Ashley Renee Robertson
Nov. 2, 1984 - March 13, 2006

Ashley Renee Robertson, 21, Ottawa, died Monday, March 13, 2006, in Ottawa.

She was born Nov. 2, 1984, in Olathe, the daughter of Gary Robertson and Debbie Cottrell. Miss Robertson was a lifelong resident of Ottawa and a 2003 graduate of Ottawa High School. She was a certified nurse's aide and currently attended Neosho County Community College in Ottawa. She had been a student there for 2 1/2 years, working towards a career as a registered nurse.

She attended the Church of the Nazarene in Ottawa.

Survivors include her mother, Debbie Millard of Ottawa; her father, Gary Robertson of Olathe; her fiance, Clayton Haag of Ottawa; and her grandmothers, Donna Cottrell of Lane and LaVina Robertson of Osawatomie.

Services were Friday in the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa. Burial was in the Osawatomie Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Franklin County Cancer Foundation in care of Dengel and Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, KS 66067.

Betty Jean Simpson Jackson
June 3, 1927 - June 25, 2006

Betty Jean Simpson Jackson, 79, Mound City, died Sunday, June 25, 2006. She suffered with cancer.

Born June 3, 1927, near Blue Mound, she was the daughter of Elmer and Elizabeth Simpson. On Sept. 19, 1949, she and Byron Dale Jackson were married in Mound City. They lived in the Centerville and rural Wall Street communities until his death Nov. 8, 1982.

Mrs. Jackson then lived in Shawnee Mission until the death of her friend, John Myers, on June 20, 2005.

Throughout her life, she was well known for her sewing and crocheting. She also owned and operated an upholstery business for many years.

Those preceding her in death included six brothers, Robert, Daniel, Eugene, LaVerne, Kenneth and Clarence, and five sisters, Pearl, Marjorie, Hazel, Veda and Virginia. She was the last surviving child of 12 siblings.

Survivors include a son, Dale Jackson of Uniontown, Kan.; a daughter, Diane Jackson of Mound City; and four granddaughters.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Wall Street Christian Church located on Linn County Road 554. Arrangements are under the direction of Charter Funerals in Shawnee Mission.

Edgar Johnson
May 25, 1920 - June 21, 2006

Edgar Johnson, 86, Ottawa, a native of Osawatomie, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, in Richmond Healthcare Center.

He was born May 25, 1920, in Osawatomie, the son of Louis M. and Cordie Alice Beck Johnson. He grew up in Osawatomie and was a 1938 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

In 1941 he moved to Little Rock, Ark. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, he returned to Osawatomie. He moved to Paola in 1953; to Princeton in 1975; and to Ottawa in 1985.

On Jan. 17, 1941, he and Miriam B. Potter were married in Osawatomie. She preceded him in death Oct. 4, 2005.

Mr. Johnson was a dairy farmer for 25 years and earlier worked as a switchman for Missouri-Pacific Railroad. He had also worked for the United States Postal Service in Osawatomie for a short time.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Osawatomie and Warren Black Post No. 60 of the American Legion in Ottawa.

Others preceding him in death were six brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include a son, Rick Johnson of Greeley; a daughter, Loretta Edwards of Garnett; and five grandchildren.

Inurnment services were Friday in the Osawatomie Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Midland Hospice in care of Dengel and Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, KS 66067.

Raymond Brown
Raymond Brown, 88, Ottawa, a former Paola and Osawatomie resident, died June 22, 2006, in Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa. Survivors include his wife, Mary Brown.

Herbert E. Shuey
Herbert E. Shuey, 64, Olathe, died June 16, 2006 in his home. He lived in Osawatomie as a child with his parents, Dr. Herbert H. and Louise E. Craig Shuey. His father was chief psychologist at the Osawatomie State Hospital.

Andrea Lee Renick-Bell
June 26, 1948 - July 16, 2006

Andrea Lee Renick-Bell, 58, Osawatomie, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, in her home.

Mrs. Renick-Bell was well known in the Osawatomie community, having served as site administrator for the John Brown State Historic Site. She was active on the Osawatomie Tourism Committee, a staff member of the Kansas State Historical Society and was active in many other community activities.

She was born June 26, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Don Baker and Kathryn May Long Snapp. In 1966 she graduated from the Prescott, Ariz., High School and then attended a community college in Arizona for two years.

