ELDA BECKER DIRKS
MONTEZUMA -- Elda Becker Dirks, 95, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma.
She was born Nov. 19, 1904, to Henry A. P. and Lena (Koehn) Becker in Galva.
She married Edwin Dirks July 26, 1925, in Galva. He died March 30, 1993.
She and her husband moved to Montezuma in 1925 from Galva. She was a homemaker and cooked at the Montezuma Grade School in Montezuma for several years.
She was a member of the Church Of God In Christ Mennonite in Montezuma.
Survivors include one son, Russell Dirks and wife, Opal, Montezuma; four daughters, Wanetta Parks and husband, Raymond, Johnson, Joan Ensz and husband, Raymond, Iroquois, S.D., Gloria Koehn and husband, Wayne, Ulysses, and Clarabel Penner and husband, Abe, Iroquois; one brother, Roy Becker and wife, Dorothy, Moundridge; and 20 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Dan, Harry and Emil Becker; four sisters, Matilda, Ida, Della and Sophia; one infant daughter; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the Church Of God In Christ Mennonite in Montezuma with the Revs. Edwin Classen, Harold Koehn and Donald Koehn presiding.
Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at the Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma.

EARL DEAN HEADRICK
KISMET -- Earl Dean Headrick, 75, died Monday Jan. 3, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Dec. 25, 1924, to Clyde and Nell (Hall) Headrick in Liberal.
He married Verna Jantzen Aug. 17, 1947, in Kismet. She survives.
He was a lifetime resident of the Kismet area where he farmed until his health would no longer permit him.
He was a member of the Kismet United Methodist Church and served on many board positions at the church.
He served on the CMS Electric Cooperative Board, the Plains and Kismet Credit Union Board, the ASCS Board, and the Kismet School Board, which later became USD #483, all in Kismet.
He was a member of the Kismet Lions Club and was a Seward County Commissioner.
He enjoyed farming, singing, fishing and gardening. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Other survivors include three sons, Darrell Headrick, Jeff and wife, Liz Headrick, all of Kismet, and Dan Headrick and wife, Anita, Hot Springs, Ark; one daughter, Connie Green, Garden City; one sister, Beverly Malin, Liberal; eight grandchildren, Aaron Andrew Green, Angela McKenna, Nathan, Jessica, Amie, Casie and Emily Headrick; and two great-grandchildren, Austin and Chistianan Mc Kanna.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Kismet United Methodist Church in Kismet with the Rev. Vernon Maelzer presiding. Burial will follow at the Kismet Cemetery
in Kismet.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Kitch Funeral Home in Liberal.

ETHEL KIDDOO
MESA, Ariz. -- Ethel Kiddoo, 88, a former Kismet resident, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, in Mesa.
She was born July 30, 1911, to John H. and Irma (Barnes) Schaller in Waterville, Ohio.
She married Alva R. Kiddoo April 21, 1933. He survives.
She visited relatives in Kismet in 1931 and became a resident after her marriage in 1933. She and her husband moved to Arizona in 1987 from Kismet. She was living in Apache, Ariz. at the time of her death.
She was a homemaker. She graduated from high school in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended business college in Toledo, Ohio.
She was a member of the Liberal Chapter No. 104, Order of the Eastern Star.
Other survivors include two sons, Gordon Kiddoo and wife, Dianne, Dallas, and Charles Norman Kiddoo and wife, Winnie, Henderson, Nev.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Kitch Funeral Home Chapel in Liberal, with the Rev. Walter Brant presiding. Burial will follow at the Liberal Cemetery
in Liberal.
Friends may call at Kitch Funeral Home from 4 until 9 p.m. Wednesday. The family will receive visitors from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

THELMA D. STEPHENS
LIBERAL -- Thelma D. Stephens, 99, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
She was born Jan. 16, 1900 to Brice and Della (Hitch) Keating in Liberal.
She married Earnest V. Stephens in May 1928 in Liberal. He died in May 1948.
She was a resident of Liberal for almost 100 years. She was a retired school teacher, teaching in Liberal and other area schools.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Circle Eight of the church, the Kansas and Seward County retired Teacher's Association and Delta Kappa Gama, all of Liberal.
Survivors include one brother, Charles E. Keating, Hemet, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Mary B. Stephens, Torrance, Calif.; three grandchildren, Cathy Stephens, Kirk Stephens, Craig Stephens and wife, Kim; and one great-grandchild, Laura Stephens.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Charles W. Stephens; two brothers, Arthur and James B. Keating; and one sister, Mary Keating.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Liberal, with the Revs. Mike Keating and Phil Shull presiding.
Friends may call until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Friday at Kitch Funeral Home in Liberal.

