Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, at Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ, 745 Walker Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery.

James “Jim” Charles Tillisch
James “Jim” Charles Tillisch, 68, died in Joplin, Mo., on March 1, 2006. Formerly of Kansas City, Kan., he lived in Grove, Okla.
Memorial services to honor Jim were held March 3 in Grove, Okla., and March 6 in Kansas City, Kan. A memorial site will be at Highland Park Cemetery

Louis E. Bruns
Louis Edward Bruns, 82, of Kansas City, Kan., passed away in the early morning hours of April 1, 2006, at Olathe Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Broadview and Reynolds, in Kansas City, Kan. Louie will lie in state from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The family has requested that memorial contributions be donated to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church or the Optimist International Foundation.
Gerald Julius Espe
Gerald Julius Espe, 77, of Kansas City, Kan., passed away March 31, 2006, at his home. He was born May 11, 1928, in White Earth Indian Reservation, Minnesota, the son of Eddie and Alice Vizenor Espe. He was a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe.
Gerald served from 1955 to 1957 in the United States Army in Korea. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. He was a 40-year member of Union Operating Engineers Local 101 and worked with several construction firms. Gerald married Viola McClintock on Nov. 23, 1958, in Pawnee City, Neb. Two children were born to this union, Darrell and Duane.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Viola; sons, Darrell and wife Shirley of Pawnee City, Neb., and Duane of Kansas City, Kan.; two nieces who were reared by Gerald and Viola, Cindy Brown of Kansas City, Kan., and Sonya McClintock, Falls City, Neb.; one sister, Grace Haaland of Twin Valley, Minn.; five brothers-in-law; six grandchildren, three boys and three girls; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers-in-law.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, at Meyers Family Funeral Home, 6300 Parallel Parkway, KCK, where friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday. Burial Pawnee City Cemetery, Pawnee City, Neb., 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 5. Memorial contributions may be made to the family for the charity of their choice.

Von K. Glover, 47, of Kansas City, Kan., died March 31, 2006, at his home. Funeral services will held at Little Union Baptist Church, Shreveport, La., with burial in Lincoln Cemetery
in Shreveport.
Mr. Glover was a mechanic for MTSI. He leaves his mother, Jewelie Glover, KCK, and daughter, Jomeke Ford, Shreveport, La.

Ethelyn M. McNair, 96, of Kansas City, Kan., died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at her home.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, at First Baptist Church, 2900 Minnesota Ave., KCK. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Robert (Bob) L. Taylor
Bob Taylor, Kansas City, Kan., passed away at Shawnee Mission Hospital Sunday, April 2, 2006. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 5, from 4-6 p.m. at Meyers Family Funeral Home, 6300 Parallel Ave., Kansas City, Kan., followed by an informal dinner celebration at R&J BBQ, 8401 Parallel Ave., Kansas City, Kan.
Born July 5, 1952, in KCK, graduated from Wyandotte H.S., he was proud to serve as a Marine from 1970 to 1978. He married Callie Corbin 1970. He worked for BNSF RR as a machinist from 1979 to the present. He married Marsha Super1980. He was a member of the Piper Booster Club and spotter for the Piper HS football team for six years. He was a proud father of three sons and two grandchildren. An avid motorcyle rider, you could routinely find Bob riding his Harley-Davidson out in western Wyandotte County with his friends Ron and Mike; the rumble of his Harley followed by a blaring radio were his calling cards. Bob enjoyed cooking and grilling for his sons and their friends. Quiet and unassuming, and yet a proud Marine, you could easily elicit an entertaining reaction by asking him, “What did you do in the Army?”
Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Irene, and leaves behind his wife Marsha; sons, Jason Robert, Omaha, Neb., Kirk David, KCK, and LCPL USMC Keith Michael, stationed in Quantico, Va.; father, William H., and brother, Clyde D., both of Nevada; sister, Ruth E., KCK; grandchildren, Erica and Jacob of Omaha, Neb.; and his two dogs, Psycho (crazy) and Sadie. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Piper Adult Booster Club, care of Piper HS, 4400 N. 107th, KCK 66109 or the charity of your choice. We would like to thank all of our friends and family for the prayers and support in our time of crisis.
James “Jim” William Valentine
James “Jim” William Valentine, 53, of Dixon, Mo., died Saturday, April 1, 2006, in the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital, Fort Leonard Wood. He was born Oct. 2, 1952, in Kansas City, Kan., a son of Roland Douglas and Jeanne Marie Stephenson Valentine.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, in the Dixon Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday and 9-10 a.m. Wednesday in the Dixon Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Robert “Bobby” H. Wiley, 40, of Leavenworth, Kan., passed away Saturday, April 1, 2006, at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Lester W. Herdman
Lester “Lucky” W. Herdman, age 86 of the Piper area of Kansas City, Kan., passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at his home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 14 at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery

Lester was born on Dec. 21, 1919, in the Stranger Township of Leavenworth County which would be near the town of Tonganoxie today. He was a longtime member and Deacon of the Piper Baptist Church. He had served as a board member of the Piper School Board. He retired from the Kansas City Missouri Gas Service after 43 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and had served in the Pacific theater, and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and an over 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge. Lester was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Esther (Diehl) Herdman in 2001. He was also preceded in death by his siblings Evelyn, Jess, Raymond, Frank, Richard, and Henry. Survivors include two sons Bruce W. Herdman and wife Barbara of Urbana, Mo., Kenneth Lee Herdman and his wife Delores of Tonganoxie, Kan., two daughters Carolyn M. Skinner and husband Melvin of Nocona, Texas, and Elizabeth “Beth” N. Eddings of Versailles, Mo., one sister Ruby Jaccard and husband L.D. of Stockton, Mo., two brothers Orval Herdman and wife LaVon of Piper, Kan., Eugene Herdman and wife Roberta of Kansas City, Kan., 13 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.

