Southgate's James F. Bertsch, honors student, athlete
The accomplishments of James Francis Bertsch's young life were numerous, exceeded only by his great promise.
Salutatorian of his graduating class at Newport High School, athlete and college honor student, Mr. Bertsch died Friday night at Cincinnati's University Hospital of injuries suffered in a farm tractor accident earlier in the day in Pendleton County.
Mr. Bertsch, 19, lived in Southgate and was a sophomore at Thomas More College.
Second in his high school graduating class in 1996, he was on a full scholar ship at Thomas More, where he was majoring in mathematics and physics. He earned nearly perfect grades last semester, said a brother, Ron Bertsch of Taylor Mill.
Another brother, Ken Bertsch of Bellevue, who owns the farm not far from Williamstown Lake where the accident occurred, said Mr. Bertsch was working alone and moving bales of freshly cut hay to another location.
Somehow, Mr. Bertsch fell from the tractor and the vehicle ran over him, Ken Bertsch said.
Mr. Bertsch crawled to an area where a neighbor heard his shouts for help. He was rushed to the hospital by air ambulance, but died at 8:40 p.m., about five hours after the accident.
"He was everything to us," Ken Bertsch said.
Along with earning outstanding grades at Newport High, Mr. Bertsch also played football and baseball for the Wildcats. He was a member of the St. Catherine Church team in the Catholic Holy Name Baseball League, and was to play a game on Sunday.
Mr. Bertsch served as an umpire for Knothole Baseball in Campbell County and was a soccer official with Calvary Christian School, Covington.
He also loved golf and had intended to play Friday. Instead, he decided to pitch in with farm work, his brothers said.
Mr. Bertsch was a member of St. Therese Church, Southgate.
"He loved the Lord so much, and loved his family and friends," said Ron Bertsch.
Other survivors include his parents, Ronald L. and Janet Weyer Bertsch of Southgate; a brother, Andy Bertsch of Southgate; and sisters, Cheryl Spahr of Erlanger and Katie Bertsch of Southgate.
