Warren H. Gille Jr.
Graveside services for Warren H. Gille Jr., 54., Creve Coeur, Mo., formerly of Prairie Village, Kan., will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Highland Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Kan.
The family suggests memorials to the Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. The Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, Kan., 66215 is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gille died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at the home. He was born Sept. 23, 1946, in Oak Park, Ill., lived in Prairie Village for 10 years, and the St. Louis area for the past 30 years. He was an economist for 20 years with the Department of Defense in St. Louis before retiring in 1995. He was a 1964 graduate of Shawnee Mission East High School and a member of its cross-country team. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Missouri - Kansas City; and a master's in economics from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was a graduate assistant.
His father, Warren H. Gille, died in 1992.
Surviving are his mother, Lucile Gille, Overland Park, Kan.; four sisters, Frances Morse, Tulsa, Okla., Margaret Gille, Overland Park, Rachel Gille, Denver, Colo., and Judith Gille, Seattle, Wash.; one brother, Brian Gille, New Orleans, La.; six nephews; and four nieces.
Thelma Lewis
Services for Thelma Lewis, 74, Kansas City, Kan., will be at noon Tuesday at the Eighth Street Baptist Church.
Burial will be in the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the church. The Thatcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Lewis died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Providence Medical Center. She was born Jan. 2, 1926, in Camden, Ark.
Surviving are her husband, Eddie Lewis Jr., of the home; two sons, Vernon Johnson Jr., Kansas City, Mo., and Damon Lewis, KCK; three sisters, Florence Moore, Kansas City, Mo., Ida M. Penigar and Fred Burks, both of Arkansas; an aunt, Aunt Queen Esther Jones, Arkansas; 25 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Lawrence E. Macan Sr.
A Funeral Liturgy for Lawrence Eugene Macan Sr., 70, Kansas City, Kan., will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Christ the King Catholic Church.
Burial will be in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave., KCK., where the rosary will be said at 7 p.m. The family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Association.
Mr. Macan died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at the Tonganoxie Nursing Center. He was born Oct. 16, 1930, in KCK, and was a lifelong resident. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. He worked at Procter and Gamble for 20 years, retiring in 1969. He had been the owner and operator of The Doghouse I and II Private Clubs.
His wife, Elizabeth H. Macan, died in 1996, and his father, George M. Macan, died in 1971.
Surviving are five sons, Larry E. Macan Jr., Olathe, Kan., Timothy M. Macan, Christopher D. Macan and George W. Macan, all of KCK, and James J. Macan, Overland Park, Kan.; two daughters, Donna L. Sheriff, Liberty, Mo., and Tina E. Greenbaum, Mission, Kan.; his mother, Rosemary Gates, KCK; one brother, Frank Macan, Shawnee, Kan.; 22 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Wendell Q. Neal
Services for Wendell Q. "Norm" Neal, 80, Kansas City, Kan. will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Mount Zion Baptist Church, KCK.
Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Coffeyville, Kan. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The Mrs. J.W. Jones Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Neal died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2000, at the Medicalodge North. He was born June 17, 1920, in Coffeyville, Kan. He was the owner/operator of Norm's Tire Shop. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, and was an Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Norma J. Neal, of the home; one son, Columbus W. Neal, Kansas City, Mo.; one step-son, Terry Williams, KCK; one daughter, Lucrecie Bell, Leawood, Kan.; one step-daughter, Wendy Williams.; one brother, George Neal, Coffeyville; two sisters, Louise Neal, Coffeyville, and Catherine Curry, Kirkwood, Mo.; five grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
William L. Patton
Services for William L. Patton, 78, Kansas City, Kan., will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First A.M.E. Church, 1111 N. 8th St., KCK.
Internment will be in the Wadsworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kan. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The Thatcher's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Patton died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Providence Medical Center, KCK. He was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Armstrong, Mo., and in 1929, he along with his family moved to Independence, Mo. He graduated from Young High School, Independence, Mo., and Western Bible College, Kansas City, Mo. He served as Staff Sergeant in the Army in the Pacific during World War II. He was a retired captain of the KCK Police Department. He was a former bus driver for KCK USD 500. He was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, the choir and trustee board member, and was the former president of the Lay Organization. He was a Mason and a member of the KCK Branch of the NAACP.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Georgia Goff Patton, of the home; three daughters, NedRa Bonds, KCK, Winifred Abdul-Rahim, Washington, D.C., and Candace Birdsong, Bonner Springs, Kan.; two sons, Michael Patton, Kansas City, Mo., and Cedric Patton, of the home; one brother, Benjamin Patton, KCK; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Theophalus Ridgell
Services for Theophalus Ridgell, 79, Kansas City, Kan., will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Mrs. J.W. Jones Memorial Funeral Home.
Burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Ridgell died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Bethany Medical Center. He was born April 10, 1921, in Monticello, Ark. He was a barrel inspector.
Surviving are his wife, Annie Mae Ridgell, of the home; one son, Eugene Ridgell; two daughters, Joe Anne Peterson and Bobby Ann Ridgell, all of KCK; two sisters, Ruby Gibson, Los Angeles, Calif., and Ella Drew, Monticello, Ark.; 14 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren.
