Shirley Jensen, 'Sunshine Ambassador'

Shirley J. Jensen liked to help people, whether it was seeing that seniors were getting hot meals or giving directions to lost truck drivers.

"She was known as the 'Sunshine Ambassador' with the Ludlow Ladies Civic Club," recalled Mrs. Jensen's son, Dennis Jensen of Covington.

Mrs. Jensen, 74, of Covington, died Friday evening at her home.

She was a retired clerk with Dick's Liquor Store, Covington, retiring in 1994 after working there about 13 years, her son said.

As a retiree, Mrs. Jensen volunteered at Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky. "She made outreach visits, visiting people in their homes, but mostly she was a phone handler, helping people find things they needed, such as air conditioning and meals brought to their homes," Jensen said.

A former resident of Ludlow, Mrs. Jensen was a member of First Baptist Church, Ludlow, and a member of Ludlow Senior Citizens and the former Ludlow Ladies Civic Club. Her position with the civic club, her son said, included sending sympathy and get well cards to families and helping with the weekly bingo.

His mother was also a citizens band radio (CB) enthusiast, who went by the handle "Tom Boy," Jensen said. "She would drive around and help truckers who were lost. I remember one time she headed off a driver who was going south on Scott Street and didn't know about the underpass," he recollected.

His mother was orphaned at age six and had to work hard all of her life, he said. "She had to scrap and fight to keep going. Her favorite saying was, 'the squeaky wheel gets the grease,' " he remembered.

Other survivors also include a son, Wes Jensen of West Chester, Ohio; stepsons, Frank Kratzmeier of Covington and Ben Bowerman of Newport; daughters, Juanita Moon of Phoenix and Betty Dizmang of Ogala, Neb.; a brother, Raymond Perry of Bromley; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