She and Billie Wheatley were married in the late 1960s. They made their home in Arizona and became the parents of three sons.

In the mid 1970s she and Charles Renick were married. They became the parents of one daughter, Melinda Renick. She died in a traffic accident in 1992.

On March 12, 1994, she and Everett Bell were married in the Old Stone Church in Osawatomie. They made their home in Osawatomie.

Her other memberships included the Miami County Airport Association, the First United Methodist Church of Osawatomie, the Frontier Twirlers Square Dance Club of Osawatomie and the Miami County Cloggers.

Others preceding her in death were her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Everett Bell of the home; three sons, Neal Wheatley of Bettendorf, Iowa, Nick Wheatley of Linn Valley and Scott Wheatley of Osawatomie; two step daughters, Mary Hansuld and Marsha Douglas, both of Shawnee; a sister, Elzabeth Kirkaldie of Portland, Ore.; a brother, Arthur Snapp of Avondale, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, 203 Main St., Osawatomie. Visitation will follow the service. Burial will be in Osawatomie Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in her name to Midland Hospice in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 430, Osawatomie, KS 66064.

Randy L. Houghton
April 8, 1962 - Aug. 11, 2006

Randy L. Houghton, 44, a former Osawatomie resident, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, in his home in Gardner after an almost two-year struggle with melanoma cancer.

He was born April 8, 1962, in Cameron, Mo., the son of Jimmie Lee and Ruby Eileen House Houghton. The family moved in the late 1970s to Osawatomie, where he attended several years of elementary and junior high school. They moved to Olathe and he graduated from Olathe High School. He had lived in Gardner since 1997.

Mr. Houghton worked at Dougan's Sod and Seeding for a short time after graduating. He was then a production manager and worked more than 20 years for Broadway Collections in Olathe, later known as Ingersoll-Rand, until its closing several years ago. The company manufactured fancy brass fittings for homes and hotels.

He was a great outdoorsman who loved to play golf and go boating. He was an avid fan of the University of Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas City Chiefs and Royals.

His father preceded him in death.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Ruby and Dale David Crozier of Paola; his three children, Christi Houghton and Trisha Houghton, both of Olathe, and David Houghton of Gardner; his brother, Steven Michael Houghton of Olathe; a sister, Lisa D. Oswald of Gardner; and three stepsisters, Lisa Joann Houghton of Olathe, Lynn Hauschel of Springfield, Mo., and Lori Vetter of Allan, Texas. Also surviving is his fianceé, Lisa M. Hunter, and her son, Nathan Hunter, both of Gardner.

Graveside services were Tuesday in Osawatomie Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society and can be sent in care of Bruce Funeral Home, P.O. Box 192, Gardner, KS 66030.

Lois Winona James Morris
Feb. 17, 1922 - Aug. 9, 2006

Lois Winona James Morris, 84, Osawatomie, died Aug. 9, 2006, in North Point Skilled Nursing Center in Paola.

She was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Miami County near Paola, the only child of Clarence and Lois Walters Day. Her mother died when she was born.

Her father then married Gladys Roberts who Mrs. Morris knew as her "mother."

She attended Union Valley School and was a 1940 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

She married Gerald Dean James of Lane and they became the parents of five children.

At the age of 26 she began attending the Spring Grove Friends Church of rural Osawatomie and was saved through the ministry of Pastor Ferne Cook. Mrs. Morris joined the meeting and attended for more than 50 years before illness prevented her attendance. She served as clerk of the meeting for many years, spent many years teaching Sunday school and Bible study and played the piano.

After the death of her first husband, she went to work at the Osawatomie State Hospital. She was a psychiatric aide and worked her way up to mental health technician III.

She and Everett Morris were married Nov. 30, 1984, and she retired on May 1, 1985. They traveled to Hawaii, Ireland and to most of the United States. Summers they spent in La Cygne. Mr. Morris died in 1988.

Her hobbies included oil painting and bird watching.

Others preceding her in death were her daughter, Jillane Edith, who died two days after birth, and a half sister, Barbara Jean Day, who died at the age of 5.

Survivors include Larry Rodger James of Olathe and J.C.James of Osawatomie; two daughters, Linda Carol James Bowater of San Antonio, Texas, and Jerilyn Ferne James Herriges of Osawatomie; her half sister, Phyllis Day of Osawatomie; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie and burial was in Lane Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kansas or the church in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 430, Osawatomie, KS 66064.
