Bernice H. Welsh 90 years of age, formerly of Atchison, KS died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Sharon Lane Health Home, Shawnee, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, March 27th, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Robert Ziegler, officiating. The body will be cremated following the services and private family burial of the cremated remains will be in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 PM on Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Bernice was born on Oct. 31, 1918 in Bern, KS, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Lear) Spellmeier. She graduated from the Fairview High School in 1937. Bernice was married to Nelson L. Welsh on Nov. 12, 1944 in Topeka, KS. Mr. Welsh preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 1984. They formerly owned and operated the Whiskey Rebellion Liquor Store, in Winthrop, MO for twenty-four years, from 1977 to 2001. Mrs. Welsh was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Mission of Love Quilters and was a member of the Martha Circle of Trinity, and helped with funeral dinners. She was a past President and Treasurer of the Atchison Retarded Citizens Association, and past President, Treasurer for the Lutheran Women Missionary League (LWML). She was a past den mother for Cub Scout Pack 94, Trinity Lutheran and enjoyed her family.
Survivors include a son; Burdel (Cynthia) Welsh, Tonganoxie, KS, a daughter; Annette Welsh, Lawrence, KS., a brother, Emil Spellmeier, Fairview, KS, and two grandsons; Jim (Zila) Welsh, Lawrence, KS and Brian Welsh, Tonganoxie, KS. Her parents, husband, and two sisters, Alice Spellmeier and Alvina Krohe, preceded her in death.
James L. 'Jim' Hundley, 88, Cummings, KS, passed away, Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at his home with his loving family by his side.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Hendon, First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials in honor of Mr. Hundley are suggested to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or the Abundant Life Hospice and may be left in care of the funeral home. Jim was born December 29, 1921 in Atchison, the son of the late Henry B. and Ruby M. (Tull) Hundley. He was a member of the U.S. Army Infantry serving during World War II. Jim had worked at Midwest Solvents for 31 years retiring has a supervisor. He was a life member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion. Jim enjoyed going to the casino, playing cards, farming, conservation, traveling and especially spending time with all of his grandchildren.
Jim married Virginia Dunn-Ball on April 17, 1946 in Troy, KS. She preceded him in death on November 18, 1993. Survivors include sons, Leonard (Barb) Hundley, Lancaster, KS, Phillip (Jody) Hundley, Cummings, KS; a daughter, Sharon (Dan) Schuetz, Cummings, KS; brothers, Charles Hundley, Highland, CA, and Harold Hundley, Kirbyville, MO; sisters, Dorothy Wilburn, Delia ‘Pete’ Burge and Bettie Jean Miner, all of Atchison; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Jim was also preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Harden; brothers, Henry and Earl Hundley and a sister, Ruby Cox.
Stephen W. Langston, 63, Atchison, passed away, Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Ziegler, Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Mr. Langston has been cremated and no formal burial is planned. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:00 PM on Saturday at the funeral home. Stephen was born January 22, 1946 in Newport, AR, the son of the late Steve and Bessie (Allen) Langston. He graduated from high school in Newport, AR and then enlisted in the Army where he served for two years in South Korea. Stephen had worked as a gas station attendant in Kansas City, MO, as a welder and electrician for Trail Mobile and most recently in the custodial maintenance department in the VA Hospital, Topeka, KS. He enjoyed watching television and various types of movies.
Survivors include a sister; Donnie Langston, OK, and several nieces and nephews, including Steve Kley who had been his caretaker for the past few years.
He was also preceded in death by a sister; Kathy Mae Kley.
Rose Marie Perkins, 78 years of age, of Atchison, KS died Friday, January 15, 2010 at St. John’s Hospital, Leavenworth, KS.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM on Monday, Jan. 18th, 2010 at St. Benedicts Church, with Fr. Gerard Senecal, OSB as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atchison. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Jan. 17th, 2010 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm with a parish rosary recited at 8:30 PM at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Rose was born February 25, 1931 in Nortonville, KS the daughter of George and Leona (Shugart) Zishka. She graduated from Nortonville High School in 1949. Rose was married to James Leroy Perkins on May 19, 1951 at St. Joseph’s Church in Nortonville, KS. She was a cook for sixteen years at Valley Hope in Atchison and was a member of St. Benedicts Church and the VFW Auxiliary, Atchison, KS. Mrs. Perkins enjoyed gardening and cooking.
