MARIA C. ALVAREZ
EAGLE PASS, Texas -- Maria C. Alvarez, 55, former Liberal resident and mother of Liberal resident Julie Clinesmith, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
Funeral service arrangements are pending from Memorial Funeral Chapel in Eagle Pass.
CHARLES H. BRIER
Charles H. Brier, 82, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal following a sudden illness.
He was born May 28, 1919, to Edward and Etta (Hammontree) Brier in Liberal.
He graduated from Liberal High School in 1938.
He married Geraldine Thomas June 17, 1941 in Liberal. She survives.
He lived in Chicago for five years where he worked for the Reems Manufacturing Co. He and his wife returned to Seward County where he farmed in the Woods community. He was also a custom harvester for more than 40 years, harvesting from Texas to northern Montana until his retirement in 1991.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Liberal.
He was a charter member of the Elks Lodge No. 1947 in Liberal.
His favorite hobby was gardening.
Other survivors include one brother, Howard Brier, Tyrone, Okla.; one sister, Jo Hollingsworth, Liberal; one brother-in-law, Jesse Thomas, Sublette; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Herman Brier; and one sister, Mary Byerley.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Liberal, with Dr. John Loucks presiding.
Burial will follow at the Liberal Cemetery.
Friends may call from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8-11 a.m. Wednesday at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.
The family suggests memorials to the First Christian Church, the Southwest Kansas Humane Society, or to the donor's choice, in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67905.
GEORGE R. WINCHELL JR.
George R. Winchell Jr., 88, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Via Christi St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born Aug. 2, 1913, to George and Mary (Anderson) Winchell in Texas County, Okla.
He married Naomi Ruth Chrisbens Feb. 27, 1935. She died in November 1938.
He married Martha Dobson Aug. 20, 1947, in Liberal. She survives.
He was educated in Tyrone, Okla.
He was a life-long resident of the Liberal area.
He farmed and ranched most of his life. He owned a farm north of Liberal and owned and operated George Winchell Inc., a livestock hauling company, until the early 1970s. He then owned and operated Winchell Ranch until his retirement.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, VFW and American Legion, all in Liberal.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Other survivors include two sons, George R. "Rick" Winchell III, Abilene, Texas, and Charles "Chuck" Winchell, Balko, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Ruth Joan Dougherty; two sisters, Ruth Rudeman and Ivy Reed; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Liberal with Pastor David Bagwell presiding.
Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery
in Liberal.
Friends may call until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

WALLACE L. PEARSON
KISMET -- Wallace L. Pearson, 75, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at his home in Kismet.
He was born April 15, 1926, to Frederick and Elizabeth (Booth) Pearson in Plains. He was raised by Chester and Elizabeth Morrison.
He married Lois E. Schweitzberger March 10, 1950, in Marysville. She survives.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He lived in Marysville, where he worked as a spray pilot and commercial pilot.
He returned to Liberal in 1950 and was a police officer for the City of Liberal. He later worked for Beech Aircraft, where he ferried planes for many years.
He was employed as a heavy equipment operator by Seward County and later owned and operated his own dirt contracting business for seven years. He retired in 1981.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Liberal, where he served as a Sunday school teacher for several years.
He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Order of Easter Star, all in Plains, and the Wichita Consistory.
His hobbies included competitive target and skeet shooting and hunting.
Other survivors include one son, Lynn Pearson and wife, Debra, Woodward, Okla.; one sister, Edna Bell Pearson, Meade; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Miller Chapel in Liberal with Bob Deacon presiding.
Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Liberal.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until service time Thursday at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

SANDRA K. FELKINS
OFFERLE -- Sandra Kay "Sandy" Felkins, 55, formerly of Liberal, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
She was born Dec. 28, 1945, to Lloyd and Goldie (Rasler) Smith in Liberal.
She married Fred Felkins Nov. 18, 1995, in Coldwater. He survives.
She lived in the Liberal area until 1986, when she moved to Spearville and then to Offerle.
She worked as a life skills instructor for Arrowhead West -- Kinsley branch for 14 years, where she taught handicapped adults life skills.
She attended the Offerle United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Women's Bowling Association and bowled with Lucky Liquor Team.
Other survivors include three sons, Ronnie Burns, Offerle, Jim Burns, Wichita and Troy Davis, Garden City; one step-son, Thierry Felkins, Kinsley; two step-daughters, Cindy Rabe and Sonia Hays, both of Bucklin; her mother, Goldie Kerns, Hooker, Okla.; two sisters, Joyce Tedrow, Scott City, and Jonnie Slatten, Tyrone, Okla.; 13 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel in Liberal with Pastor Avery Rutledge presiding.
Burial will follow at Liberal Cemetery
in Liberal.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Offerle United Methodist Church in Offerle.

ZANADA KERBOW
HUGOTON -- Zanada Kerbow, 94, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.
She was born Jan. 22, 1907, to William and Josephine (Caldwell) Wiley in Durwood, Okla.
She married Lewis Marion Kerbow Feb. 25, 1934, in Lamar, Colo. He died April 19, 1982.
After marriage, she and her husband lived in Hugoton, where they operated Lewis's Cleaning Service for 25 years. After closing the store, she did alterations and sewing out of her home.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Hugoton and the Ladies VFW Auxiliary.
Her hobbies included gardening and sewing.
Survivors include two sons, Albert T. Renfro, Ulysses, and Eddie Kerbow and wife, Connie, Hugoton; one daughter, Edna Faye Brower, Moscow; one sister, Veta Dixon, Downey, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Mike Kerbow; one granddaughter, Natalie (Kerbow) O'Dell; one son-in-law, Laurence Brower; one daughter-in-law, Jeanette Renfro; three brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church of Hugoton with the Minister Jeff Aenk presiding.
Burial will be at Hugoton Cemetery
in Hugoton.
