Kenneth W. Dick
(Died Jan. 25, 2002)
Kenneth W. Dick, 60, Overland Park, a former resident of Shawnee, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, in his home. He suffered with Syringomyelia.
He grew up in Kansas City, Mo., and attended Westport High School. He married Katherine Kerr of Parker.
Mr. Dick was a member of Local 782 and was active in Boy Scouts.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Katherine Dick; a son, Stephen Dick of Gardner; a daughter, Karen Pattison of Overland Park; a brother, Larry Dick of Emporia; and three granddaughters.
The funeral Mass was Tuesday in the Church of the Ascension in Overland Park. Graveside services were held in Goodrich Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.

Kathryn Ann Sexton
(July 12, 1926 - Nov. 27, 2001)
Kathryn Ann Sexton, 75, Reno, Nev., a native of Osawatomie, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, in Washoe Medical Center in Reno.
She was born July 12, 1926, in Osawatomie, the only child of William Arthur and Grace Loree Lane Gibson. She was raised by her grandparents, Peter E. and Alice A. Gibson of Osawatomie. She was a 1944 graduate of Osawatomie High School.
She and Wayne Keith Springer were married July 17, 1946, in Osawatomie. They became the parents of four children. They were later divorced.
Survivors include her present husband of Nevada; her children, Maryann Proctor of Lake Oswego, Ore., William Springer of Fullerton, Calif., Melissa Robards of Spanish Springs, Nev., and Patricia Duval of Irvine, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her former husband, Wayne Springer of California.
A memorial service was held Jan. 5 in Walton's Sierra Chapel in Reno. Burial was in the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery
in Fernley, Nev.

Edith Heilman Hill
(Oct. 19, 1910 - Jan. 28, 2002)
Edith Heilman Hill, 91, Colony, Kan., a native of Pleasanton, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in the Allen County Hospital in Iola.
She was born Oct. 19, 1910, in Pleasanton, a daughter of Sherman Wheeler and Mary Belle Lauck Heilman. She was a 1939 graduate of Colony High School. She then worked as a secretary for the probate judge in Garden City, Kan. Later, following a childhood dream, she lived and worked in the Kansas City area, Seattle, Wash., and San Francisco, Calif.
She and Charles Harold Hill were married June 28, 1947, in Independence, Kan. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hill was a member of the Colony Christian Church, which she joined during her high school years. She was a past member of the Kennsington-Priscilla Club of the Colony area and the Christian Women's Council.
Her hobbies were sewing and crocheting and she loved to visit her twin sister, Esther.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Sutterby of Mapleton, Kan., and Shirley Bell of Blairsville, Ga.; her twin sister, Esther Murphy of Colony, and another sister, Mary Heilman of Los Angeles, Calif.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
Services were Thursday in the Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Colony, followed by burial in the Colony Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the church of the Arthritis Foundation in care of the funeral home.
Alice Lyon
(July 1, 1909 - Jan. 26, 2002)
Alice Lyon, 92, Mound City, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in Country View Nursing Home in Prescott.
She was born July 1, 1909, in Stilwell, the oldest of the 10 children of Charles and Lucy Hiatt Pedigo.
She and Bill Lyon of Olathe were married March 31, 1935. They lived in the Kansas City area until moving to a farm near Mound City in 1946. In addition to being a homemaker, she was involved with farm activities and was an accomplished cook and seamstress.
After her family was raised, she made many quilts for her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Mr. Lyon suffered a stroke in the spring of 1963. They sold their farm in 1964 and moved into Mound City. Mr. Lyon preceded her in death in September 1973.
The family joined the United Methodist Church of Mound City in 1947. Mrs. Lyon continued to be active in the church for more than 50 years, serving for 22 years as treasurer of United Methodist Women. She had been an active member of the Sunshine Community Club, Mound City Parent-Teacher Association and a home demonstration unit.
Others preceding her in death included four brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include a son, George Lyon of Lee's Summit, Mo.; two daughters, Jean Vaughn of Prescott, and Charlene Culver of Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters, Grace White of Blue Springs, Mo., and Helen Kraas and Barbara Keister, both of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday in the church. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery
in Mound City. Arrangements were under the direction of Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City.
Memorials may be made to Country View Nursing Home.
Gerald Lynn Walters
(May 5, 1928 - Jan. 21, 2002)
Gerald Lynn Walters, 73, Tonganoxie, a longtime Paola resident, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, in the Tonganoxie Nursing Center.
He was born May 5, 1928, in Paola, a son of Herbert William and Mary Evelyn McColly Walters. He attended Paola High School, where he earned his nickname of "Stubby."
His ambition was to be a paratrooper and he realized that goal when he joined the U.S. Army in 1946 and later served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. He served with the U.S. Army National Guard in Paola for several years after his discharge.
He and Eva Rae Stanchfield of Paola were married in 1949 in Bentonville, Ark. They raised three children, Dona, Christie and Gary, in Paola. They were later divorced.
Mr. Walters started working for Carrothers Construction Co. of Paola in 1956. He transferred to Pemco Inc., a subsidiary of Carrothers, in 1961. He retired in 1993 as an equipment superintendent with 38 years of service. During that time he had driven more than a million miles in a number of states including Kentucky, Louisiana, Colorado, Indiana and Wyoming.
He and Gladys Sparks Thompson of Tonganoxie were married in 1993. They traveled and spent most of their winters in Texas.
Mr. Walters played baseball with the Paola Indians in the 1950s. He also participated in a bowling league, coached baseball, played softball, fished, danced, gardened, played pool and repaired small motors. He was a former leader and teacher in the Willow Branch 4-H Club.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Walters of the home; two daughters, Dona Walters Boley of Kansas City, Mo., and Christie Walters Doherty of Paola; a son, Gary Walters of St. Louis, Mo.; a stepson, Glen Thompson; two stepdaughters, Mildred Sparks and Pamela Thompson Carter; two sisters, Dorothy Porter of Liberty, Mo., and Eileen Stevens of Kansas City, Mo.; three brothers, Paul Walters and Delbert Walters, both of Paola, and Roger Walters of Lebo, Kan.; two grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.
Services were Friday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola. Private burial wasP in Paola Cemetery.

Harold E. Hanser
(Feb. 2, 1916 - Jan. 24,2 002)
Harold E. Hanser, 85, longtime Paola resident, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in his home.
He was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Louisburg, the son of August J. and Mae Ellis Hanser. The family moved to Drexel, Mo., when he was a child. They later moved to Olathe where he attended Olathe High School.
He and Marjorie Boehm were married Feb. 20, 1946, in St. Paul's Catholic Church in Olathe. They became the parents of three children. They lived in Lenexa before making their home on a dairy farm near Spring Hill. They lived on the farm for 22 years before moving to Paola in 1972.
Mr. Hanser worked at Taylor Forge Engineered Systems in Paola before retiring. He was a member of the Boilermakers Union.
His other memberships included the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Paola and Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed playing cards, dancing and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was known as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and a caring individual.
A daughter, Linda McClanahan, and a brother, Carl Hanser, were among those preceding him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Marjorie Hanser of the home; a son, John Hanser of Spring Hill; a daughter, Joyce Shipley of Hillsdale; a brother, Vern Hanser of Olathe; two sisters, Helen Rhea of Paola and Beverly Kyle of Wamego, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral Mass was Saturday in the church and burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery
near Paola.
