RICHARD A. MASON
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Richard Alan Mason, 58, Lincoln, died Friday, April 12, 2002, in Lincoln.
He was born Dec. 18, 1943, to J.B. and Virginia (Kimzey) Mason in Liberal.
He graduated from Hugoton High School and from Fort Hayes State College in Hayes.
He was a Vietnam War veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force.
He was pension administrator at Security Financial Life Insurance Company in Lincoln. He also served as a Pine Lake Advisor.
He was one of the Volunteers of the Year for 2000 for the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department. He volunteered with competitive diving and swimming at Lincoln Parks and Recreation.
He was a member of Eastridge Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret "Marnie"; two sons, Benjamin Guy Mason and Matthew Ryan Mason and wife, Theresa, all of Lincoln; his father, of Hugoton; one grandson, Aiden Mason, Lincoln; one uncle, Gene Mason, Fort Collins, Colo.; and three aunts, Fern Guyer, Hugoton, Mary Alice Larkins, Ponchatoula, La., and Edith Maxcy, Dallas.
He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents, Lena and Guy Kimzey and Bess and Noman Mason.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Eastridge Presbyterian Church in Lincoln.
Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery
in Lincoln.
Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. Monday, with the family available to greet friends from 6-8 p.m., at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln.

LOGUSTA DUTCHER
HUGOTON Logusta Dutcher, 84, Hugoton, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
She was born Sept. 24, 1918, to Harvey L. and Orrie (Flynt) Heizer in Dalton, Neb.
She married Robert C. Dutcher Jan. 4, 1942 in Dallas.
She moved to Hugoton in 1950.
She graduated from nursing school in Hastings, Neb., and started a nursing program in Waco, Texas.
She worked as a registered nurse at the Hugoton Clinic, and worked for Dr. Frederick and Dr. LaNeve for many years.
She was a home-room grandmother for Shelly Perry's first-grade class, and often worked as a school nurse. The children called her Grandma Gussie.
Her hobbies included China painting, reading, gardening, traveling, and visiting with family.
Survivors include one son, Robert M. Dutcher and wife, Lupe, Grants, N.M.; four grandchildren, Ben Dutcher, Leticia Weller, Kelly Dutcher, and Eric Dutcher; three great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Hugoton with the Rev. Nel Holmes presiding.
Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton is in charge of arrangements.
R. CASTRO DE CARRILLO
PLAINS Rita Castro de Carrillo died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Meade District Hospital in Meade.
She was born Feb. 12, 1930, to Francisco Castro and Cruz Hernandez in Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico.
She married Juan Carrillo Feb. 28, 1945, in Mexico. He survives.
She had worked in the fabrication department at National Beef in Liberal.
She had been a resident of Plains for the past six years.
She was a member of the Iglesia Evangelica Cristiana Espiritual Church in Plains.
Other survivors include seven sons, Jose Carrillo, Plains, Moises Carrillo, Omaha, Neb., Abraham Carrillo, Sioux Falls, S.D., Ruben Carrillo, Lamar, Adrian Carrillo and Juan Carrillo, both of Wichita, and Aaron Carrillo, Kansas City; two daughters, Martha Carrillo and Rita Carrillo, both of Plains; two brothers and two sisters, all of Mexico; 45 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary Chapel in Meade, with the Pastor Nehemias Saraña presiding.
Burial will be at the Plains Cemetery
in Plains.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

CHARLES HICKOK
FOWLER -- Charles Hickok, 80, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Meade District Hospital in Meade.
He was born Jan. 22, 1922, to Charles William and Mary Frances (McGillivray) Hickok in Halstead.
He married Jeanne K. St. Lawrence April 7, 1947, in Ulysses. She survives.
He graduated from Ulysses High School in 1940 and from Chanute Junior College in 1942.
He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II.
He was a retired plant operator for Mesa Petroleum.
He had been a resident of Fowler since 1984, having moved from Ulysses.
He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fowler.
He was a board member of the Southwest Kansas Area Council on Aging, Southwest Kansas Gem and Mineral Society, Circulator and Whirlaway Square Dancers Club and was a former 4-H leader in Grant County.
Other survivors include one son, Charles Michael Hickok, Phoenix; three daughters, Janice May Hickok, Tulsa, Okla., Evelyn Annette Fink, Ulysses, Linda Jo Hickok, Belle Plaine; and one brother, Donald Hickok, Ulysses.
Vigil services will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fowler.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with the Father Zino Ye Swe presiding.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Ulysses Cemetery
in Ulysses.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

MARY ATTERBERRY
DIGHTON -- Mary Atterberry, 89, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Lane County Long Term Care Unit in Dighton.
She was born May 15, 1912, to John and Nancy Ellen (Walters) Murphy in Lane County.
She married Roy Atterberry Aug. 5, 1931, in Ness City. He died Feb. 23, 1994.
She was raised on her family's farm in rural Lane County and later moved to Dighton. She graduated from Lane County Community High School.
She had been a long-time resident of Lane County.
She and her husband farmed, and she was a homemaker, seamstress and cook.
Her hobbies included attending her daughter's horse shows and sporting events, bowling, ceramics and traveling with her husband.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen Duncan and husband, W.R., Liberal; four brothers, Woodrow Murphy, Dighton, Jim Murphy, Scott City, Larry Murphy, Wichita, and Carlos Murphy, Hutchinson; two sisters, Alice Gabel, Ellis, and
Betty Whiting, Newton; and one grandson, Trey Duncan, Liberal.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Mike Murphy; and three sisters, Nellie Mumma, Kathryn Moomaw and Mable Hutchins.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Dighton with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell presiding.
Burial will be at Dighton Memorial Cemetery
in Dighton.

MARY E. MADDOX
BURLINGTON, Colo. -- Mary Ella Maddox, 100, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Grace Manor Care Center in Burlington.
She was born May 29, 1901, to Charles E. and Minnie L. (Fuller) Beeton southeast of Alva, Okla., near Hopeton.
She married Cardiff Leslie Maddox March 21, 1926, at the family farm. He died June 13, 1941.
She attended a rural grade school near Hopeton. She attended Bethany College in Lindsborg for one year.
She and her husband lived on the farm they acquired in 1928. After her husband's death, she continued to live on the farm, and with the help of her brother-in-law, Levi, she ran the farm. She also cared for older people in Alva.
She gave piano lessons for several years at the Friends Church and to children in Alva. She later taught piano lessons in Wichita.
She moved to Wichita in 1977, and in 1987, she moved to Burlington.
She had been a resident of the Burlington Care Center until 1997, when she was moved to the Grace Manor Care Center.
She was a member of the Bethany United Brethren Church and later became a member of the Friends Church in Alva, where she played piano for several years.
Her hobbies included playing the piano and making tapes of her playing.
Survivors include one son, Glenn Maddox and wife, Wilma, Burlington; one brother, Homer Beeton and wife, Ruth, Liberal; one grandson, Tom Maddox and wife, Trish, Aurora, Colo.; three great-grandchildren, Josh, Courtney and Charles; four great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Edith Mosshart and Ethel Raymer; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wharton Funeral Chapel in Alva with the Rev. Nick Shaffer presiding.
Burial will be at Short Spring Cemetery
in Alva.
