Margaret E. Neill

Margaret E. Neill, 92, a former Lane resident, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, in Chapman Valley Manor in Abilene, Kan.
The daughter of Elzy and Pearl Mae Whitney Davis, she was born March 8, 1911, in Hollow, Okla., where she grew up.
She married Alva Mount in 1929. They were divorced in 1933.
In 1939, she and W.A. Neill were married. They lived in Lane all their married life until retiring and moving to Ottawa in 1977. He preceded her in death in February 1993. She moved to Abilene in 1995 to live at Sterling House and Frontier Estates.
Mrs. Neill was a member of Evelena Chapter No. 435 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Lane.
Three brothers and a sister also preceded her in death.
Surviving are a son, Gene Mount of Abilene; a sister, Era Fugate of Emporia; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the Lane Cemetery. Arrangements were cared for by Danner Funeral Home in Abilene, Kan.

Nellie Humphrey
(Jan. 4, 1930 - April 10, 2003)
Nellie Humphrey, 73, Ottawa, former Osawatomie resident, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, in St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
She was born Jan. 4, 1930, in Osawatomie, a daughter of Trinidad and Graciana Venegas Vasquez. She grew up in Osawatomie where she attended St. Philip Neri Catholic School.
She and Jerald Thomas Humphrey were married Aug. 8, 1959, in Minneapolis, Minn. They became the parents of four children.
The Humphreys made their home in Minneapolis for a time before moving to Osawatomie in the early 1960s. They then lived in Lane for a short time before moving back to Osawatomie and then to Lawrence where they lived for nine years. They moved to Ottawa in the mid 1980s and have lived there since that time.
Mrs. Humphrey had worked at Davies Laundry in Osawatomie and in housekeeping at the University of Kansas while living in Lawrence.
Planting and caring for flowers and cooking were some of the things she enjoyed the most.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa.
Those preceding her in death included a brother, Manuel Vasquez, and four sisters, Jay Brady, Delores Mason, Neives Dela Cruz and Mary Govea.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Jerald Thomas Humphrey Jr. of Lexington Park, Md.; three daughters, Tina Iden of Lawrence, Laura Atchison of Baldwin City and Sandra Humphrey of Ottawa; a brother, Joe Vasquez of Osawatomie; two sisters, Toni Carter of Minneapolis, Minn., and Delphina Esquivel of Monrovia, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
Services were Monday in St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Osawatomie. Family members served as pallbearers. Cremation followed the services. Arrangements were under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie.

Barbara L. "Bobbie" Dickson
Barbara L. "Bobbie" Dickson, 68, Overland Park, the mother of Mack Dickson of Paola, died April 12, 2003.
Richard "Dick" A. Granger
Richard "Dick" A. Granger, 70, Olathe, the father of Connie Granger of Hillsdale, died April 12, 2003.
Larry E. Knight
SEPT. 7, 1939 - DEC. 22, 2003
Larry E. Knight, 64, Rantoul, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, in his home. He had been disabled since 1992, suffering with a heart condition, and then developed cancer.
He bequeathed his body to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., for anatomical science.
He was born Sept. 7, 1939, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of David Edward and Susan Martha Gunn Knight. He grew up in Edwardsville, Kan., where he attended school and graduated from Bonner Springs High School.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
He and Janet Gunn were married Feb. 2, 2001, in Miami, Okla.
He had made his home in Rantoul for eight years and lived in Gladstone, Mo., prior to that time.
Those preceding him included his parents and two children.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Gunn-Knight, of the home; two sons, Paul Knight and Ronald Knight, both of Kansas City, Mo.; five stepchildren; a sister, Janet Page of Parker; three brothers, Bob Knight of Olathe, John Roy Knight of Kansas City, Kan. and John David Knight of Edwardsville; several grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be conducted at a later date.

Leah H. Pence
DEC. 13, 1930 - DEC. 24, 2003
Leah H. Pence, 73, Osawatomie, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, in her home.
She was born Dec. 13, 1930, in Labette County near Chetopa, Kan., the daughter of Lewis Franks and Vada L. Walker Meriweather. She was raised in the Chetopa and Oswego areas and attended Oswego High School.
She married Harold G. Pence Sept. 13, 1947, in Garland, Kan. They lived in Missouri and Kansas until 1951, when they moved to South Dakota, and returned in 1952 to Kansas City, Mo. They moved in 1958 to Olathe, where they lived for 32 years until moving in 1990 to Osawatomie.
Mrs. Pence was a licensed beautician in Kansas and Missouri and owned and operated her own beauty shop at Sunflower Village, Kan.
Surviving are her husband, Harold Pence of the home; a son, Larry Gene Pence of Louisburg; a daughter, Marylin N. Duckworth of Eldon, Mo.; a brother, Lewis Meriweather of Wessington, S.D.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Saturday in Sheffield Cemetery
near Arcadia, Kan. Arrangements were by Bedene Funeral Home of Arma, Kan.
Bert H. Ripley
AUG. 2, 1920 - DEC. 23, 2003
Bert H. Ripley, 83, lifelong Osawatomie-area resident, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, in his home.
He was born Aug. 2, 1920, in Osawatomie, the son of Bert and Ethlyn Johnson Ripley. He attended Osawatomie High School.
Shortly after high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned to Osawatomie after being honorably discharged.
He and Wilma Brady were married Jan. 12, 1947, in Osawatomie.
Mr. Ripley worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for more than 40 years before retiring in 1980 as a carman.
He was an active member of St. James-Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Paola. He and his wife had great enjoyment from the church, which was a source of inspiration and hope for them. He served on various boards with the church through the years.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge, American Legion, of which he was a past commander, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Osawatomie. He was a Salvation Army representative for a number of years and also was a volunteer and member of East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Development Corp.
Mr. Ripley enjoyed fishing, gardening, flowers, traveling and his volunteer work.
Preceding him in death were two brothers, James Monroe and Robert Ripley, and two sisters, Helen Wells and Mary Johnson.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Ripley of the home, and two sisters, Wanda Shelby and Evelyn Ripley, both of Oakland, Calif.
Services were Friday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery.

Johnnie Ursery
MAY 18, 1909 - DEC. 20, 2003
Johnnie Ursery, 94, Osawatomie, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, in Olathe Medical Center.
She was born May 18, 1909, in Clarksville, Ark., the daughter of Charlie and Harriett Le Moyne Joiner. She attended Clarksville schools.
She and Alex Newton were married Jan. 26, 1929, in Clarksville where they made their home. They became the parents of two children. They were later divorced.
In May 1945 she and Brady Ursery were married and they moved to Osawatomie to make their home. They became the parents of two sons and raised a foster son.
She did domestic work for years and retired from Holiday Manor in Osawatomie.
Mrs. Ursery was a faithful member of Brown Chapel St. James AME Church and raised her family in the church.
Those preceding her in death were her husband; two sons, Kenneth Newton and John E. Ursery; five sisters; and two brothers.
Survivors include her sons, Robert Dryden of Kansas City, Kan., and Bradie Ursery of Osawatomie; a daughter, Rutha Eastland of Riverside, Calif.; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Pallbearers were Lester Lindsey, Roy Reed, W.T. Everett, Clayton Robinson, Robert Hill Sr. and Quincy Garrett. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery.
Memorials are to the Black Ties Scholarship Fund and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
