Darryl E. Carpenter

Darryl E. Carpenter, 40, Kansas City, Kan., died Sept. 24, 2002, at KU Medical Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the New Hope Full Gospel. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. Cremation.

He was born June 13, 1962, in KCK.

Survivors include his wife, Benita Carpenter, Carrollton, Texas; his mother Joyce Carpenter, KCK; two sons, Vincent Kellogg and Michael Kellogg, both of KCK; two daughters, Brytne Carpenter and Corean Carpenter, both of Carrollton; and two sisters, Joyce Harrell, Couthrie, Okla., and Andrea Carpenter, KCK.

F. Willene Curphy

F. Willene Curphy, 84, passed away Sept. 17, 2002, at Providence Medical Center. At her request, there were no public services. The gravesite is at Westlawn Gardens in Topeka, Kan.

She was born Frances Willene Welch in Rome, Ga., on May 8, 1918, in Larkin & Bessie (Payne) Welch. Willene was a 1935 graduate of Rome High School and married Dean Curphy in 1951, in Miami.

Her son and daughter-in-law, Cary Curphy and Barbara Holder, Kansas City, Kan., survive her at the family residence.

Marian G. Dropkin

Marian G. Dropkin, 66, Riverside, Mo., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at North Kansas City Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Meyers Family Funeral Home. Friends may call at 10 a.m. Monday until service time.

She is survived by five daughters, Jennifer Dropkin, Washington, D.C., Loren Winters, Stilwell, Kan., Regina Anderson, Lawrence, Kan., Elizabeth Smythe, Baldwin, Kan., Sara Lynch, Raytown, Mo.; one son, David Dropkin, Leavenworth, Kan.; four grandchildren, Christopher Dropkin, Katie Lynch, Jake Winters and Brandon Smythe.

The family requests no flowers and suggests memorial contributions to the Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society Inc., 743 Cherokee, Leavenworth, KS 66048.

Louis N. Grenovich

Louis N. Grenovich, 77, Kansas City, Kan., passed away Saturday, Sept., 21, 2002, at his home. Graveside services were be 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Skradski Funeral Home.

Mr. Grenovich was born in KCK on May 25, 1925, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a self-employed auto parts supplier. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and a member of the Elks. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by his friend and companion, Tia Boyce, in 2001.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Lewis, Sarasota, Fla., and Sandra K. Ellis, Independence, Mo.; two sons, David Grenovich, of the home, and Mark Grenovich, Topeka, Kan.; one sister, Helen Hahn, Mission, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Bernice Wardlow Jones

Bernice Wardlow Jones, 85, Kansas City, Kan., died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at the John Knox Care Center in Lee's Summit, Mo. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be sent to London Heights Baptist Church.

Bernice was born Nov. 11, 1916, in Rae, Mo., to Walter and Cecil Griggs Wardlow. She moved to Kansas City in late 1916. She was a member of the London Heights Baptist Church for over 70 years and served in Week Day Church School for more than 40 years. She dedicated her life to Jesus Christ and touched many live with her generosity and love. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon (Van) E. Jones.

She is survived by two sisters, Imo Wardlow, Flagstaff, Ariz., Jeane Hecker, Hot Springs, Ark.; one son; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many friends.

Daniel Joseph Reardon

Daniel Joseph Reardon, 60, Kansas City, Kan., died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at his home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at the Porter Funeral Home. Burial in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Friends may call 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to The American Heart Association, United Cerebral Palsy or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Daniel was born Sept. 13, 1942, in KCK. He worked for Security Bank for 25 years and later owned and operated Dan's Clock Clinic since 1986. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Daniel is survived by his wife, Faye Reardon, of the home; two sons, David Reardon and wife Lisa, Olathe, Kan., John Reardon and wife Lisa, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one daughter, Brenda Reardon, KCK; three grandchildren, Ashley, Jessica and Nicholas.

Herbert L. Sandberg

Herbert L. Sandberg, 89, Lee's Summit, Mo., formerly of Prairie Village, Kan., died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at the John Knox Village Care Center. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Cremation.

