JoAnn Nulik

JoAnn Nulik, 71, of Caldwell, died early Friday morning, December 3, 2004 at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington.

Services are pending and will be announced later by the Day Funeral Home.

Survivors include her mother Jennie A. Nulik of Wellington, and a brother Kenneth Nulik and his wife Esther Joann Nulik of Caldwell.

Arrangements by Day Funeral Home and Crematory, 24 South Main Street, Caldwell, Kansas.

Minnie H. Fitz

Minnie H. Fitz, 98, died December 4, 2004 at Conway Springs. She was born March 25 at Steinauer, Nebraska, daughter of August and Anna (Kettlehake) Fitz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, three at infancy and Louie Fitz, four sisters, Bertha Fitz, Clara Podschun, Emilie Wacker and Martha Hill.

She is survived by four nieces, Kathy Nielson of Argonia, Clarice McKay of Lamar, Mo., Elna Fitch of Clearwater, Darlene Kraus of Wichita, two nephews, Gus Hill of Redman, Wash., and Phil Wacker of Argonia.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Argonia. Interment will be at the Argonia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m., Monday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Prairie Rose Funeral Home, Williams Chapel in Anthony.

Memorials have been established with the Zion Lutheran Church.

Prairie Rose Funeral Home, Williams Chapel of Anthony is in charge of arrangements.

Vivian Jeanne Jurgens

Memorial funeral services for Vivian Jeanne Jurgens, 83, of Wellington, who died Tuesday, November 30, 2004, were held Friday, December 3, 2004 at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Day Funeral Home, Wellington.

Officiating was Charlie Jenkins. Recorded Hymns by Elvis Presley were "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."

A memorial has been established in her name and loving memory with First United Methodist Church Youth Group, 102 West Harvey, Wellington, Kansas 67152. Contributions can be mailed or left at the funeral home.

Condolences may be given to the family via the Day Funeral Home Website at www.dayfuneralhome.info.

Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home and Crematory, 1030 Mission Road, Wellington, Kansas.

John E. Oldridge

John E. Oldridge, 55, died Sunday night, December 5, 2004 at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita.

He was a life-long Wellington resident.

Services are pending and will be announced through Frank Funeral Home, which has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Emma Rosie Alvina Lewis

Emma Rosie Alvina Lewis, 100, passed away December 7, 2004 at Slate Creek Good Samaritan Center. She was born November 23, 1904 in Denison, Iowa to Carl Frederick and Alvina Paulina Blunck. Emma was the youngest of ten children. Two brothers and one sister died in infancy.

When Emma was six years old, in 1910, her parents moved the family and seven children to a farm southeast of Anson in Sumner County. She attended the schools in that area and graduated from the Anson Grade School after the eighth grade. She continued living with her parents and helping with the farming.

On January 7, 1933, Emma married Merl C. Lewis in Ponca City, Okla. Emma and Merl lived and farmed in the Anson area for approximately 34 years. Merl died June 8, 1967. Emma continued to live on the farm for several years before moving to Wellington.

Emma always enjoyed visiting with relatives, neighbors and friends; playing cards, putting together puzzles, and keeping up with the Kansas City Royals baseball team by radio in the summer. She was quite active until her health failed. She was admitted to the Slate Creek Good Samaritan Center on April 30, 1998.

Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Merl, her parents, Carl Frederick and Alvina Paulina (Riege) Blunck, her five brothers, Frederick, Carl, Herman, Gerhardt and Walter; her four sisters, Bertha, Clara, Leona and Meta; and an adopted daughter, Mildred Headley.

Survivors include her adopted son, Ellison Headley; eleven nieces, two nephews and their families.

A memorial fund has been established with the Slate Creek Good Samaritan Center in lieu of flowers.

Graveside services will be held at the Prairie Lawn Cemetery at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 11, 2004.

Friends may call at the Frank Funeral Home on Friday evening from 4 to 9 p.m.

Frank Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Vernon A. Berger

Vernon A. Berger, 79, life-long Wellington resident, died Monday, Dec. 6 at Beverly Health Care. He was a retired truck driver for Plessey Welco since 1991.

He was born July 27, 1925 in Wellington, the son of Andrew H. and Lulu Inez Ware.

He married Sharlene Abel on February 12, 1971 in Noble Co., Okla.