Vesta B. Smith
Services for Vesta B. Smith, 92, Lenexa, Kan., will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave., KCK.
Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Smith died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Lakeview Village, Lenexa, Kan. She was born June 29, 1908, in Walker, Mo., and had lived most of her life in Columbia, Mo. area before moving to the Kansas City area in 1994. She had been the personal secretary for Walter Marriott, of the Marriott-Reed Coal Co. for more than 50 years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of the Assembly of God in Columbia, where she had served as church secretary and treasurer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Myrl Smith in 1959; two sisters, Gertrude "Dena" Ferguson and Sarah Kersten; one brother, Charles L. Ball; and one step-sister, Fanny Freeman.
Surviving are 10 nieces and nephews, Jo Ann Ball and Nadine Tanny, both of KCK, La Nelle Evans, Shreveport, La., Inda Wangerin, Louisville, Ky., Elizabeth Johnson, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Charles W. Ball Sr., Lenexa, Kan., James Beasley, Kansas City, Mo., Bill Kersten, Liberty, Mo., Don Kersten, Gladstone, Mo., and George Kersten, Quenemo, Kan.; and many great-nieces and nephews.
Rosie C. Thomas
Services for Rosie C. Thomas, 78, Roeland Park, Kan., will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Simmons Funeral Home, 1404 S. 37th St., Kansas City, Kan.
Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the National Parkinson Foundation.
Mrs. Thomas died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at the Lee's Summit Hospital, Lee's Summit, Mo. She was born July 6, 1922, in KCK. She was a member of the Women's Relief Corporation; Tri-County Art Association; the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Armourdale Baptist Church.
Her husband, Alvin R. Thomas, died in 1966, and three children, also preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, H.R. Thomas, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Jeffery Thomas, Kingsville, Mo.; one sister, Louise Sherman, Weaubleau, Mo.; one brother, James Erwin, Quincy, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandhildren.
Helen M. Wilkening
Helen M. Wilkening, 94, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of KCK, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000.
The Rosary, Mass and burial were all held in Tucson. Bring's Memorial Funeral Home, Tucson, Ariz., was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Wilkening was born April 3, 1906, in Quincy, Ill. She had been a resident of Tucson since 1956. Her late husband, Louis F. Wilkening, was a retired Kansas City Firefighter.
Surviving are four nieces, Mary Souders, Patricia Hemm, Kathy Emshoff, and Vickie Bracemonte, and many other nieces and nephews.
Dorsey L. Bruce
Services for Dorsey Lee Bruce, 101, Kansas City, Kan., will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Highland Park Funeral Home.
Burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Armourdale Baptist Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
Mr. Bruce died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Providence Place. He was born June 2, 1899, in Boone County, Mo. and had lived in KCK for the past 72 years. He was a machine operator for the former Railway Ice Co. He was a 70-year member of Armourdale Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 26 years.
His wife of 52 years, Lou Ethel Bruce; one son, Melvin Bruce; and one daughter, Caryl Bruce, all preceded him in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Evelyn Wright, of the home, and Frances Bonnett, Denver, Colo.; one sister, Ruth Durham, KCK; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
David T. Burkin Sr.
Services for David Terry Burkin Sr., 57, Kansas City, Kan., will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave., KCK.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to St. Mary's Food Kitchen.
Mr. Burkin died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the home. He was born July 24, 1943, in KCK, and was a lifelong resident. He worked at Kroeger Grocery Store and later for the Internal Revenue Service as an auditor. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
Surviving are one daughter, Jennie Burkin, Tonganoxie, Kan.; four sons, D. Scott Burkin, South Carolina, David T. Burkin Jr., KCK, Stanley Burkin and Jerald "Bobby" Burkin, both of Tonganoxie, Kan.; two brothers, Jerry Franse, KCK, and Phillip Franse, Kentucky.
Granville L. Dawson
Memorial services for Granville Lee Dawson, 88, Casper, Wyo., formerly of Kansas City, Kan., will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Highland Park Funeral Home, KCK.
Inurnment will be in the Highland Park Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the London Heights Baptist Church.
Mr. Dawson died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at the Good Shepard Nursing Center in Casper. He was born in Huntsville, Mo., and had lived in KCK most of his life, moving to Casper in 1998. He was an assistant terminal manager for Roadway Express for 20 years. He was a member of London Heights Baptist Church.
His wife, Margaret Elizabeth Dawson, died in 1988.
Surviving are one son, Kenneth Lee Dawson, Casper; two daughters, Judy Francis and Carole Sowers, both of KCK; one brother, James Earl Dawson, Brooksville, Fla.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Benjamin Garrison
Graveside services for Benjamin Garrison, 80, Kansas City, Kan., will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Mr. Garrison died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the Villa St. Francis, Olathe, Kan. He was born in Independence, Mo., and had lived in KCK for most of his life. He served in the Army during WWII and the Korean War. He worked as a bus driver for Metro Transit for 20 years, retiring in 1987.
Surviving are four daughters, Kathy Garrison, KCK, Virginia Ruth Collins, Conway, Mo., Frankie Ohler, Kansas City, Mo., and Phyllis Grady, Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Grace Daley, Nevada City, Calif., Katherine Healy, KCK, and Ruth Davis, Shawnee Mission, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
