GILLILAND: Wilbur H. Gilliland, 95 years old of Atchison, KS died Monday, October 08, 2007 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, Oct. 10th, 2007 at the First Christian Church with Rev. Lee Hendon, Pastor of the First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM on Tuesday, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church or the Atchison Humane Society and may be left in care of the funeral home. Wilbur was born on August 25, 1912 in Ottawa, KS, the son of Bert O. and Phoebe (Harris) Gilliland. He attended grade schools in Ottawa, and then Leavenworth, KS. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1930. He also took business courses at the American Technical School. After school Wilbur worked for the former Schappler Grocery, and then Intfens Grocery. Wilbur was married to Lois Nyhart on Oct. 12, 1934. She preceded him in death in Dec. 1980. Wilbur worked for Fleming-Wilson Wholesale Grocery. Wilbur and Lois purchased the Atchison Grocery from the Fleming Company in 1969. They owned and operated the Atchison Wholesale Grocery until 1989.
Mr. Gilliland was a member of the First Christian Church, Atchison, where he had served as Deacon, Elder, and was a former Chairman of the Church Board. He was presently Elder Emeritus of the Church. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #158, Atchison, KS, and the Atchison Chamber of Commerce. Wilbur was later married to Ruth Stillings on July 14, 1982 in Reno, NV. Ruth survives of the home in Atchison. Additional survivors include a step-son; Kelly and his wife Bonnie Stillings, Glenwood Springs, CO; Step Daughter, Nita Workman, Holton, KS; Sister; Deane Lightle, Hermiston, OR; six step grandchildren, four adopted grandchildren, fifteen step great grandchildren; four adopted great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and two sisters.
KANNING: Esther Mae Kanning, 85 years old, of Lancaster, KS died Wed. Oct. 3rd, 2007 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Funeral services will be held at 6:30 PM on Saturday, Oct. 6th, 2007 at the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS. Private family burial will be in the Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster, KS. The family will receive friends following the service at the First Christian Church. Esther Mae Wells was born on August 7, 1922 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Roy L. and Nadine (Herbst) Wells. She was a graduate of Atchison High School and Atchison Business College in 1940. Mrs. Kanning was a homemaker and housewife for most of her life. She had worked as a bookkeeper for Wilson & Co., Atchison. She was a member of the First Christian Church, a Deaconess of the church, a Board member of Atchison's Project Concern, the Extension Unit, the Kansas Farm Wives, and enjoyed baking, reading, sewing and crossword puzzles.
She was married to Edward Kanning on August 11, 1946 at the First Christian Church in Atchison. Mr. Kanning survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son; David and his wife Tracy Kanning, and their children, Alyson, Erin, and Andrew Kanning, Lancaster, KS, two daughters; Joyce Courtney and her son Michael Shane Courtney, St. Louis MO; and Nina and her husband Rick Wuestling and their children Caroline and John Wuestling, St. Louis, MO. Her parents, a daughter, Kathleen Kanning, and a brother, Richard E. Wells, preceded her in death.
HANSHAW: Bernice Evelyn Hanshaw, 88, Atchison, KS passed away Friday, September 28, 2007 at Medicalodge of Atchison.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS. Burial at Cummings Cemetery, Cummings, KS. Visitation will be from 7:00-8:30 PM Monday at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Bernice was born on August 15, 1919 in Pea Ridge, AR, the daughter of Joe and Flora (Mitchel) Dame. She was the second to the oldest of 13 children. She moved to Atchison when she was 2 years old. Their family owned land in the Branchton area of Atchison. She was a nurse’s aid at the Atchison Hospital for a few years, later she became a housewife. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
She married Robert Hanshaw, Sr. on August 15, 1938 in Atchison, KS. He preceded her in death on January 26, 1977. Her parents, a son Robert L. Hanshaw, Jr.; 4 brothers, Gene, Hank, Raymond and Bill Dame; 4 sisters Doris Guess, Jackie Hinton, Helen Dame and Wilma Dame all preceded her in death.
Bernice is survived by her son Terry Hanshaw and his wife Alane of Atchison; 3 daughters, Peggy Kemp of Atchison, Evelyn McLaughlin and her husband Tom of Muscotah; and Velvet Miller and her husband Dan of Tonganoxie. 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren; brother Sam Dame of Washington and 3 sisters, Margie Stone, Liz Kuhnert and Nancy Haughness all of Atchison.
SNODGRASS: Glenadene S. Snodgrass, 86, Atchison, KS passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at Medicalodge of Atchison.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, September 29, 2007 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A rosary will be said at 7:00 PM on Friday, followed by a visitation until 8:30 PM at the funeral home. Glenadene was born August 28, 1921 in Akron, CO the daughter of Edward and Sadie (Skeens)Sell. She moved to Atchison at the age of 27. She was employed with the Mount Saint Scholastica College and later Benedictine College as a switchboard operator. She also worked in the Tea Room, and helped with the Parents Weekend and graduation, retiring after 45 years. Glenadene enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles, raising dogs and especially loved being around her family and friends.
