Thomas E. Arnold

Thomas E. Arnold, 90, Ottawa, a former Rantoul resident, died Thursday, June 30, 2005, in Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa.
He was born June 5, 1915, in Vermillion, Kan., the son of Anderson and Una Bell Hoag Arnold.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Doris Marie Walters on May 10, 1941, in Rich Hill, Mo. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Arnold was an oil field and railroad mechanic and welder.
He moved to Ottawa in the 1950s, later moving to Rantoul. He returned to Ottawa in 1992.
A brother, Albert Arnold; two sisters, Hazel Arnold and Eunice Canfield; and a grandson also preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas Arnold of Imperial, Mo., and Robert Arnold of Edgerton; three daughters, Barbara Ann Williams of Wellsville, Virginia Welch of Ottawa and Linda Foltz of Rolla, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Leslie D. Barrett
SEPT. 1, 1959 - JUNE 27, 2005
Leslie D. Barrett, 45, Rantoul, a former Paola resident, died Monday, June 27, 2005, in the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.
He was born Sept. 1, 1959, in Paola, the son of Leslie and Dorothy Fields Barrett. He lived most of his life in Paola. He graduated in 1977 from Paola High School.
He met Sandra Schultz in 1983, and they were married March 3, 1997. They made their home in Rantoul.
Mr. Barrett was in the concrete business. He was known for his work as a professional and for being one of the best in the business.
He loved sports, and his favorite was baseball. Once while pitching in Baxter Springs, Kan., he was referred to as the "long-legged" pitcher out on the mound. He also loved to fish and hunt, especially for turkeys. But, most of all, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
His father preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra Barrett of the home; a daughter, April Burns of Rantoul; a son, Raymond Fuller; his mother, Dorothy Barrett of Paola; a sister, Leora Christy of Olathe; two brothers, Bob Barrett of Olathe and Woody Barrett of Oxford, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services were Thursday in the Beagle Cemetery.

Roy Edwin Brassfield
MARCH 19, 1919 - JUNE 29, 2005
Roy Edwin Brassfield, 86, Olathe, a former Osawatomie and Paola resident and Osawatomie barber, died Wednesday, June 29, 2005, in the Good Samaritan Center in Olathe.
Mr. Brassfield owned and operated a barber shop in Osawatomie from 1953 until retiring in 1981.
He was born March 19, 1919, in Gardner, the son of Daniel Roy and Mattie Pearl Mooney Brassfield. He grew up in the Spring Ridge community and attended Wild Creek rural school.
On Jan. 28, 1939, he and Helen Lourean Swearingen were married in Paola. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of two daughters. They celebrated 66 years of marriage in January of this year.
He worked at Hercules for a time, first as a carpenter and then in making powder. He had also worked on the section gang for Missouri Pacific Railroad.
From April 1944 until April 1946, he served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
After being honorably discharged, he attended Moler Barber College in Kansas City, Mo. They lived in Paola and Ottawa before moving back to Osawatomie. They moved to Olathe in November 1989.
He also served as a volunteer deputy in Miami County and in the Osawatomie Police Department.
His memberships included the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Kansas Peace Officers Association.
Those preceding him in death included a brother, Lloyd, who died at the age of 9.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Helen Irene Fickell of Olathe and Judy Marie Milburn of Burlington; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two stepgranchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Osawatomie Cemetery
with military honors. Arrangements are under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie where he will be in state from 1 to 8 p.m. today.

Lois Geraldine Croson
NOV. 29, 1920 - JUNE 30, 2005
Lois Geraldine Croson, 84, Drexel, Mo., died Thursday, June 30, 2005, in Cass County Medical Center in Harrisonville, Mo.
Known as 'Gerry," she was born Nov. 29, 1920, in Cass County, Mo., the daughter of Perry B. Noland and Birdie May Bush. She attended schools in Freeman, Mo., and graduated from Freeman High School.
She married George Allen Croson on Feb. 12, 1942. Her husband died in 1980.
Mrs. Croson worked for the Cass County collector's office as a chief deputy tax collector for 24 years before retiring. Prior to that, she collected township taxes for 10 years. She also worked at the Little Shirt Co. in Freeman and ran her own maid service for many years.
She was always known for being the Avon lady. She received recognition this year for serving 45 years as an Avon representative. She was honored in 1991 with a Missouri Older Worker of the Year Award.
Others preceding her in death were two brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are her three daughters, Lois Marilyn Cook, Carolyn K. Gunnels and Beverly A. Estep; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home and burial was in Sharon Cemetery, both in Drexel.

Ethel Elizabeth Gill
MAY 9, 1915 - JUNE 29, 2005
Ethel Elizabeth Gill, 90, Osawatomie, a Beagle native, died Monday, June 29, 2005, in Miami County Medical Center in Paola.
She was born May 9, 1915, in Beagle, the daughter of Floyd Mitchell and Ruth Sally Gilbert Dedrick. She was the oldest of their three children. She graduated in 1933 from Paola High School. She then went to Kansas City Business College and worked in Kansas City. She moved to Pueblo, Colo.
After moving to Pueblo, Colo., she met Lyle Gill and they were married on Dec. 29, 1937. They lived in Penrose, Colo., before moving to California and then to Wichita. Her husband preceded her in death Oct. 22, 1971.
Mrs. Gill worked as a physician's administrative assistant until retiring in 1988.
Others preceding her in death were a brother, Charles Dedrick, who died in December 1993.
Survivors include her sister, Jean Stevens of Osawatomie.
Services were Monday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Burial was in Mound Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dennis Stevens, Steve Fabian, Richard Bennett, Dennis Creamer and Robert Dedrick.
Donna Kay Blackmon
MAY 15, 1945 - AUG. 20, 2005
Donna Kay Blackmon, 60, Osawatomie, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, in Miami County Medical Center in Paola.
Born May 15, 1945, in Kansas City, Kan., she was the daughter of Raymond Kenneth and Rose Margaret Wiltfong Powell. She attended school in North Platte Schools.
On Dec. 24, 1968, she and Claud S. Blackmon were married in Harrisonville, Mo. They lived in both Fontana and Paola for a short time before moving to Lane where they lived for more than 30 years. They had lived in Osawatomie for about five years.
Her hobbies included arts and crafts and antiques. She was especially talented in making floral arrangements.
Mrs. Blackmon had been a member of the Assembly of God in Paola.
Those preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Leroy Powell, Donald Gardner and one who died in infancy; a sister, Mable Nelson; and an infant daughter, Kathleen.
Survivors include her husband, Claud Blackmon of the home; her son, Kenneth Aron Blackmon of Fontana; her daughter, Tina M. Mullikin of Seattle, Wash.; two stepsons, Claud Blackmon II of Independence, Mo., and Joe Blackmon of Richmond, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Pam Blackmon of Independence, Mo.; a sister, Lara Sumpter of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie with burial in Lane Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight in the funeral home.