JOYCE A. BEZONA
Johnson -- Joyce A. (Morris) Bezona, 61, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at the Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson.
She was born Feb. 24, 1938, to Clarence Edward and Hazel Blanche (Amen) Morris in Johnson.
She married Richard E. "Dick" Bezona March 31, 1956, in Clayton, N.M. He died Sept. 3, 1997.
She was a former resident of Buena Vista, Colo., and Syracuse.
She was a homemaker and had worked as a cook, a CMA at Stanton County Hospital and Long Term Care Unit and the Hamilton County Long Term Care Unit. She was a member of TOPS.
Survivors include her mother of Johnson; two sons, Ed Bezona and wife, Janeen (Lohoff), Manter, and Blake Bezona and wife, Krista (Nairn), Johnson; one daughter, Debbie Herron and husband, Curtis, Manter; two brothers, Clarence "Ark" Morris Jr., and Mearl Morris, both of Johnson; two sisters, Betty Barber, Johnson, and Judy Figgins, Ulysses; seven grandchildren, Jessica and Breanna Bezona, Manter, Tyler and Malea Bezona, Johnson, and Chad, Jammi and Leslie Herron, Manter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Johnson, with the Rev. Charles Rowley presiding. Burial will follow at the Syracuse Cemetery
in Syracuse.

ELDA E. MEHL
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Elda Elizabeth Mehl, 79, a former Liberal resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000.
She was born March 16, 1920, to Pierre Collie and Bertha (Francisco) Egbert on a ranch four miles west of Cimarron.
She married Otto J. Mehl in August 1941. He survives.
She attended grade school and high school in Ingalls, graduating in 1936. She entered nurses training at St. Anthony's School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in 1940.
She worked at Epworth Hospital in Liberal for several years. She worked as an office manager for Mehl Concrete Co. Inc., where her husband worked for 27 years in the concrete construction and ready-mixed concrete business. She and her husband sold the business in 1972.
She and her family moved to a farm west of Liberal in 1973, where they were engaged in farming and livestock operations. She and her husband moved to Grand Island in 1995.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Liberal and a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Grand Island. She was active in mission work of all kinds, as long as her health permitted.
She was a Sunday school teacher. Her hobbies included oil painting, making quilts and china painting.
Other survivors include two sons, Earl Mehl, Brunswick, Ga., and Gary Mehl, Grand Island; one brother, Earl Egbert, Grand Junction, Colo.; and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, Ray, Buford, Ora, Merle, Gilbert and one infant brother; and one granddaughter, Lori Dawn.
Memorial funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Liberal, with the Revs. Curt Holzworth and David Bagwell presiding. A private burial service will follow at the Balko Mennonite Brethren Church in Balko, Okla.
Friends may call at the Kitch Funeral Home in Liberal from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday and
from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday. The family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

MILDRED E. HILLEGAS
FOWLER -- Mildred E. Hillegas, 93, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at the Minneola Nursing Home in Minneola.
She was July 5, 1906, to Samuel and Floy B. Tucker in Ford County.
She married A. Clyde Hillegas March 4, 1950, in Sellersville, Penn. He died Nov. 27, 1990.
She graduated from Fowler High High School in 1923.
She had returned to Fowler to live in 1975. She was a homemaker. She was a retired slipcover seamstress, co-owning a slipcovering business with her husband.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge, both in Fowler.
Survivors include one daughter, Patsy Farage and husband, Ralph, Lompoc, Calif.; one stepson, Ronald Hillegas, Bloomfield, N.J.; two stepdaughters, Shirley Westhafer, Mechanicsburg, Penn., and Sandra Hillegas, Casper, Wyo.; four grandchildren, Michael Farage, Visalia, Calif., Vicki Holtcamp, West Lenn, Ore., Janette Haefner and Gary Farage, both of Lompoc; seven great-grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, seven step great-grandchildren and four step great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Fowler United Methodist Church in Fowler with the Rev. Juanita Catlin presiding. Burial will follow at the Fowler Cemetery
in Fowler.
Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. Sunday at the Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.
