Ines Smithhisler

Ines Smithhisler, 91, Osawatomie, died Friday, April 16, 2004, in North Point Skilled Nursing Center in Paola.
She was born Oct. 10, 1912, in La Cygne, the daughter of Abe Vellie and Ida May Chamberlain Milton. She grew up and attended local schools in La Cygne.
On July 7, 1940, she and Claude H. Smithhisler were married in Richmond, Mo. They made their home in Kansas City, Mo., and became the parents of two children. In 1945, they moved to a farm south of Osawatomie. She continued to lived there until moving to Osawatomie in the early 1970s.
She had worked as a waitress and at Mode O'Day in Osawatomie and at Hercules Powder Plant in De Soto.
Mrs. Smithhisler was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osawatomie.
Those preceding her in death were her husband, who died Sept. 1, 1963; a brother, William Milton; and two sisters, Velma Keelin and Leona Edwards.
Survivors include her son, Donald Ray Smithhisler of Osawatomie; her daughter, Claudette Wigle of Shawnee; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Pallbearers were Derek Smithhisler, Bryan Smithhisler, Chad Smithhisler, Glenn Minden, Jim Fisher, Matt Fisher and Tim Jones. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association.
George W. Parks
George W. Parks, 75, Smithville, Mo., the brother of Evelyn Lohaus of Paola, died April 13, 2004.
Carl W. Schweiger
Carl W. Schweiger, 65, Overland Park, the brother of Joseph Schweiger and Dorothy McClain, both of Osawatomie, and Mary Rice of Wellsville, died April 12, 2004.
Robert Lee Griner
MAY 2, 1933 - JUNE 13, 2004
Robert Lee Griner, 71, Mound City, formerly of Adrian, Mo., died Sunday, June 13, 2004, in St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, Mo.
He was born May 2, 1933, in Archie, Mo., the son of William and Nannie Gilkerson Griner. He was a graduate of Adrian High School in Adrian, Mo.
He and Mary Snider were married July 12, 1978.
Mr. Griner was an insurance salesman for Prudential Insurance until his retirement in 1993.
He was a member of the Sugar Valley Golf and Country Club in Mound City and a past member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Fort Scott and Nevada, Mo.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Griner of Mound City; two sons, Robert L. Griner II of Fort Smith, Ark., and Kevin Griner of Overland Park; a daughter, Lesa M. Post of Mapleton, Kan.; a brother, William G. Griner of Belton, Mo.; a sister, Mary E. Yager of Belton; and one granddaughter.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Woodland Cemetery
in Mound City. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time in Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City.

Betty Hammond
MARCH 4, 1924 - JUNE 6, 2004
Betty Hammond, 80, a longtime resident of Osawatomie, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, in her home.
Born March 4, 1924, in Lane, she was one of the 10 children of Frank and Bertha McDonald Weiland. In 1926 the family moved to Osawatomie, where she grew up and attended school.
She and James E. Hammond were married June 5, 1952. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of two sons. Mr. Hammond died Nov. 7, 1966.
In February 1980, she and Elle Dunlap were married. He died in 1981.
Mrs. Hammond had worked at the Osawatomie State Hospital for about 10 years. She also managed the El Rey Tavern in Osawatomie during the 1970s.
She was a member of the Hanlin-Kelly Post No. 2278 Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Others preceding her in death included two brothers and six sisters.
Survivors include her two sons, Bill Hammond of Mt. Airy, N.C., and Tom Hammond of Wichita; a sister, Evelyn Lombardo of Westminster, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Services were Thursday in Osawatomie Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie.
Doris Elaine Hicks
OCT. 11, 1920 - JUNE 6, 2004
Doris Elaine Hicks, 83, Ottawa, a Rantoul native, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, in Olathe Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 11, 1920, in Rantoul, the daughter of Marion and Blanche Alice Mills Vail. She completed eighth grade at West Valley School. She was a lifelong Franklin County resident and moved to Ottawa in 1943.
She married Earl R. Hicks on Sept. 24, 1945, in Lawrence. He died Sept. 15, 1989.
Mrs. Hicks began working as a sales clerk at Gibson's Discount Center in Ottawa on April 24, 1965. The store changed names to Pamida and then became Wal-Mart. She retired Sept. 19, 1987, but returned to Wal-Mart on March 22, 1992, to work as a door greeter and demonstrator. She was employed in the grocery department at the time of her death.
She was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post No. 5901 Auxiliary.
Others preceding her in death were a brother, Harold Dean Vail, and two sisters, Evelyn Vail and Ila Mae Whirley.
Surviving are two daughters, Earlene Rae Hicks of Ottawa and Marcia Elaine Chapman of Wellsville; a sister, Emma Jayne Stottlemire of Ottawa; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were Thursday in Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa. Burial was in Highland Cemetery
in Ottawa.

Dollie Lucille Jamison
DEC. 11, 1914 - JUNE 13, 2004
Dollie Lucille Jamison, 89, Fort Scott, formerly of Mound City and former Linn County register of deeds, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, in Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott.
She was born Dec. 11, 1914, near Mapleton, Kan., the daughter of Arthur and Fallie Demott Nickelson. On Jan. 3, 1931, she and D.C. Jamison were married. He preceded her in death in March 1987.
Mrs. Jamison served as Linn County register of deeds for 13 years.
She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Fort Scott and a former member of the United Methodist Church in Mound City. She was a member of United Methodist Women and American Legion Auxiliary.
She moved to Fort Scott in 1990 to be closer to her family.
Also preceding her in death was a sister, Ruth Cosens.
Survivors include a son, Gene Ray Jamison of Fort Scott; a sister, Arlene Snow of Mapleton, Kan.; and 10 grandchildren.
Services were today in Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery
in Mound City.

Russell J. Littleton
JULY 13, 1943 - JUNE 8, 2004
Russell J. Littleton, 60, Centerville, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in his home.
He was born July 13, 1943, in Illinois, the son of Jesse J. and Patricia Kelloge.
He and Judy Wear were married June 30, 1984.
Mr. Littleton served in the Vietnam War as a member of the U.S. Army.
Those preceding him in death were his parents and a daughter, Velma Littleton.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Littleton of Gorin, Mo.; three sons, Ricky Miller and Danny Miller of Gorin, and Danny Littleton of Quincy, Ill.; three daughters, Julie Miller of Gorin, Theresa Littleton of Quincy, and Peggy Littleton of West Virginia; three brothers, Paul Littleton, Roger Littleton and Albert Brown; two sisters; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Mr. Littleton was cremated. Inurnment will be at a later date in Leavenworth National Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Coffel-Schneider Funeral Homes.