Herbert was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Dickinson County, Kan. He was an electrician for the Bendix Corp. for 13 years, retiring in 1977. He served in the U.S. Army Corp during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, June Sandburg, and one brother, Harold Sandberg.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda Liberatore, Cerritos, Calif.; one brother, George Sandberg, Greeley, Colo.; two sisters, Leota Huff, London, Ky., and Arline Block, Salina, Kan.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Sharon Vanoy

Sharon Vanoy, 51, Kansas City, Kan., died Sept. 18, 2002, at KU Medical Center. Services were 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at Greystone Heights MBC. Visitation was be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Thatchers Funeral Home, and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, at the church. Burial at Maple Hill Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 20, 1951, in KCK. She was a licensed practical nurse and medical records director. She was a member of Greystone Heights Missionary Baptist Church and a choir member.

Survivors include one son, Justin Vanoy, KCK; her parents, Reva and William Vanoy, KCK; two sisters, Yuonne Vanoy and Mitzi Vanoy, both of KCK; and two brothels, William Vanoy Jr., and Roy Vanoy, both of KCK.

Margaret Akers Wise

Margaret Akers Wise died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Providence Medical Center, following complications of a 2 1/2-year illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at the Cathedral of St. Peter, 14th Street and Sandusky Avenue. Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at the Joseph A. Butler & Son Funeral Home, 19th Street and Minnesota Avenue, where the Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the University of Kansas Medical Center Department of Neurology for Stroke Research, 3901 Rainbow Blvd., KS 66160, or to St. Peter's Cathedral, 409 N. 15th St., KCK 66102.

Mrs. Wise was born on Aug. 29, 1923, to Homer and Irene Akers in KCK. She was a 1941 graduate of Wyandotte High School. During World War II, Mrs. Wise was employed in clerical work at Armour & Co. She was united in marriage on May 29, 1947, to Joseph Edward Wise Jr. For 15 years, she was employed as a receptionist for Drs. Clifford Mullen, Sr. and Jr. Mrs. Wise was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Irene Akers, her father- and mother-in-law, Joseph A. Wise Sr., and Bertha K. Wise, and her daughter-in-law, Carol Dunn Wise.

Mrs. Wise is survived by her husband, Joseph Edward Wise Jr., of the home; one daughter, Marlene Marie Braunsdorf and her husband, Richard, KCK; two sons, Joseph Edward Wise III, KCK, and William Thomas Wise, Boston; two sisters, Irene Lynch and Ruthann Batliner, both of KCK; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Braunsdorf and John Braunsdorf; and step-grandchildren, Joseph and Devon Rizk.

Lonnie L. Smith

Lonnie L. Smith, 72, Roeland Park, Kan., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at his home with his family. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at the Roeland Park United Methodist Church, 5110 Cedar, Roeland Park, Kan. Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Skradski Funeral Home. The family requests no flowers and suggests memorial contributions to the church building fund.

Lonnie was born Feb. 8, 1930, in Kansas City, Kan., to Harold M. (Smitty) and Leona M. (Sliffe) Smith. He had been employed as the outboard motor mechanic at Smitty's Boat and Motor Co. in the Armourdale district of KCK from 1942, until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the Roeland Park United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Ellen (Seaman) Smith; two sons, Michael Paul Smith, and Patrick Lee and wife Mindy A. Smith; two cherished granddaughters, Amber lee Smith and Abbey Lee Smith; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold L. (Roy) and Rita Smith, and Donald D. and Carolyn Smith; his mother-in-law, Mayme Seaman; his sister-in-law, Leona C. Seaman; and his faithful companion pet, Midget.

The casketbearers included Michael Paul Smith, Patrick Lee Smith, Larry R. Waltman, J. Lloyd Williams, Marvin Gish and Rudy Pinter.

His ever-present strength, compassion and humility will be our example and guide us through the difficult times ahead. For now, our consolation is that he "sees" us all, as we are ... and always have been.

Norma Loyce Watkins

Norma Loyce Watkins, 73, Parkville, Mo., and formerly of Kansas City, Kan., died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002 at the North Kansas City Hospital. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at Heritage Funeral Home. Cremation. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be sent to Cancer Action.

