Alfred Hardesty
JUNE 13, 1917 - NOV. 29, 2003

Alfred Hardesty, 86, Garnett, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in his home.

A son of Prince Albert and Emma Ann Martin Hardesty, he was born June 13, 1917, in the home where he lived all of his life. He attended Sunbeam School and then worked on the family farm.

During his working years he was self-employed in his own home interior/exterior business. He retired in 1979.

Mr. Hardesty worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps camp and helped build the North Lake at Garnett.

He and Goldie Olson were married April 15, 1938, in Garnett.

Mr. Hardesty loved his farm and his cattle. He also enjoyed attending dances.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Garnett.

Those preceding him in death included two brothers, Earl Hardesty and Pyrl Hardesty; a half brother, Vearl; and two half sisters, Lola Mae, who died in infancy, and Opal.

Survivors include his wife, Goldie Hardesty of Garnett; a daughter, Mary Martin of Garnett; a brother, Charles Hardesty of Garnett; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two step great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Burial was in Garnett Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the church or Allen County Hospice in care of the funeral home at P.O. Box 408, Garnett, KS 66032.

Romana Eva Head
OCT. 6, 1922 - NOV. 26, 2003

Romana Eva Head, 81, Overland Park, former Osawatomie resident and a native of Italy, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, in the Olathe Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 6, 1922, in Gorizia, Italy, the daughter of Quirroino and Giorgina Viola Fabris. While living in Italy, she was a certified teacher.

She and Clifford Benjamin Head were married Aug. 1, 1946, in Gorizia. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of three children.

The Head family had lived in Overland Park since 1962. She worked as a seamstress for Alaskan Fur in Overland Park.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Larry James Head of Boise, Idaho; two daughters, Patricia Ann Huston of Mission and Rosemary Eva East of Overland Park; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services were Monday in St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Osawatomie. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery. Pallbearers were Franklin Head, Joshua East, Ben Parra, Richard Huston, Stephen Huston, Vince Koehler, Guiliano Radolovich and Carlo Radolovich. Services were under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Ruth Margaret Banister
JUNE 7, 1922 - JAN. 3, 2004

Ruth Margaret Banister, 81, Olathe, a former Bucyrus, Lane and Spring Hill resident, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, in Olathe Medical Center.

The daughter of John William and Loreita Elizabeth Pratt Bauer, she was born June 7, 1922, in Kansas City, Kan. She was a graduate of Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kan.

She married Orval Banister on March 29, 1946, in Kansas City, Kan. They had lived in Basehor, Lenexa, Bucyrus, Lane and Spring Hill. Her husband died Dec. 14, 2003.

Mrs. Banister was a homemaker. Her family was number one in her life.

She was a member of the Spring Hill United Methodist Church and was active in its United Methodist Women.

Others preceding her in death include four sisters, Anna Mary Bauer, Pauline Bauer, Elizabeth Jane Velghe and Rose Marie Wren; a brother, Harold Vincent Bauer; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are two sons, James William Banister of Kansas City, Kan., and Claude Lester Banister of Greenview, Mo.; five daughters, Judith Rhea Banister of Olathe, Karen Ruth Knight and Anna Marie French, both of Spring Hill, Margaret Loreita Kellerman of Louisburg and Nancy Jane DiGesualdo of Linn Creek, Mo.; a sister, Catherine Irene Foster of Blue Springs, Mo.; two brothers, John W. Bauer Jr. of Shawnee and George Eugene Bauer of Kansas City, Kan.; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday prior to service time at 11 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association or Head Trauma Association in care of Bruce Funeral Home, P.O. Box 7, Spring Hill, KS 66083.

Anne E. DeWitt Branstetter
NOV. 24, 1959 - JAN. 1, 2004

Anne E. DeWitt Branstetter, 44, died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, in her home in Paola.

"Annie,' as she was known to family and friends, was the daughter of Homer L. and Mary Beth Branstetter. She was born Nov. 24, 1959, in Kansas City, Mo. She moved to Paola about seven years ago.

She had been attending nursing school, where she excelled in her studies and was on the dean's national honor list.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Paola.

An animal lover, she enjoyed being with her pets.

Preceding her in death were her father; a brother, Kelly M. Branstetter; and her grandmother, Lula Gildea.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Mary Beth and Harold Schuyler of Paola; two brothers, Jeff Branstetter and Dennis Branstetter, both of Paola; and a sister, Leaslie Denny of Shawnee. Survivors also include her companion, J.R. Young.

A Mass of Resurrection was today in Curé of Ars Church in Mission. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Anne E. Branstetter Memorial Fund in care of McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.

Fred C. Cole
NOV. 24, 1934 - DEC. 29, 2003

Fred C. Cole, 69, Iola, a former Paola and Osawatomie area resident, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, in Allen County Hospital in Iola.

He was born Nov. 24, 1934, in Centerville, Kan., the son of Fred O. and Pauline J. Graves Cole. He was raised in the Paola and Osawatomie areas.

He married Lavern Smothers Mether and they became the parents of two children, Vernon and Darline. They were later divorced. He then married Shirley M. Gineste in Little Rock, Ark. They had four sons and were married for 45 years.

Mr. Cole was a construction worker all of his life and traveled many places with his wife and family.

Those preceding him in death included two sons, Vernon and Billy; a daughter, Debbie; three sisters, Betty, Jean and Donna; and two brothers, Bill and Bobby.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Marie Cole of the home; four sons, Eddie Allen Cole, Larry Wayne Cole and Terry Lee Cole, all of Iola, and Fred Kenneth Cole of Paola; a brother, Larry Raymond Cole of Spring Hill; two sisters, Mary Stocksen of Osawatomie and Bonnie Joy of Benedict, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were Saturday in Johnson-Kunkel Mortuary in Moran, Kan. Inurnment followed in Overview Cemetery in Mildred, Kan.

Memorials may be made to Home Health of Iola in care of the mortuary, 217 East Second, Moran, KS 66755.

Thelma Rae Coleman
JUNE 18, 1908 - JAN. 2, 2004

Thelma Rae Coleman, 95, Pleasanton, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, in Prescott Country View Nursing Home in Prescott.

She was born June 18, 1908, in Troy, Kan., the daughter of John A. and Mary Ann Brooks Coleman.

Miss Coleman was a member of the Federated Church in Mound City.

Those preceding her in death included a brother, Loren, who died at the age of 4.

No survivors were listed.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Linnville Cemetery in Mound City. Arrangements are under the direction of Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Pleasanton.

Memorials may be made to the charity chosen by the donor.
