Goldie V. Cross

Goldie V. Cross, 94, Kearney, Mo., a former Paola resident, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004.
She was born March 6, 1919, in Olathe, the daughter of Charles and Lillie Mae King Tharp. She was raised in Olathe.
She and her husband, Willard Cross, farmed in the Olathe, Paola, Gardner, Belton, Mo., and Tonganoxie areas. He preceded her in death.
Before her retirement, she was a commercial proofreader.
She was a member of the Friendship Valley Club and attended the Kearney United Methodist Church.
Also preceding her in death were a son, Charles; three sisters; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Surviving are her son, Jean Cross of Tonganoxie; three daughters, Patty Zuel of Pleasant Hill, La., Barbara Ranney of Kansas City, Mo., and Kathy Parker of Holt, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday at Fry-Runyan Funeral Home in Kearney. Burial was in Olathe Memorial Cemetery.

Susan Rachel Fennel
NOV. 5, 1970 - NOV. 23, 2004
Susan Rachel Fennel, 34, La Cygne, a former Osawatomie resident, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, in Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott of injuries she received in a two-vehicle accident in Linn County.
She was born Nov. 5, 1970, in Paola, the daughter of Vernon Lee Fennel and Sandra Ann Collingwood Fennel. She was raised in Osawatomie and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1988.
She was employed at Cathy's Corner Restaurant in Paola as a waitress.
Ms. Fennel lived in Osawatomie and Mound City before making her home in La Cygne with her companion, Steven Guinn.
She enjoyed fishing, feeding birds, hunting, gardening and spending time with her family.
She was dedicated to her children and enjoyed every minute she was able to spend with them. She was pregnant at the time of her death and was looking forward to the birth of her baby, who was to be named Gracie Lee.
Those preceding her in death include a brother, Vernon Fennel Jr., and her grandparents, Merle and Lucy Rigg Collingwood and Burley and Daisy Fennel.
Survivors include her companion, Steven Guinn of La Cygne; two sons, Dylan Fennel and Steven Fennel, both of the home; her mother, Sandra Fennel of Osawatomie; her father, Vernon Fennel of Lane; a brother, Mark Fennel of Paola; and two sisters, Carla Duncan of Bucklin, Mo., and Melody Allen of Osawatomie.
Graveside services were Saturday in Osawatomie Cemetery.

Harry O. Barnes
APRIL 23, 1915 - MARCH 23, 2005
Harry O. Barnes, 89, Spring Hill, a Hillsdale native and former Paola resident, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, in Olathe Medical Center.
He was born April 23, 1915, in Hillsdale, the son of James and Mattie Jennings Barnes. He grew up in the Hillsdale area and attended grade school in Miami County.
He married Helen M. Smith in June 1938 in Kansas City, Mo. After their marriage, they lived in the Paola area and later moved back to the farm in Hillsdale, where they lived for 32 years before moving to Spring Hill in 1992.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and spent 30 months in the European Theater. He received a Bronze Star before being honorably discharged in 1945.
Mr. Barnes was employed at Pure Gold Dairy in Paola and Osawatomie before the war and for many years after. He later worked for Hall's Trucklines in Olathe for 17 years before retiring.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, both in Paola.
Mr. Barnes enjoyed making wood crafts, growing tomatoes and cracking walnuts, which he sold.
Preceding him in death were a sister, Lelah May Bushnell, and two brothers, Noah Barnes and Harley Barnes.
Survivors include his wife, Helen M. Barnes of the home; a son, Daryl W. Barnes, and a brother, Fred Jennings Barnes, both of Baldwin City; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Services were Saturday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola. Burial was in Fontana Cemetery.

