REV. J.R. LAWSON

SATANTA -- The Rev. J.R. Lawson, 88, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born April 1, 1913, to William M. and Bertha (Gass) Lawson in Hammon, Okla.

He married Jurhee Moody Nov. 21, 1934, in Sayre, Okla. She died Feb. 28, 1995.

He graduated from the Hammon High School. He later attended seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

He served the ministry for more than 50 years, including at churches in Texas: Wellington, Ballinger, Abilene, Denton, Kellerville, Borger and Muenster; two churches in Oklahoma: Hooker and Waynoka; and churches in Leadville and Satanta. He retired from the church in Satanta. Following retirement, he was intern pastor in Ulysses.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Satanta.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodges in Hugoton and McClean, Texas, and Gutherie Consistory as a 32 degree Mason. He was a former member of the Lions Club in Hooker and the IOOF Lodge.

Survivors include one son, Hershel W. Lawson and wife, Janet, Satanta; two daughters, Carol Beth Scoggins and husband, J.D., North Platte, Neb., and Kay Jarvis and husband, David W., McAlister, Okla.; five grandchildren, John Lawson and wife, Jill, Grand Prairie, Texas, Kayla (Scoggins) States and husband, Dr. Douglas, North Platte, Neb., Devon Scoggins, Denver, Lori Bailey, Pinnellas, Fla., Michael Painter and wife, Adrienna, St. Petersberg, Fla.; and 11 great-grandchildren, Jessica, Joshua, Janessa and Jarae States, all of North Platte, Tiffany and Angela Bailey, both of Pinnellas Park, Shyla Bailey, Bremerton, Wash., and Michael, Ashley and Patrick Painter, all of St. Petersberg.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William Guy and Hershel E. Lawson; one sister, Muriel Brewer; and one nephew, Bob Brewer.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Satanta, with the Rev. Ray Tweed presiding.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Satanta.

Burial with Masonic rites will be at the Hooker Cemetery in Hooker.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church in Satanta, or to the Gideons, both in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67901.

ALICE (UNRUH) YOST

MONTEZUMA -- Alice (Unruh) Yost, 96, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at the Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma.

She was born April 19, 1905, to Andrew B. and Susie (Jantz) Unruh in Durham.

She married Albert Unruh Nov. 18, 1926. He died Oct. 2, 1947.

She married John Yost Oct. 28, 1956. He died Aug. 31, 1974.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma.

Survivors include two daughters, Maxine Schroeder and husband, Robert, Transylvania, La., and Norma Unruh and husband, Melvin, Macon, Miss.; three step-sons, Arlin Yost and wife, Florence, Montezuma, Wilbur Yost and wife, Dorothy, Copeland, and Earl Yost and wife, Inez, Iroquois, S.D.; three step-daughters, Dorothy Yost, Montezuma, Orreda Yost, Livingston, Calif., and Priscilla Harlow and husband, LeDon, Satanta; one sister, Wilda Yost, Ulysses; 38 grandchildren, 25 step-grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, 78 step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Gary Unruh; two step-sons, Howard Yost and Loran Yost; four brothers, Albert, John, Frank and Andrew Unruh Jr.; and three sisters, Lydia Jantz, Lena Unruh and Mabel Unruh.

Funeral services were today at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma, with the Ministers Donald Koehn, Edwin Classen and Luther Smith presiding.

Burial was at the North Mennonite Cemetery in Montezuma under the direction of the Montezuma Funeral Home.

JIMMIE L. PEMBERTON

KINGWOOD, Texas -- Jimmie L. Pemberton, 62, former Beaver, Okla., resident, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2002, after a battle with lung cancer.

She was born Aug. 27, 1939, in Beaver.

She married Stanley Keith Pemberton 34 years ago. He survives.

She was a senior director for Mary Kay Cosmetics. She was a housewife and mother.

Other survivors include her step-father, Melvin Garrett, Forgan, Okla.; one daughter, Brandee Eichelsdorfer and husband, Stephen, Kingwood; two sons, Chuck Dunlap, Beaumont, Texas, and Russell Dunlap and wife, Debbie, Richmond, Texas; two sisters, Ila Burghardt, San Antonio, Texas, and Charlotte Slater, Texarkana, Texas; one brother, Jerry Potter, Patterson, La.; and five grandchildren, Amy Dunlap-Gholson, Lindsay Dunlap, Chuck Lee Dunlap Jr., Morgan Eichelsdorfer and Matthew Eichelsdorfer.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Kingwood Funeral Home in Kingwood.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society Memorial Honor Program, P.O. Box 570127, Houston, TX 77257-0127.

