BETTY J. CARR
SATANTA -- Betty Jean Carr, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit in Satanta.
She was born July 25, 1924, to Peter and Viola (Muck) Schlegel in Alexander.
She married Harvey LeRoy Carr Aug. 20, 1944, in LaCrosse. He died Nov. 2, 1980.
She was a housekeeping superviser at Satanta District Hospital for many years. She was a Realtor Estate Owner.
She was a past member of Satanta District Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include one sister, Donna Sparks, Mesquite, Texas; one brother-in-law, George York, Haysville; three grandchildren, Amy Romero and husband, Leo, Ulysses, Jody Small and husband, Daniel, Moscow, and Katey Carr, Ulysses; five great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Roy Carr; three brothers, Richard Schlegel, Bob Schlegel and Darrel Schlegel; and one sister, Viola York.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Satanta with the Ministers Ray Tweed and Tom Massey presiding.
Burial will be at Dudley Township Cemetery
in Satanta.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.

VERLA G. MACFEE
Verla G. Macfee, 81, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Liberal.
She was born Aug. 8, 1921, to Ralph A. and Alice F. (Fair) Haight in Stevens County.
She married Bill Clark in 1938.
She graduated from Hugoton High School.
She lived in Hooker, Okla., Winfield and Sedan before moving to Liberal in 1993.
She worked in furniture sales for 25 years.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Liberal.
Survivors include one son, Spencer Clark and wife, Nancy, Aurora, Colo.; one brother, Darrell Haight and wife, Delores, Wichita; one sister, LaVaun Knier, Hugoton; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Charles Haight; and two daughters, Alice Carter and Sheri Handlin.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miller Chapel in Liberal with the Rev. Ken Hathaway presiding.
Burial will be at Liberal Cemetery.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time Wednesday at Miller Mortuary.
SOPHIA L. REDGER
MONTEZUMA -- Sophia Lizzie Redger, 94, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma, where she had been a resident since 1990.
She was born Feb. 24, 1908, to Jacob B. and Katie (Wedel) Eck in Coy, Okla.
She married Adam R. Redger May 18, 1927, in Dodge City. He died June 29, 1989.
She and her husband lived on a farm between Greensburg and Coldwater for 15 years. In 1943, they moved to a farm near Abilene. In 1963, they sold their farm and moved into Abilene. She moved from Abilene to Montezuma April 20, 1990.
She was a homemaker. She was a piemaker at Abilene Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1978.
She was a member of Brethren In Christ Church, Brethren In Christ Sewing Circle, both in Abilene, and taught child evangelism in her home. She attended Morningside Community Church in Montezuma. She taught Sunday School for many years.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Redger and wife, Ruth, Liberal, Ernest Redger, Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Charles "Chuck" Redger and wife, Judy, Aurora, Colo.; one daughter, Naomi Base, Susanville, Calif.; one brother, Arthur J. Eck, Willits, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; six step-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Community Church in Montezuma with the Pastor Lyn Hansen presiding.
Graveside services will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Cemetery
in Abilene.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma.

GODFREY C. MILLER
EL DORADO -- Godfrey Carson Miller, 76, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at a local nursing home.
He was born Aug. 29, 1926, to Godfrey and Ada (Farney) Miller in Burlington, Okla.
He married Emma Bahr July 22, 1951, in Gridley. She survives.
He attended high school in Kiowa and graduated from high school in 1944. He then enlisted in the United States Army. He received a degree from Butler County Community Junior College in 1975.
He served aboard the United States Army Hospital Ship. He was discharged July 19, 1946, with the rank of sergeant. After his military service, he started farming with his uncle.
He and his wife moved to El Dorado in January of 1957, where he was assistant manager for Antrim Lumber. In December of 1958 he took a position with Kansas Gas and Electric as a sales representative. He worked for KG&E until his retirement in August of 1990.
In his spare time, he established a rental business and took pride in improving the property. He planted more than 100 trees on his property.
He was a member of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Explorers. He served as an officer of Bluestem Kiwanis and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing and hiking.
Other survivors include two sons, Gary Christopher and wife, Debbie, Liberal, and Larry Eugene and friend, Teresa Lewis, El Dorado; one daughter, Jane Susan and fiance, Drew Hatch, El Dorado; one brother, Dr. R.J. Miller, Peoria, Ill.; one stepbrother, Harvey Hartman, Watseka, Ill.; four stepsisters, Mable Springer and Lucille Schurter, both of Fort Scott, Evelyn Maliamare, Simi Valley, Calif., and Ruth Hartman, Peoria, Ill.; and six grandchildren, Denita, Satina, Ashley, Blain, Devin and Matthew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather; one sister; one stepbrother; one daughter-in-law, Deena; and two infant sons.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Apostolic Christian Church in Wichita.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home in El Dorado.

EARL S. SHELTON
HUGOTON -- Earl S. Shelton, 65, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.
He was born March 4, 1937, to Merle S. and Hilda (Beckman) Shelton in Stevens County.
He married Barbara Phifer May 26, 1956, in Hugoton. She survives.
He was a lifetime resident of Hugoton.
He was a member of First Christian Church, Masonic Lodge No. 406 and the Mid America Antique Tractor Association, all in Hugoton.
His hobbies included telling jokes, meeting friends at coffee shops, travelling to South Texas and Arizona, antique tractors, camping, and farming.
Other survivors include two sons, Mike Shelton and wife, Terry, Hugoton, and Rick Shelton, Hugoton; one brother, Larry Shelton and wife, Trish, Woodward, Okla.; three sisters, Ruby Rowden and husband, Everett, Hugoton, Pearl Phillips, Pecos, Texas, and Ruth Zimmerman, Hiawatha; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Terry Shelton; one sister, Esther Dunham; and one grandson, Jerimy Shelton.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in Hugoton with the Minister Robert Bailey presiding.
Burial will be at Hugoton Cemetery
in Hugoton.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

NANCY A. COWSER
ROLLA -- Nancy Ann Cowser, 45, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
She was born Sept. 17, 1956, to Virgil E. and Betty L. (Wilmut) Wilcox in Hugoton.
She married Robert Dale Cowser March 29, 1975, in Hugoton. He died Nov. 14, 1993.
She was a lifetime Rolla area resident.
She graduated from Rolla High School in Rolla.
She was a homemaker.
Her hobbies included spending time with her family, traveling, line dancing, fishing, and playing darts and pool.
Survivors include her mother, Hugoton; one daughter, Robin D. Cowser, Hugoton; one brother, Bobby Lee Wilcox, Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Betty Clinesmith and husband, Robert, Rolla, and Doris Feldman and husband, Howard, Seattle; numerous nephews and nieces and other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by her father; and one brother, Terry Ray Wilcox.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rolla Cemetery
in Rolla with the Minister Robert Bailey presiding.
