STELLA E. WILLIAMS
ULYSSES -- Stella Eleveta Williams, 86, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Family Health West in Fruita, Colo.
She was born Aug. 5, 1916, to George W. and Nora F. (Lassiter) Hawkins in Tyrone, Okla.
She married J.D. Norwood in 1934. He died March 5, 1953.
She married Irving Williams Nov. 21, 1957, in Clayton, N.M. He died April 8, 1994.
She moved to Elkhart with her family and graduated from Elkhart High School.
She was a homemaker and a former resident of Guymon, Okla.; San Diego; Modesto, Calif.; Ulysses, and Grand Junction, Colo.
She was a former member of Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include one son, George F. "Bud" Norwood, Grand Junction, Colo.; two grandchildren, George Norwood Jr. and David Norwood; and five great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Kessler and Velma Copper.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mennonite Brethren Church in Ulysses with the Pastor Nathan Gift presiding.
Entombment will follow at the Liberal Cemetery
Mausoleum in Liberal.

JACK M. WILSON
OVERLAND PARK -- Rev. Jack Millard Wilson, 64, former Liberal resident, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, in Overland Park.
He was born Jan. 24, 1938, to the Rev. J. Harmon and Janelle Wilson, in Beggs, Okla.
He married Elizabeth Leppke Feb. 20, 1960, in Catoosa, Okla. She survives.
He grew up in Oklahoma where his dad was a pastor at several Assembly of God churches.
He graduated from high school in Webbers Falls, Okla. He graduated from Southwestern Assembly of God University in 1986, after completing his work as a continuing education student. He was a pastor at Beloit when he completed his bachelor in career arts degree.
He started preaching when he was 16 years old, doing evangelistic work. Three months after his marriage, he and his wife started a pastoral ministry. He was ordained with the Assembly of God in 1962 and was a pastor at churches in Quapaw, Okla.; Vinita, Okla.; Catoosa, Okla.; Topeka, Winfield, Beloit and Liberal.
He served in several leadership positions in the Assembly of God church, including sectional youth leader in Oklahoma for six years, Kansas District Royal Rangers commander for three and a half years, chairman of the Kansas District Credentialing Committee for 13 years, and Section 5 presbyter for six years. He authored a book on ministerial ethics, "But Thou O Man of God."
Other survivors include one son, Rev. Jeff Wilson and wife, Judy, Goddard; one daughter, Teresa Drake and husband, Gy, Lenexa; seven grandchildren, Janell, Andrea and Bradley Wilson, and Sam, Micah and Gillian Drake, and Stephanie Bever and husband, Luke, Mountain Home, Idaho; two great-grandchildren, Nickolas and Natalie Bever; one sister-in-law, Sadie Wilson; one niece, Laurie Ray; and two grandnieces, Jessica and Sarah Ray.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, John Wayne Wilson.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Life Center in Wichita.
Burial will be at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Old Mission Mortuary in Wichita.

EARNEST PAYNE JR.
Earnest "Mr. E." Payne Jr., 74, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born Feb. 15, 1928, to Earnest and Emma (Britt) Payne in Ben Franklin, Texas.
He married Patricia Roland and later married Dolly Durham.
He was baptized at Church of Christ in Liberal.
He worked as a shoe shiner at the Warren Hotel for many years and retired from the National Helium Plant as a custodian.
Survivors include four sons, Charles Levi, Amarillo, Texas, Troy Grimes, Tennessee Colony, Texas, Tony Rowe, Dallas, Texas, and Chris Baker, Los Angeles; four daughters, Phyllis Levi, El Paso, Texas, Charlotte Wilson, Wichita, Lechia Baker, St. Louis, Mo., and Adrian Payne, Northridge, Calif.; one brother, George Payne, Liberal; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bibleway Church of God in Christ in Liberal with the Rev. Melvin Tatum presiding.
Burial will be at Liberal Cemetery
in Liberal.

