MICHAEL BELL
FARMINGTON, N.M. -- Michael Bell, 75, former Liberal resident, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002.
He was born to John and Rosa Taylor in Pawnee, Okla.
He married Carol Jean Wood in 1978 in Hugoton. She survives.
He worked in pipeline construction all his life. He worked for 12 years with Hall Construction, Liberal; 12 years as a superintendent for Sterling Pipeline, Sterling, Colo.; and worked the last four years prior to his retirement for Four-Four Inc., Farmington, N.M.
He served as a marine in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He and his wife settled in Aztec, N.M. after he retired.
Other survivors include one son, Gary Bell, Cave Junction, Ore.; one daughter, Mikayla Bell, Henderson, Texas; one step-son, Dennis Wood, Fruitland, N.M.; one daughter-in-law, Cindy Wood, Hugoton; one brother, E.H. Bell, Liberal; one sister, Shirley Combest, Enid, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Johnny Bell and Britt Wood; one granddaughter, Amanda; one great-granddaughter, Tia; and two sisters.
Cremation has already taken place. Memorial services were Monday at United Church of Farmington in Farmington.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at Christian Church in Hugoton.
Alternative Society Funeral Home in Farmington was in charge of arrangements.
ELIZABETH (KOEHN) CONQUEST
MONTEZUMA -- Elizabeth (Koehn) Conquest, 89, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma.
She was born Jan. 17, 1913, to Solomon C. and Julia (Schmidt) Koehn in Chickasha, Okla.
She married Glen Conqest May 17, 1969, in Newton. He died January 1974.
She was a housekeeper for Halstead Hospital in Halstead.
She was a resident of Bethel Home Inc. since March 12, 2002, coming from Newton.
She was a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma.
Survivors include eight nephews, Paul Koehn and wife, Marlene, Montezuma, Leroy Koehn and wife, Lila, Copeland, Lawrence Koehn and wife, Verna, Copeland, Earl Koehn and wife, Geraldine, Montezuma, DeeWayne Koehn and wife, Evadna, Livingston, Calif., Jay Dean Koehn and wife, Frances, Montezuma, Galen Koehn and wife, Fern, Olathe, and James R. Koehn and wife, Janice, Montezuma; three nieces, Fern Jantz and husband, Vernon, Montezuma, Delores Unruh and husband, Carl, Moundridge, and Valetha Koehn and husband, Orvin, Burns; one niece-in-law, Mae Koehn, Montezuma; and numerous other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Raymond Koehn, Alvin Koehn and Lewis Koehn; one sister, Mamie Koehn; and one nephew, Robert Koehn.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma with the Ministers Donald Koehn, Kalvin Salsbury and Luther Smith presiding.
Burial will be at North Mennonite Cemetery
in Montezuma.

CARL TEDFORD
Carl Tedford, 93, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born March 22, 1909, to Warren and Alice (Honnen) Tedford in Pond Creek, Okla.
He married Lilly Marie Crellin Jan. 19, 1932, in Wichita. She died April 10, 1985.
He was a resident of Liberal since 1945.
He was a farmer and owned and operated the Massey-Ferguson Dealership from 1945-1992 and the Tedford Motor Company from 1946-1956.
He was a Liberal City Commissioner from 1947-1949 and served as Mayor of Liberal from 1948-1949.
He was a member of First Christian Church and was a former member of Liberal Lion's Club and the Elks.
Survivors include two sons, Floyd Tedford, Liberal, and Bryce Tedford, Floris, Okla.; one daughter, Carlene Kirkpatrick, Liberal; nine grandchildren, Susie Glen, Matthew Tedford, Greg Simmons, Brad Simmons, Lisa Butler, Norman Tedford, Sherri Minzey, Rosie Murphy and Kimberly Tedford; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Mervin Tedford; two brothers, Lloyd Tedford and George Tedford; one sister, LaVera Dupont; and one half-sister, Grace Maddox.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Liberal with the Rev. John S. Andrews presiding.
Burial will be at Restlawn Cemetery
in Liberal.
Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

IRMA J. PHILLIPS
WICHITA -- Irma Jane Phillips, 85, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in Wichita.
Survived include three sons, Galen Phillips, Mulvane, Carl Phillips, Derby, and Clay Phillips, Liberal; two daughters, Anna Karhoff, Parsons, and Inace Wilson, Wichita; three brothers, Arthur, Glen and Marvin Dye, all of Norman, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Primrose Chapel in Norman, Okla., with the Rev. Robert E. Dye presiding.
Burial will be at Denver Cemetery.

MARIE M. GROVES
HUGOTON -- Marie May Groves, 93, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.
She was born May 29, 1909, to Albert and Augusta (May) Mantzke in Stevens County.
She married James A. "Dude" Groves. He died in 1984.
She and her husband moved from Alva, Okla., to Hugoton.
She welded on ships in San Diego, Calif., during World War II. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include two nephews, Larry Mantzke, Hugoton, and Frank Dwayne Mantzke, Fort Smith, Ark.; one niece, Francine Colella, Longmont, Colo.; one niece-in-law, Doris Mantzke, Hugoton; and numerous other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Hoyt Groves; one brother, Frank Mantzke; one sister, Emma Mosher; one nephew, Verl Mantzke; and one niece, Phyllis Traver.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Assembly of God Church in Hugoton with the Rev. Robert Bailey presiding.
Burial will be at Hugoton Cemetery
in Hugoton.

BONNIE R. ECKAS
Johnson -- Bonnie Ruth Eckas, 64, die Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at her home in Johnson.
She was born March 8, 1938, to Milton Earl and Audra L. (Ogle) Burnett in Manter.
She married Robert Eckas July 22, 1956, in Greeley, Colo. He survives.
In 1946, she and her family moved to Greeley and returned to to Stanton County in 1962.
She was the Stanton County Clerk of District Court for 28 years, and in 1995 she became the chief clerk for the 26th Judicial District and served until her retirement in June 2000.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Manter, church treasury, UMW, Joyfull Noise Bell Choir, Meadowlark Club, and was past president of the Kansas Association of District Court Clerks and Administrators in 1981.
Other survivors include one son, Kevin Eckas, Augusta; one daughter, Terri Ross, Grand Junction, Iowa; two sisters, Velda Folger, Manter, and Cliffie De Casper, Carson City, Nev.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Manter with the Rev. Kevin Seuser presiding.
Burial will follow at Stanton County Cemetery
in Johnson.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson.

CARRIE U. DIRKS
MONTEZUMA -- Carrie Unruh Dirks, 93, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Bethel Home in Montezuma.
She was born Aug. 31, 1909, to Cornelius and Effie Koehn Unruh Aug. 31, 1909, in Tampa.
She married Jake H. Dirks Dec. 1, 1928, in Dodge City. He died May 31, 1987.
She was a Sunday school teacher and Bible teacher for 47 years at Asbury Methodist Church in Wichita.
She and her husband moved to Montezuma when her husband became ill with Alzheimer's.
She reunited with the Mennonite Church in 1986.
Survivors include two sons, Roland Dirks and wife, Ora Lee, Hutchinson, and Everett Dirks and wife, Terry, Santa Rosa, Calif.; one son-in-law, Charles Bowman; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, William C. Unruh, Wichita; and two sisters, Ella Dirks and Della Schmidt, both of Montezuma.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; two brothers; and one daughter, Phyllis.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma with the Ministers Wilbur Koehn and Harold Koehn presiding.
Burial will be at North Mennonite Cemetery
in Montezuma.