She was born Nov. 26, 1929, in Bonner Springs.

Survivors include six children.

Cecile Laird

Ceile Laird, 77, passed away Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, t the Presbyterian Manor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's, before Mass. The family suggests memorials to Catholic Charities Hospice, 2220 Central Ave., KCK 66102.

Mrs. Laird was born in KCK and was a lifelong resident. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church and was retired from the Certain-Teed Corp.

Mrs. Laird was preceded in death by her husband, Fred E. Laird, on July 1, 1998. She leaves two sons, David Laird, Kansas City, Mo., and Bob Laird, Shawnee, Kan.; one brother, Jim Smith, Overland Park, Kan.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Sister Joan Allard

Sister Joan Allard, 85, died April 7, 2003, at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, Kan. A vigil will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9 in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House, Leavenworth, where friends may call after 4 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10 in the chapel. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds. Contributions may be made to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 S. Fourth St., Leavenworth, KS 66048.

Virginia Allard was born Nov. 23, 1917, in Billings, Mont.

Survivors include nephews, nieces and cousins.

George C. Conklin

George C. Conklin, 83, Olathe, Kan., died Monday, April 7, 2003, at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Olathe. Burial will be in Leavenworth National Cemetery. Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Joseph A. Butler & Son, where a prayer service will be at 6 p.m.

Mr. Conklin was born in KCK.

He leaves his daughter, Judy Kellner.

Don A. Graves

The Rev. Don Adrian Graves passed away in his sleep on April 13, 2003. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 11 at the Amos Family Funeral Home, Shawnee, Kan. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 10.

He was born on March 15, 1913, in Ashdown, Ark., the youngest of three children of Othello Thomas and Addie Crowson Graves. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Beth Graves, brother Guy Crowson Graves and sister Marion Graves Walker.

He is survived by one son, Harold L. Glowers, and one grandson Darrel L. Flowers, both of La Grange, Ky.; one niece Kathleen Young, Foreman, Ark.; two nephews, Dr. Tom Graves, Summer, Texas, and David Walker, Foreman.

He served in the Army in the European theater during World War II. He was active in writing and working on several different newspapers and writing several Christian books throughout his lifetime.

He was granted a master's degree in theology in 1954 from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in KCK. He received his certificate of ordination into the gospel ministry in January 1967 and is the former pastor of the Faith Bible Church in Kansas City, Mo. After retirement from the U.S. Postal Service in 1984, Mr. Graves was active with the 700 Club as a phone counselor, a weekly contribution to the Kansas City Call newspaper, writing the column "People are always asking" and playing the bass fiddle in the "Sounds of Joy."

L. Dale Hefton

L. Dale Hefton, 82, Bonner Springs, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at his home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 11 at the Porter Funeral Home. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Grandview Baptist Church.

Dale was born Jan. 16, 1921, in Brush Creek, Mo. He was a carpenter with the Local Union No. 168 and was owner of Hefton's Handsome Homes. He was a member of Wyandotte Masonic Lodge No. 3 and the Abdallah Shrine. He was preceded in death by one son, Patrick.

Dale is survive by his wife, of 61 years, Dahlia Hefton, of the home; two sons, Michael Hefton and wife Gayle, Kelly Hefton and wife Patty; one daughter, Joni Rankin and husband Charles; one brother, Hubert Hefton and wife Jean; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was the world's best husband, dad and grandfather.

Rosa L. Porras

Rosa L. Porras, 78, Kansas City, Kan., died April 6m, 2003, at her home. Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 11 at the First Mexican Baptist church of the Westside, 801 Cesar Chavez Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. Burial will be in the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Highland Park Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the church's building fund.

Mrs. Porras was born June 6, 1924, in Fairbury, Neb. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include her husband Benito L. Porras Sr.; two sons, Benito L. Porras Jr., and Richard Porras, of KCK; two daughters, Rosalie Corral and Shelly Jones, all of KCK; one sister, Pearl Cole, Marietta, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