Survivors include her husband, James L. Perkins, of the home, three sons; Stephen(Gail) Perkins, Abilene, TX., Michael (Diane) Perkins, Atchison, KS, Joseph (Mary) Perkins, Atchison, KS, two daughters Diane (Jim) Handke, Huron, KS., Kathy (Joe) Bare, Atchison, KS, three brothers; A.E. Zishka, Boardsman, OH, Jim (Patti) Zishka, San Antonio, TX, Marvin (Phyllis) Zishka, Bonner Springs, KS, two sisters; Mary ( Donald) Kane, Atchison, KS., Helen ( Melvin) Whitlock, Dearborn, MO., fifteen grandchildren and two step grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and four brothers; Paul, Don, Leo and Harold Zishka.
Donald E. Smith II, 53, passed away Monday, January 11, 2010 at the Providence Medical Center in Kansas City.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, January 15, 2010 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Dr. David Mason officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery

Donald was born November 3, 1956 in Atchison, KS the son of Donald and Mavis (Hall) Smith. Mr. Smith worked for Swift Transportation as a recruiter and trainer for 22 years. He was a member of McCarthy Baptist Church; he enjoyed cooking, playing pool, bowling, bass fishing, cards, was an avid KU and Chiefs fan, but especially enjoyed his family.
Survivors include his parents Donald and Mavis Smith, two sons; Brett (Janelle) Smith, St. Joseph MO, Scott Smith, St. Joseph, MO, two daughters; Erica (Matthew) Marks, St. Joseph, MO, Alicia Smith, St. Joseph, MO, an ex-wife Connie Stubber, St. Joseph, MO, three brothers Wendall (Kim) Smith, Atchison, KS, Marty Smith, TX, Jason (Adriana) Hawk, TX, two sisters; Cindy (George) Maddox, Scarlet Smith, TX, two grandchildren Hannah Smith and Ezekiel Smith and many nieces and nephews.
Marvin O. Mikkelson, 72, went to be with the Lord on January 1, 2010. He was surrounded by his loving family at Heartland Regional Medical Center as he lost his battle with cancer. He was born on March 1, 1937 in Ortley, South Dakota. Marvin was the son of Ole and Anna (Pederson) Mikkelson.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2010 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Atchison. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. prior to the funeral at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church (Weinmann Room). Inurnment will take place at a later date. Marvin was employed with Pillsbury in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the Research and Development department and transferred to open a new division for Pillsbury in Atchison, Kansas. He went to work for AnaCon Foods as the Director of Operations until his retirement. He was an active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. He was an avid reader. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren; golfing, bowling, hunting, fishing, bird-watching and all sports.
On June 7, 1958 he married Jeanette Dallager in Minneapolis, MN. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons: Michael (Kathy) Mikkelson, Stilwell, KS, Mark (Debra) Mikkelson, Atchison, KS, one daughter, Kimberly (Wendall) Smith, Atchison, KS, a brother; David Mikkelson, Whitewood, SD, three sisters; Elvina Birney, Waubay, SD, Irene Bloom, Webster, SD and Ardys Becking, Webster, SD, and seven grandchildren. He is preceeded in death by his mother and father; and a sister, Margaret Nelson.
Robert L. 'Red' Richardson, 70, of Atchison, passed away Monday, December 28, 2009 at the Atchison Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Kerry Gage officiating. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery. Robert was born March 19, 1939 in Wave Land, IN, the son of the late Russell Floyd and Esther (Hunt) Richardson. Red had worked as a Security Guard and drove the Athletics bus at Benedictine college until his retirement. He had also worked at Wal-Mart, as a bus driver for USD #409, for the city of Atchison and at the Youth Center. Red was an avid sports fan and was a Sprint race car driver earlier in life. He especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren.
Red married Bonnie Reese on October 29, 1964 in Atchison, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include sons; Mike and Danny Richardson, both of Atchison and Jeff Russell, St. Joseph, MO, a daughter; Patty and Shane Brewer, St. Joseph, MO, brother; Max Richardson, Crawfordsville, IN, sisters; Patty Stemick and Janet Peters, both of McAllen, TX, 9 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Red was also preceded in death by sisters, Carolyn Deere and Shirley McClaine.