Glenadene married Vincent Snodgrass on August 8, 1938 in Reno, NV. He survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Jerry Vincent Snodgrass and his wife Margaret of Lakewood, CO; and daughter Joan Myers of Atchison. 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren and a sister Verneal Clark of St. Joseph, MO.
Her sister Mary Alice Clark, son-in-law Robert Myers and her parents preceded her in death.
GREGORY: Dora H. Gregory, 85 years old, of St. Joseph, MO., formerly of Rushville, MO., died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007 at the Saxton Riverside Care Center, St. Joseph, MO.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, Sept. 26th, 2007 at the Rushville Christian Church with Rev. Tim Champ officiating. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville, MO. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, Sept. 25th at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Dora Hubbs Gregory was born on Sept. 7, 1922 in Luttrell, TN., the daughter of O.C. and Eva (Chadwick) Hubbs. At an early age the family moved to Bearden, IN., where Dora attended grade school. The family moved back to the family farm and Dora completed high school at Maynardville High School, Maynardville, TN. She also attended college at Benedictine College, Atchison, and Highland Community College.
In 1943, she was married to Rev. J. Preston Gregory. They lived in Cimarron, Syracuse, Hartford, KS., where Rev. Gregory pastured Christian Church’s before coming to Rushville Christian Church in 1948. Rev. Gregory preceded her in death in 1983.
Mrs. Gregory retired from the Atchison Youth Center after 20 years as a Youth Services worker. She was a member of the Rushville Christian Church, the Queen Esther Class that she taught for many years. She was a member of the Shepherd Center, Atchison, where she was a past president and member of the Board. She was a former Cub Scout leader, 4-H Leader, and P.T.A. member. She also was a leader for the church youth groups for many years. She moved to St. Joseph in 1988.
She is survived by three sons; Jim and his wife Dot Gregory, Grand Blanc, MI., Dick and his wife Marcia, Huntsville, TX., and David and his wife Karen Gregory, Lenexa, KS., four grandchildren; Katrina and Chris Babcock, St. Joseph, Mo., Justin and Erica Gregory, Columbia, MO., Nelson and Holly Gregory, St. Joseph, MO., and Jared Gregory, Columbia, MO., Four step grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Her parents, husband, a son Steven Gregory, a brother and three sisters preceded her in death.
BARCLAY: Edna E. Barclay, 94 years old, of Atchison, KS. died Friday, September 21, 2007 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, Sept. 25th, 2007 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Hendon, Pastor of the First Christian Church officiating. Edna E. Scott was born on Aug. 13th, 1913 in Green City, MO., the daughter of Lawrence M. and Cora T. (Weston) Scott. She graduated from Green City High School and moved to Atchison in 1941. She was a homemaker and housewife, a member of the First Christian Church, the Christian Women’s Fellowship, the Parallel Home Demonstration Unit, and the Garden Club, of Atchison. Edna enjoyed flowers, crafts, and especially her family.
She was married to Paul B. Barclay on Jan. 17, 1935 in Brookfield, MO. Mr. Barclay preceded her in death on Nov. 21,2003. Her parents, a brother, Glen Scott, and two sisters’ Hattie Clem and and Oakel Mooreland also preceded her in death. Survivors include a son; Ted and his wife Juanita Barclay, Independence, MO., three grandchildren; Tom Barclay, Parkville, MO., Kevin Barclay, Westwood, KS., and Paula Barclay, Independence, MO. and four great grandchildren.
RYGAARD: Pearl Rygaard, 94, of Effingham, Kansas, passed away Monday, September 17, 2007 at the Atchison Senior Village.
A Celebration of Life Service will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 22, 2007 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Atchison. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on Friday, September 21, 2007 at the O’Trimble Funeral Home in Nortonville, KS. Pearl was born on October 26, 1912 in Troy, KS the daughter of Charles and Olga (Gurwell) Cox. She graduated from Bendena High School. Mrs. Rygaard was a homemaker for most of her life and was a member of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Unit for 50 years. Pearl was also on the Altar Guild and a member of WELCA at the church. Pearl was an excellent cook and enjoyed playing piano for the Cox Sister Orchestra, fishing and crocheting in her later years.
She married Gene Rygaard on October 23, 1934 in Bendena, KS. He preceded her in death on August 25, 1977. Her parents and sisters Daisy and Zelma Handke also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Wayne Rygaard and his wife Janet, and a daughter, Marcia Rygaard both of Effingham, KS; 5 grandchildren, 12 great-children and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
