ELKHART -- Jeremy Wayne McCarty, 18, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, in Amarillo, Texas.
He was born May 24, 1982, in Elkhart.
Survivors include his mother, Sharon Wanecek, Elkhart; one brother, Shawn Zeiher, Elkhart; and four sisters, Stacey Zeiher, Burnsville, Minn., Nicole Renee Zeiher, Cassandra Leigh Taylor and Angela Yvonne Wanecek, all of Elkhart.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Harrell Funeral Home in Elkhart with Terrell Giddens presiding.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society in care of Harrell Funeral Home, 514 Kansas, Elkhart, KS 67950.
BERTICE I. POWELL
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Bertice I. Powell, 86, former Liberal resident, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in Grand Island.
She was born June 7, 1914, to Samuel Elmer and Mabel Edith (Holstine) Gibson in Coffeyville.
She was a graduate from Pittsburg College.
She married Kenneth James Powell June 25, 1938, in Pittsburg. He died Jan. 5, 1991.
She was a primary school teacher until her marriage, at which time she became a homemaker.
She moved to Longmont, Colo., in 1977 from Liberal. She then moved to Grand Island in 1994.
She was a member of the Methodist Church women's circle, the hospital auxiliary and the Aurora Club, all of Liberal. She was head of the primary Sunday school department and was a Sunday school teacher for the Methodist Church in Liberal.
She was also a member of the New Creation World Outreach Church in Longmont. She was a Girl Scout leader.
She was involved with all of her children's activities.
Survivors include three daughters, Bertie Lou Madden, Longmont, Connie Mehl and husband, Gary, Grand Island, and Debbie Johnson and husband, Tom, Coweta, Okla.; six grandchildren, Scott Madden, Lorenda DiGiacomo and husband, Jay, Kathy Ronquillo and husband, Kerry, Greg Mehl and wife, Carol, Justin Johnson and Christin Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and one grandson, Wesley Johnson.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel of the New Creation World Outreach Church in Longmont, with the Rev. Ronnie Brumley presiding.
Burial will be at the Longmont Mountain View Cemetery
in Longmont.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
VERL LEON TIMKEN
HUGOTON -- Verl Leon Timken, 51, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at his home in Hugoton.
He was born Nov. 25, 1949, to Linly K. and Hazel L. (Hogan) Timken in Dodge City.
He was a lifetime resident of Hugoton.
He married Judy N. Nesbit Oct. 5, 1985, in Fort Worth, Texas. She survives.
He was a farmer.
He was a member of the Hugoton Baptist Church in Hugoton.
His hobbies included electric trains, and being an artist and musician. He was a music accomplished percussionist.
Other survivors include his parents of Hugoton; one son, Bradley J. Timken, Ulysses; two step-sons, Larry Cates and wife, Christine, and David Cates and wife, Judy, all of Fort Worth; two sisters, Linda Kay Johnson and husband, Andrew, Slidell, La., and Janice Turner and husband, James, Lindsborg; four step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and a host of other friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by one step-granddaughter, Jill Bateman.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Hugoton, with Minister Rob Hinkle presiding.
Burial will follow at the Hugoton Cemetery
in Hugoton.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.

FRED MIRES
PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- Fred Mires, 79, former Adams, Okla., resident, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, in Prescott.
He was born Feb. 16, 1922, to Gilbert Dudley and Effie (Gentry) Mires, three miles northeast of Adams.
He grew up and attended school in the Adams-Baker area. He graduated from Eureka High School in 1940.
He farmed and helped at the family store in Adams.
He attended college for two years at Panhandle A & M in Goodwell, Okla.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II, where he served aboard the USS Kilty, a WWII vintage, four-stack destroyer. While in the Navy, he served during campaigns in Micronesia, New Hebrides, the Solomon Islands and Okinawa. He returned to Adams after receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy.
He also lived in Albuquerque, N.M. For 40 years he lived in Prescott, where he was employed by Southern Union Gas Co. He retired 30 years ago.
His hobbies included being a craftsman. He constructed his own home in 1961.
He was baptized at a young age and was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah, of the home in Prescott; one son, Stanley Mires and wife, Cassandra, Silver Spring, M.D.; two brothers, Gilbert Mires and wife, Corice, Adams, and Ralph Mires and wife, Oleta, Marshall, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Elaine; and one brother, Douglas Mires.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ in Hooker, Okla., with Neville Buchanan presiding.
Burial will be at the Liberal Cemetery
in Liberal under the direction of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker.
The family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the Church of Christ Fellowship Building in Hooker.
PATRICIA J. CONCANNON
HUGOTON -- Patricia June Concannon, 69, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at her home in Hugoton.
She was born Oct. 11, 1931, to Earl T. and Dorothy (Patterson) Davis, in Joplin, Mo.
She married Don Concannon Nov. 23, 1952, at the West Side Baptist Church in Topeka. He survives.
She graduated from Topeka High School in 1949. She then attended
Washburn University until her marriage.
She moved with her husband to Hugoton where she was a homemaker and an airplane pilot. She founded Patricia's, a ladies ready-to-wear shop in downtown Hugoton.
Other survivors include one daughter, Debra Traster and husband, Dave, Wichita; one son, Craig Concannon and wife, Susan, Beloit; and six grandchildren, Jessica, Kelsy, Curtis, Christina, Taylor and Tyler.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Chris Concannon; and one sister, Betty Smith.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Hugoton with the Revs. Nel Holmes and Terrill Worthington presiding.
Burial will follow at the Hugoton Cemetery
in Hugoton.
Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, and from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday, at the United Methodist Church in Hugoton.

JACK M. HOOKER
DODGE CITY -- Fred M. Hooker, 70, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Western Plains Regional Hospital in Dodge City.
He was born Nov. 23, 1930, to Ralph and Lula (Miles) Hooker in Wichita.
He married Beverley K. Huber Dec. 26, 1949, in Wichita. She survives.
He graduated from Kansas State University.
He had lived in Dodge City since 1992.
He was a cattle buyer, managed feedlots, and owned and operated motels. Prior to his death, he was a salesman for Royal Purple Oil Company.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Dodge City.
He was a volunteer for the Dodge City Senior Center and Senior Friends. He was a member of the Moose Lodge.
Other survivors include three sons, Mark Hooker and wife, Phyllis, Amarillo, Texas, Scott Hooker, Austin, Texas, and Jay Hooker and wife, Robyn, Winchester, Calif.; one daughter, Holly Rainier and husband, Adriel Heisey, Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Verna Lee Daniel and Nadean Nuckolls, both of Wichita; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Dodge City, with Mr. Larry Williams presiding.
Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery
in Dodge City.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Burkhart Funeral Chapel in Dodge City.
