mrs. Whalen was there.

Her grandmother, Sallie Ann McClanahan, was a midwife and delivered 500 to 600 babies in the area, and it was almost as if helping deliver children was in his mother's blood, Whalen said.

The neighbors also depended on Mrs. Whalen when children got hurt or sick.