ROSE M. KELLS
SATANTA -- Rose "Marie" Kells, 76, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at The Shepard's Center in Cimarron.
She was born Nov. 23, 1925, to Samuel D. and Ruth Amelia (Lindeman) Snavely in Garden City.
She married Russell T. Kells Aug. 18, 1945, in Garden City. He survives.
She was a lifetime resident of Haskell County.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Bible Christian Church in Garden City and a past member of the Valley Grange, rural Satanta.
Other survivors include two sons, Donald D. Kells and wife, Linda, and Darcy Kells and wife, Pam, all of rural Satanta; two daughters, Karolyn J. Kells, Hays, and Kristi R. Cole and husband, Jim, rural Satanta; three sisters, Nita Draper, Salt Lake City, Louise Grabast, Arlington, Texas, and Ruby Rutledge and husband, Verne, Sublette; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Lewis Snavely.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bible Christian Church in Garden City with the Ministers Jeff Starkey and David Johnson presiding.
Burial will be at Haskell County Cemetery
in Sublette.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Bible Christian Church.

ROY D. BECKETT
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Roy D. Beckett, 66, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2002.
He was born March 21, 1936, to Roy J. and Glenna Beckett in Greensburg.
He married Delores Lessy July 5, 1969, in Agate, Colo. She survives.
He was in the banking business and started his career at First National Bank in Limon and worked there for 17 years. He and his wife moved to Imperial, Neb., in 1972, where he took a position with the Chase County Bank and Trust Company as an installment loan officer. He was promoted to senior vice-president and trust officer and head of the commercial loan department.
In 1980, he and his wife moved to Colorado where he did some gold mining in Breckenridge. He opened a landscape and fencing company in 1981 in Bennett, Colo. In 1983, he and his wife became real estate agents and worked together. He and his wife moved to Phoenix in 1998.
His hobbies included fishing, traveling around the country, horses, reading, cooking and spending time with his family and three cats.
Other survivors include his mother, Hugoton; three daughters, Jackie Eliason and husband, Eric, Flagstaff, Ariz., Jerri Lee, Page, Ariz., and Janine, Round Rock, Texas; one grandson, Marcus Eliason; four brothers, Jim and wife, Toni, Lamar, Colo., Larry, Wiley, Colo., Phil and wife, Carolyn Avondale, Colo., and Mike and wife, Karen, Hugoton; two sisters, Linda Steele and husband, Marvin, Estes Park, Colo., and Carole Monks and husband, Jerry, Limon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the West Valley Chapel in Peoria.

J.L. BRUCE JR.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- J.L. Bruce Jr., 86, formerly of Liberal, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, in Colorado Springs.
He was born April 23, 1916, to J.L. and Besse M. (Christy) Bruce in Buffalo.
He married Betty L. Triplett. She preceded him in death.
He married Kay Brubaker. She survives.
He graduated from Lyons High School in Lyons.
He lived in Elkhart before moving to Liberal in 1957. In 1957, he started Bruce Drilling, which later became Bruce Well Service. He sold the business in 1981 and retired.
He had been a resident of Colorado since 1984.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1947 in Liberal.
Other survivors include one son, Tony Bruce, Liberal; one step-son, Terry Brubaker, Colorado Springs; one sister, Barbara Harper, McKinney, Texas; two grandchildren, Tony Jr. and Tara Bruce; and three step-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Liberal Cemetery
with the Rev. Rex Petty presiding.

L.K. LANDIS
Dr. Larry Kent Landis, 54, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born Sept. 13, 1948, to Truman and Mary Louise (Herrin) Landis in Amarillo, Texas.
He married Sandy Bolton June 7, 1969, in Oklahoma City. She survives.
He was a resident of Liberal for 27 years.
He was an ordained minister, having served in the Xenia Baptist Church in Xenia and Bible Baptist Church in Neodesha, and had served in the Fellowship Baptist Church in Liberal since May 1975.
His hobbies included collecting antique cars.
Other survivors include his mother, Amarillo; one son, Jerry Kent Landis, Bentonville, Ark.; one daughter, Lorraine Kathlyn Landis, Liberal; one brother, Don Landis, Longview, Texas; three sisters, Betty Cummings, Dallas, Texas, Linda Flowers, Amarillo, and Denise Clapp, Morrisville, Penn.; and seven grandchildren, Tucker Kent Landis, Taylor Landis, Tanner Landis, Bailey Landis, T.J. Prater, Tyler Prater and Tiffany Prater.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fellowship Baptist Church in Liberal with the Revs. Bill Prater and Bill Miller presiding.
Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery
in Liberal.
Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal. Family will be present to greet friends from 6:30 -8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