“Kay” Barton, 92, of De Soto, Kan., passed away Thursday, April 6, 2006, at the Hillside Village Nursing Home in De Soto.
Graveside funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Bonner Springs Cemetery. A visitation will be at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home, Bonner Springs, from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. prior to the service.

On April 7, 2006, Clifford A. Brown, 87, formerly of Kansas City, Kan., journeyed to Heaven to join the Lord.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 10, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Shawnee Mission, Kan. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Maple Hill Funeral Home. Elton R. Fevurly, 95, of Leavenworth, Kan., passed away Thursday, April 6, 2006, at the Parkway Care Home in Edwardsville, Kan.
A visitation will be held Sunday, April 9, from 6-8 p.m. at the Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral Chapel, 500 Oak St., Leavenworth, (913) 682-1614. Friends may call after 4 p.m. A service will be held at the funeral home Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Jesse “Chui” Oropeza
Jesse “Chui” Oropeza, 63, of Kansas City, Kan., died peacefully April 6, 2006, at his home. He was a loving father and grandfather to his family. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 11, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 2910 Strong Ave., KCK. Burial in Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Maple Hill Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.
Chui was born Oct. 19, 1942, in Kansas City, Kan. He graduated from Argentine High School and lived in Argentine all of his life. Chui worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 37 years as a carman before retiring. He also worked as a waiter for several years at the Kansas City Club and for Hyatt Regency Hotels.
Chui was preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Elvira Oropeza, and his sister, MaryAnn Kurihara. He is survived by his ex-wife, Lupe Escareno Oropeza of KCK; two sons, Jesse Anthony Oropeza of Overland Park and Andrew Louis Oropeza of KCK; two daughters, Paula Sanchez and husband Anthony Sr. of Shawnee, Kan., and Elvira Rene Oropeza of KCK; and one sister, Pauline Avila and brother-in-law Frank Robleado of KCK. Chui had eight grandchildren whom he loved very much, Marissa Sanchez, Mariah Sanchez, Anthony Sanchez Jr., Vanessa Andrea Oropeza, Frankie Oropeza, Jesse Alexander Oropeza and Alice Grace Oropeza. He is also survived by three nieces, one nephew and two great-nephews. “We will all miss our Papa. We will always love you.”

Lynetha H. Cole, 55, of Kansas City, Kan., died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at KU Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 22, at Bethel Baptist Church, KCK, with visitation from 9-11 a.m. at the church. Cremation.
Hazel Owens Hawks
Hazel Owens Hawks, 93, of Lenexa, Kan., died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Villa St. Francis. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22, at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, Kan., where friends may call from 9-10 a.m. Saturday. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Holton Cemetery, Holton, Kan. The family suggests memorial contributions to Villa St. Francis or the Retired Teachers Endowment at Kansas City Kansas Community College.
Hazel was born Oct. 23, 1912, in Wattensaw, Ark., and had lived most of her life in the Kansas City area. She was a 1935 graduate of the University of Central Arkansas with a degree in education and received a Masters in Guidance Counseling from the University of Kansas. She began her teaching career as a math teacher and basketball coach at the Camden Arkansas High School and then was a teacher and guidance counselor at Northwest Junior High School and a guidance counselor at Coronado Junior High School in Kansas City, Kan., retiring in 1975. She was a member of Overland Park Christian Church, the University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, P.E.O., Chapter EL, Friends of the Library, Friends of the Grinter House, Presbyterian Manor, Ladies Auxiliary, a volunteer at Providence Medical Center, did tax counseling for the A.A.R.P. and participated in the Senior Olympics. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Hawks, Sr., in 1995. Survivors include a son, George Hawks, Jr., and wife, Linda, Southlake, Texas, daughter, Margaret Klein and husband David, Lenexa, Kan., grandchildren, Katherine Rose and Jay Cloud, Nashville, Tenn., Dr. Wendy Alison and Dr. Stephen Kindrick, Grapevine, Texas, Michael David and Alisha Klein, Olathe, Kan., Travis Charles and Amy Hawks, Fort Worth, Texas, great grandchildren, Emma Katherine Cloud, James William Kindrick, Nathan Thomas Hawks, Avery Elizabeth Cloud and Alex Michael Klein and a sister, Christine Cross, Birmingham, Mich. Orva Elton Higgins
Orva Elton Higgins, 86, of Kansas City, KS, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at Providence Medical Center. Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, April 21, at the Armourdale Baptist Church with burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 12-1 P.M. Friday at the church. Orva was born May 23, 1919, in Deepwater, MO. He was a trim repairman for General Motors for 30 years, retiring in 1976. He served as a Technical Sergeant in the Army during WWII from May 1942-December 1945. He was a member of the Armourdale Baptist Church and had been a custodian for the church for 24 years. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Higgins. Orva is survived by his wife, Madge L. Higgins; daughter, Linda Millholland and husband Frank; sons, Ronnie Higgins and wife Leanna; Bill Higgins and wife Karla; 10 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