He was a past Commander of the V.F.W. and member of the American Legion, Sumner County Antique Tractor Association, avid bowler, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Gina Rieman.

Survivors include his spouse Sharlene of the home, son Jerry and Leota Tooman of Wellington, daughters Rebecca and Paul Ferrara of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Janice and Fred Falls of Wellington, one god child, Susan Johnson, six grandchildren, Brandi Pettegrew, Jake Tooman, Brent Falls, Jessica Falls, Jamie Newman, Jacob Rieman, two great grandchildren, Derek Pettegrew and Tyler Pettegrew, and two sisters, Lola Kleeper Scott of Pass Christian, Miss., and Velda McCormick of Shreveport, La.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 10 at Frank Funeral Home. Services will be held at Sumner Memorial Gardens.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association in lieu of flowers.

Calling times at the funeral home are from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, December 8 and Thursday, December 9.

Frank Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Lucille Ames

TOPEKA -- Lucille Eleanor Ames, 94, of Topeka, passed away at a local care center on Friday, Dec. 24, 2004.

Mrs. Ames was born Jan. 22, 1910 in Perth, Kan., the daughter of Charles and Martha Thompson Stover.

She was married to Alpha H. Ames Sr. in Caldwell, Kansas on Nov. 25, 1936. He died in October 1993.

Mrs. Ames was a member of Central Congregational Church, and the Optimist Club of Topeka.

She enjoyed sewing and gardening and caring for family and friends.

Survivors include a son, Al Ames of Milan, Ohio; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Services will be held. today (Tuesday. Dec. 28. 2004), at Penwell-Gabels Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Heart of American Hospice, 3715 SW 29th, Suite 20. Topeka, KS 66614.

Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon 'Ralph' Bean

ANTHONY -- Vernon 'Ralph' Bean, 86, died Dec. 23, 2004 at Wichita, Kan.

He was born May 4, 1918 at Anthony, Kan., the son of Vernon Lloyd and Lucy (Trotter) Bean.

On July 21, 1939 he married Gladys Post at Anthony.

He was a retired Postmaster and a member of the United Methodist Church in Anthony, Kiwanis and the American Legion. He also served on several different boards, including the Hospital board, Friendship Meals Board and the Housing board.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joyce Rogers.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys of the home in Anthony; two sons, Vernon Harold and wife, Patty, of Milam, Texas and Donald Lloyd and wife, Carla, of Longmont, Co.; two daughters, Carol Ann Jacob and husband, Philip, of Larned, Kan., and Lois Elaine Wiechen of Harper, Kan.; brother, Marvin Bean and wife, Betty, of Wellington; 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27,2004 at the United Methodist Church in Anthony.

Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery, Prairie Rose Funeral Home.

Memorials are to the Kiwanis Scholarship Fund, United Methodist Church or Anthony Senior Citizens Memorials.

Prairie Rose Funeral Home, Williams Chapel of Anthony is in charge of arrangements.

Althea Haines

Althea Wagner Haines, 96, of Wellington, homemaker, died Saturday morning, Dec. 18, 2004 at Slate Creek Good Samaritan Center in Wellington, Kansas.

She was born the daughter of Ralph T. Egge and Irene Frances Elizabeth (Smith) Egge on July 13, 1908 in Allentown, Penn.

On Nov. 9, 1927 she and Eugene Chester Haines were united in marriage in Wichita, Kansas.

Althea worked at St. Lukes Hospital in Wellington, Kansas for a number of years as an aide.

When it came to gardening she had a natural green thumb. She loved to can her vegetables she grew. Althea was a strong family person. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Her husband and her family were her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Wilford Egge and Dean Egge.

Survivors include her husband of 77 years Eugene, sons Ronald Haines and his wife Doris of Wellington, and Eldon Haines and his wife Linda Rose of Eugene, Ore.; daughters Jeane Milligan of Wellington, Deane Halewood and her husband Bill of Ontario, Canada, and Loretta Woodbridge and her husband Ronald of Wellington, ; brother George Egge of San Diego, Calif.; sister-in-law Doris Egge of Roanoke, Va.; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

Memorial services for Althea will be held 1:30 p.m., Wednesday Dec. 29, 2004 at University Friends Church, 1840 University, Wichita

A memorial has been established in her name and loving memory with University Friends Church, 1840 University, Wichita, 67213. Contributions may be mailed or left at the funeral home.
