Arther J. Olson, 79, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Miller Mortuary.
GILBERT WILLIAM "GIB" WILSON
MEADE -- Gilbert William "Gib" Wilson, 89, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at Meade District Hospital in Meade.
He was born Aug. 27, 1910, to Walter Howard and Maud Parthenia (Wilkins) Wilson in Denver.
He married Annie C. Black Aug. 16, 1933, in Panhandle, Texas. She died Jan. 31, 1997.
As a young boy he moved with his family to Texas where he completed grade school in Lark, Texas.
They later moved to Groom, Texas where he graduated from Groom High School.
He participated in all of the school's sporting events.
He began working for the Rock Island Railroad at age 15 during the summers. He later joined the company full time, retiring after 50 years of employment as a section foreman.
He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance and Ways Union.
He also served as a deacon, secretary and treasurer, and Sunday school teacher for the Community Church of Meade for many years.
He and his wife moved from Texas to Meade Dec. 16, 1942.
Survivors include one son, Wendell Wilson and wife, Jan, Woodward, Okla.; two daughters, Dorothy Wilson and husband, C.R., Liberal, and Charlene Largent and husband, Tom, Palestine, Texas; one brother, Herman Wilson, Amarillo, Texas; one sister, Velma Hickox, Amarillo; and eight grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Loyd Wilson and Alva Wilson.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Meade, with the Rev. Wayde Wilson presiding. Burial will follow at the Graceland Cemetery, Meade.
Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday and from 2-6 p.m. Tuesday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade.
KATHLYN JEAN ROWLEY
COTTONWOOD Ariz. -- Longtime Turpin resident Kathlyn Jean Rowley, 74, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at the home of her son, Danny Rowley, in Cottonwood.
She was born Sept. 19, 1925, to Lynne A. and Thelma (McNew) Wheeler in Turpin, Okla.
She graduated as the valedictorian of the Turpin High School class of 1943.
She worked as the office manager of the Hooker Equity Coop for 27 years. She retired in 1990 and began traveling around the United States.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her son; two sisters, Delores Woody, Portland, Texas, and Karen Lehnert, Forgan, Okla.; one brother, Kerry Lyle Wheeler, Turpin; and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, DeAnn Adelman; and one sister, Shirlene Williams.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, at the Turpin United Methodist Church, Turpin. Burial will follow at the Turpin Independent Cemetery. Remains will be cremated in Arizona before the memorial service.
BEATRIZ FLORES SANCHEZ
Johnson -- Beatriz Flores Sanchez, 79, died Friday, June 30, 2000, in Johnson.
She was born Oct. 25, 1920, to Manuel and Eusebia (Mendiola) Flores in Laredo, Texas.
She married Ernesto Sanchez March 31, 1939, in McAllan, Texas. He died in 1995.
She was a homemaker. She was a resident of Johnson since 1961.
Survivors include three sons, Guadalupe Sanchez, Arlington, Texas, Jose L. Sanchez, Walsh, Colo., and Ramon Sanchez, Pueblo, Colo.; five daughters, Antonia Sanchez and Juanita Sanchez, both of Johnson, Patsy Ramirez, Lubbock, Texas, Rosalinda Sanchez, Forgan, Okla., and Angie Castello, Newton; 33 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Domingo Sanchez; and two daughters, Eduvijes Griego and Rosario Rodriquez.
Vigil services were at 7 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Johnson.
Funeral Mass was at 2 p.m. today at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Kowal presiding.
Burial followed at the Stanton County Cemetery.
Visitation was held from 2 to until service time Sunday and today from 10 a.m. until noon at Garnand Funeral home in Johnson.
Memorials are suggested to the Stanton County Senior Center, Johnson, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.
GLADYS RODRIGUEZ
Gladys Rodriguez, 76, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at her home in Liberal.
Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Miller Mortuary.
ARTHUR J. OLSON
Arthur J. Olson, 79, Liberal, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at the Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born Jan. 10, 1921, to Oscar M. and Violet (Jackson) Olson in Liberal.
He married Hazel M. Adams Jan. 5, 1948. She died in 1998.
He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in the Aleutians Islands.
He worked in carpentry for many years and later went to work for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company. He retired in 1986.
He was a member of the South Church of God.
He also served as a Scout master and unit commissioner for many years with the Boy Scouts of America.
Survivors include three sons, Ronald Olson and Jerry Olson, both of Liberal, and Jim Olson, Turpin, Okla.; one daughter, Linda Saucedo, Moscow; one brother, Oscar Olson Jr., Liberal; and five sisters, Kathryn Wyche, Guymon, Okla., Elsie Whetstone, Vallas, Colo., Rachel Harvil, San Jacinto, Calif., Marlene Jepson, Leavenworth, and Ethyl Nance, Nixon, Texas.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, three daughters and one grandson.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the South Church of God in Liberal. Burial will follow at the Liberal Cemetery
with military honors performed by an honor guard unit from Fort Riley.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Thursday at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.
Memorials are suggested to Boy Scout Troop No. 181 or to the Faith Tabernacle Youth Group, in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln Ave., Liberal, KS 67905.
MARION L. YOUNGGREN
COUNCIL GROVE -- Marion Leroy Younggren, 74, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at the Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka.
He was born Sept. 11, 1925, to Hugo and Lena (Malone) Younggren on his family's homestead northwest of Hugoton.
He married Vera Jean Litke April 11, 1948. She survives.
He graduated from Hugoton High School before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1943. After boot camp in Idaho, he received radar training at Virginia Beach before becoming a part of an LST crew serving in the Mediterranean and along the coasts of Italy and Africa. He spent two years with Flotilla 1 Group 3 staff during World War II. He was discharged in May 1946.
He and his wife had a dairy and farmed northeast of Council Grove
He worked as an electrician in oil fields throughout Kansas with Dooley Central Oilfield. He worked as a lineman with the RECA and retired from maintenance at IBP in 1988.
He was well-known at the baseball fields for his score keeping and strong opinions. He enjoyed watching grandchildren with their rodeo and 4-H activities.
Other survivors include four daughters, Nancy Zirkel and husband, Louis, and Carolyn Andres and husband, David, all of Council Grove, Sherry Wilson and husband, Bill, Cottonwood Falls, and Pam Prather and husband, Ray, Emporia; two brothers, Oscar Younggren and wife Jean, Redfield, and David Younggren and wife, Ethel, Midland, Texas; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, George Lawrence Younggren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Kendall Funeral Chapel in Council Grove, with the Revs. John Bliss and Duane Muncy presiding.
Burial, with military honors, will follow at the Sunny Slope Memorial Gardens in Council Grove.
Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Kendall Funeral Chapel in Council Grove.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Morris County 4-H Foundation or to the Paula Wilson Medical Expense Fund.
CHARLES L. MILES
Charles Lee Miles, 72, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at his home in Liberal, following a sudden illness.
He was born Nov. 5, 1927, to Charles L. and Cassie (Bruce) Miles in Pleasant Hill, La.
He worked in the oil industry from the age of 18 until his retirement several years ago. The past 17 years he was employed by Wakefield Production in Liberal.
Survivors include one son, Charles E. Miles, Wichita; one daughter, Glenda L. Cooper, Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandchildren, Angela Meigs, and Jason S. Cooper, both of Shawnee, Charles N. Miles, Wichita; and one great-granddaughter, Taylor Miles.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Yancey.
Graveside services are pending at the Great Bend Cemetery
in Great Bend and will be announced at a later date.
Miller Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements.
RALPH C. SMITH
SUBLETTE -- Ralph Clarence Smith, Turpin, Okla., and former Sublette resident, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita.
Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.
