THELMA F. DESELMS
ULYSSES -- Thelma F. Deselms, 90, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born April 27, 1912, to Joseph and Elizabeth Wood in Seward County.
She married Ralph Deselms Feb. 1, 1959, in Ulysses. He survives.
She lived most of her life in Southwest Kansas. She lived in Ulysses since the early 1940s.
She was a postal clerk and rural mail carrier for 29 and one half years.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Ulysses; E.H.U.; Grant County Senior Citizens Center; and former member of Hospital Auxiliary.
Her hobbies included gardening, yard work, traveling and spending time with her family.
Other survivors include one son, Marvin Shelite and wife, Connie, Hugoton; one step-son, Tommy Deselms and wife, Grace, Littleton, Colo.; one brother, Woodrow Wood, Alva, Okla.; two sisters, Hazel Flowers, Macon, Mo., and Bea Fiene, Newton; 12 grandchildren; one step-grandson; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Elvin Lee Shelite; three daughters, Loretta Herman, Lenora Howard and Joanna Alexander; three brothers, Glen Wood, John Wood and Charles Wood; and one granddaughter, Penny Howard.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Ulysses with the Rev. Dennis Livingston presiding.
Burial will be at Ulysses Cemetery.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses.

CAROL L. DOWNING
MOSCOW -- Carol L. Downing, 70, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.
She was born Aug. 27, 1932, to Alan Berryman and Geraldine Mildred (Herbert) Davey in Milwaukee, Wis.
She married Coleman E. "Pudge" Downing July 28, 1956, in Milwaukee. He died June 1, 1997.
She was a resident of Moscow since 1956, having moved from Milwaukee.
She graduated from St. Mary's College in Wauwatosa, Wis.
She taught fourth grade and chapter one for 34 years in the Moscow School District. She retired in 1997.
She was a USO hostess during the Korean Conflict.
She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church, Hugoton, Kansas National Education Association and Moscow Federated Club. She was a former Boy Scout leader and merit badge counselor.
Her hobbies included woodworking, stained glass, making doll houses and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her mother, Moscow; three sons, Alan Downing and wife, Diane, and Scott Downing and wife, Lonna, all of Moscow, and Gregg Downing and wife, Lori, Guymon, Okla.; and seven grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her father and one brother, Ronald Davey.
Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Helen Catholic Church in Hugoton.
Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Helen Catholic Church with the Father Michael McAndrew presiding.
Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal, and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at St. Helen Catholic Church in Hugoton.

CARROLL V. BARNES
ULYSSES -- Carroll "Bood" Vincent Barnes, 90, died.
He was born Dec. 5, 1911, to Ross and Mabel Leirer Barnes.
He married Margaret. She survives.
He served as a gunner's mate aboard several merchant ships during World War II. He served the United States Navy for three and a half years during the war.
He was a farmer.
He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints, where he was an Elder. He served in church leadership positions on several occasions.
Other survivors include four sons, Larry Barnes, Selah, Wash., Jerry Barnes, Highland, Calif., David Barnes, Woodward, Okla., and Douglas Barnes, Bridgeport, Texas; one daughter, Sharon Wood, Saratoga Springs, Utah; one brother, Oscar Barnes, Ulysses; 30 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Ulysses with the church elders Albert Wood and Eric Follis presiding.
Burial will follow at Ulysses Cemetery
in Ulysses.

MARGARET CLINESMITH
HUGOTON -- Margaret Ellen Clinesmith, 55, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
She was born March 14, 1947, to Leo Howard and Leone Margaret (Ipson) Clinesmith in Elkhart.
She was a lifetime resident of the Elkhart area.
She worked for Dollar General Store, cleaning and stocking.
Survivors include four brothers, Weldon Clinesmith and Robert Clinesmith and wife, Betty Jean, all of Rolla, Charles Clinesmith and wife, Carolyn, Hugoton, and Ramon Clinesmith and wife, Jill, Ulysses; three sisters, Phyllis Crawford, Hugoton, Esther Smith, Canon City, Colo., and Norma Keener, Hulbert, Okla.; and numerous other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Jimmy and Harold Clinesmith.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Rolla with the Rev. Jerry Odle presiding.
Burial will be at Rolla Cemetery
in Rolla.

RAMON R. KITSON
ULYSSES -- Ramon R. Kitson, 74, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.
He was born Nov. 21, 1927, to Ewing F. and Delia (Beaushaw) Kitson in Turon.
He married Maxine Cromer Feb. 11, 1951, in St. John. She survives.
He attended school in Turon and graduated high school in Stafford.
He was employed by Stanolind Oil & Gas Company, later British Petroleum in Ulysses, in the Stano Gas Plant from 1953 until his retirement in 1982.
He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.
He was a member of United Methodist Church in Ulysses. He had been active in Citizens Band Radio and React Club and was a past member of Southwest Wheatbelt Coachmen Club.
Other survivors include two sons, Larry Ray Kitson and companion, Joyce Morgan, Durango, Colo., and Kevin Kitson and wife, Lisa, Woodland Park, Colo.; one brother, Manuel O. Kitson, Penrose, Colo.; one sister, Berniece Edwards, Granite Falls, Wash.; two granddaughters, Donna K. Kitson and Kimberley Kitson, both of Wichita; and numerous other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers John J., Eugene, H.F. and E.L. Kitson; two sisters, Mary Jordan and Lucille Brown.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Ulysses with the Rev. Dennis Livingston presiding.
Burial will be at Ulysses Cemetery
in Ulysses.

DONALD K. DAVIS
DODGE CITY -- Donald K. Davis, 49, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at his home in Dodge City.
He was born July 4, 1953, to William E. "Bud" and Freda Mae Hale Davis in Meade.
He married Patricia Woods Feb. 24, 1999, in Dodge City. She survives.
He graduated from Meade High School in Meade.
He later enlisted in the United States Navy, serving until 1977. After his discharge, he returned to Meade and later moved to Dodge City in 1978.
While living in Dodge City, he was a plasma cutter for Roto-Mix of Dodge City.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Meade.
His hobbies included hunting and fishing.
Other survivors include one son, Bill Davis, Chowcilla, Calif.; one daughter, Kirsten Friess, Wichita; one brother, Douglas "Doug" Davis, Meade; one granddaughter; and three step-grandsons.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary Chapel in Meade with the Rev. Wayne Wilson presiding.
Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery
in Meade.