Jimmie Allen Duncan
FEB. 12, 1924 - MARCH 23, 2005
Jimmie Allen Duncan, 81, longtime Paola resident, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, in Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 12, 1924, in Fort Scott, the son of George and Olive Miller Duncan He was one of a set of twins born prematurely, and the other twin did not survive. He was raised in Fort Scott and graduated in 1942 from Fort Scott High School.
He soon went to work as a clerk for the Frisco Railroad, a position he held for more than 30 years before retiring in 1974. He was a dedicated member of the International Brotherhood of Railroad Clerks.
He married Marie Frances Fisher on June 24, 1945, in Paola. They lived in Paola and became the parents of four sons. His wife preceded him in death Nov. 6, 1992.
Mr. Duncan was active in the Paola community. He was a member of the First Christian Church; Paola Lodge No. 37, A.F.&A.M., where he was a member for 59 years and served as master in 1956; and the Order of the Eastern Star, of which he was a past worthy patron. He was a member of the Ruritans, a charter member of the Paola Sunrise Lions Club and, for many years in the 1960s and 1970s, a member of the National Campers and Hikers Association.
He volunteered for the local blood bank and worked on the election board for many years. He served on the board of directors of the Paola Senior Center and Paola Housing Authority.
One of his favorite pastimes was visiting with his many friends. He enjoyed going to the senior center for lunch and getting together with friends for dinner. He made the comment many times to his sons, "When someone says, 'Let's go,' I have my hat on."
He also enjoyed many trips the family would take every year, camping, and watching Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals games and University of Kansas Jayhawks basketball games.
Another brother, Darrel Duncan, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his four sons, Myrl Duncan of Topeka, Dale Duncan of Kansas City, Mo., Keith Duncan of Tuttle, Okla., and Brian Duncan of Salina; a brother, Gerald Duncan of Lake Kahola, Kan.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday in the church and burial was in Hillsdale Cemetery.

Arthur Aften Hicks
JUNE 28, 1917 - MARCH 25, 2005
Arthur Aften Hicks, 87, Paola, formerly of Iola, died Friday, March 25, 2005, in Country Club Estates in Paola.
He was born June 28, 1917, in Apache, Okla., the oldest of the four children of Joseph Owen and Ludia Viola Smith Hicks. He attended Boone School in Apache only through the seventh grade as he was needed to help on the family farm during the Depression.
Mr. Hicks attended a national defense school in Hawthorne, Calif. in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1942. He served with the 712th Tank Battalion in France and was honorably discharged on Oct. 31, 1945.
In 1948 he moved with his parents from Oklahoma to Kansas and settled on the family farm 4 miles north of La Harpe.
He and Dorothy Jean Sanders were married in May 1950. They adopted Leland Miles Race and became the father of three children, Helen, Sue Ellen and Arthur Patrick. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1969.
In September 1974 he and Nellie McNeill Reams of Apache were married in Las Vegas, Nev. They made their home in Iola until her death in May 2003. Since that time Mr. Hicks had lived in Country Club Estates.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in LaHarpe and Masonic Lodge No. 223 in Apache. Until recent years, he was active in the annual reunions of the 712th Tank Battalion, which allowed he and his wife to travel to many states.
Others preceding him in death were a sister, Effie Shockley; a brother, Joseph Hicks; his son, Leland Miles Hicks; and a grandson, Leland Miles Hicks Jr.
Survivors include his four children, Helen Brand of Osawatomie, Sue Riley of Fort Scott, Patrick Hicks of Iola and Phyllis Reames Pamplin of Ringwood, Okla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Tuesday in Moran Cemetery
in Moran, Kan. Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home of Osawatomie cared for the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mildred N. Johnston
JAN. 14, 1914 - MARCH 25, 2005
Mildred N. Johnston, 91, Osawatomie, died Friday, March 25, 2005, in Miami County Medical Center in Paola.
The daughter of Isaac and Jessie Caves Farris, she was born Jan. 14, 1914, in Boicourt, Kan. She and Leroy E. Baker were married in 1934. They became the parents of three sons. Their marriage ended in divorce.
In 1941 she and Frank Stevenson were married and they became parents of three sons. They were later divorced.
She and Walter Gene Stringham were married in 1955. They became parents of a son and a daughter. Their marriage ended in 1967.
Mrs. Johnston worked for 11 years in housekeeping at the Osawatomie State Hospital. She retired in 1979. She had also worked as a cook in restaurants.
She was a foster grandparent through TRI-KO Inc. in Osawatomie for many years.
Those preceding her in death included two sons, Kenneth Baker, who died in infancy, and Darryl Baker, who died in 2004; a daughter, Mary Alice Baker; and a brother, Howard Farris.
Survivors include five sons, Donald Baker of Prairie Village, Francis Stevenson of Olpe, Kan., Jimmy Stevenson of Lusby, Md., Fred Stevenson of Rantoul and Ron Stringham of Osawatomie; a daughter, Janet Chmidling of Edgerton; a brother, Harold Farris of Arkansas; two sisters, Dorothy Reynolds of Kansas City, Kan., and Marjorie Gilchrist of Osawatomie; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie with burial in Osawatomie Cemetery.