MARY C. BOGART

KIRWIN -- Mary C. Bogart, 82, mother of Liberal resident Linda McCullough, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Sioux Valley Hospice in Sioux Falls, S.D.

She was born May 27, 1919, to Frank and Mary (McCoy) Gripp in Penokee.

She married Hubert Bogart Aug. 29, 1939, in Olathe. He died Feb. 13, 1997.

She was a resident of Kirwin.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kirwin.

She was a member of the Eastern Star No. 183.

Survivors include four daughters, Kay Schuster, Owassa, Okla., Linda McCullough, Liberal, Kathy Hrabe, Tempe, Ariz., and Dede Bennett, Brandon, S.D.; four brothers, Russell Gripp, Palo Cedro, Calif., Claude Gripp, Smith Center, Francis Gripp, Kansas City, and Bernard Gripp; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Mick Bogart; and one daughter, Shirley McDowell.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Kirwin.

Burial will follow at the Bogart Cemetery south of Kirwin.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Kirwin.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice Services.

ROY I. BORDEN

Roy I. Borden, 80, Liberal, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

MERRY ANN WEDEL

DERBY -- Merry Ann Wedel, 49, Derby, formerly of Liberal, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita.

She was born March 11, 1952, to Hudene C. and Edna M. (Casady) Correll in Liberal.

She attended school at Brown's Corner, Kismet, and graduated from Southwestern Heights High School in 1970.

She worked in accounting for Jim Haddock and later for Keating Tractor Co. in Liberal.

She had been employed by Raytheon Corporation in Wichita since 1989.

She was a member of Rebekah Lodge No. 522 in Liberal.

Survivors include two sons, Mike Wedel and wife, Kirstin, Fort Riley, and Craig Wedel and wife, Vickie, Mulvane; one daughter, Stacy Wedel, Derby; her mother, of Liberal; three brothers, Mike Correll, Hennypin, Okla., Hudene Correll and wife, Carol, Spearville, and Norvan Correll and wife, Barbara, Liberal; one sister, Marsha Johnson and husband, Mickey, Macksville; and six grandchildren, Tyler, Quintin, Chance, Trinity, Cailey and Brileigh Wedel.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Mulvane.

Additional memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miller Chapel in Liberal.

Inurnment will be at Liberal Cemetery in Liberal.

SHIRLEY J. MCCLAFLIN

SUBLETTE -- Shirley Jean McClaflin, 62, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at her home in Sublette.

She was born Aug. 10, 1939, to George and Marguerite (Sternberger) Yochum in Alva, Okla.

She married Mac McClaflin June 19, 1959, in Wellington. He died Jan. 15, 2001.

She was a member of Sublette Southern Baptist Church in Sublette.

Her hobbies included gardening and growing flowers, sewing, making crafts of dolls and quilts, doing genealogy and going places with her friends.

Survivors include one daughter, Cindy Lozar and husband, Chuck, Satanta; two grandchildren, Ashlie Lozar and Chase Lozar, both of Satanta; her mother, Kiowa; one step-brother, Richard Yochum, San Antonio; two sisters, Kathleen McCarty and husband, Jerry, Great Bend, and Linda Dyck and husband, Lane, Tampa; and numerous other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Southern Baptist Church in Sublette with the Ministers Dan Pearce and Jerry Smith presiding.

Burial will be at Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.

LOLA BUHRER

SYRACUSE -- Lola Buhrer, 89, Syracuse, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, in Ulysses.

She was born May 1, 1912, to Abraham and Elizabeth (Ollenberger) Schale in Beaver County, Okla.

She married Mike Buhrer March 30, 1931, in Lamar, Colo. He preceded her in death in 1986.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Syracuse.

She was also member of the Grandmother's Club in Syracuse and was past president of the VIP Club in Syracuse.

Her hobbies included doing ceramics, glass blowing, crafts, quilting and crochet.

Survivors include one son, Leroy Buhrer, Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Betty Warner, Ulysses; one brother, Estil Schale, Bakersfield, Calif.; three sisters, Edna Jennings and husband, Larry, Springfield, Colo., Eva Moorhead, Montrose, Colo., and Ellen Gentzler, Ulysses; four grandchildren, Rita Gee, Vickie Williams, Doug Warner and Judy Dieker; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Herbert Schale; and one son-in-law, Bud Warner.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. (MST) Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Syracuse with the Rev. William W. Fitzgerrel presiding.

Burial will follow at the Syracuse Cemetery in Syracuse.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses and from 10 a.m. (MST) until service time Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Syracuse.

The family suggests memorials to either Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses, First United Methodist Church in Syracuse or to the donor's choice, all in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.
