Tara Patterson
Tara Louise Patterson, 23, of Winfield, died Oct. 10, 2002, in a car accident in rural Cowley County.
Services were at 11 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Duncanville, Texas. The Revs. Dan Hoke and Gene Welborn officiated.
Contributions may be made to the Tara Patterson Memorial Fund for the women's basketball program at Southwestern College through the development office, c/o Paul Bean, 100 College, Winfield, KS 67156.
David Clayton & Sons Funeral Home, Duncanville, Texas, was in charge of arrangements.
Patterson was born May 9, 1979, in Grand Prairie, Texas. She graduated from Grand Prairie High School and from Southwestern College in May 2002. At Southwestern she was twice named an all-conference basketball star.
She was currently an assistant basketball coach at Cowley County Community College.
Survivors include her father, Timothy Patterson; her mother, Laura Patterson; her stepmother, Holly Patterson; two brothers, Patrick Patterson and Randy Patterson; a sister, Macie Patterson; and her grandparents, Harvey and Charlene Patterson, Martha Maynard and Tom and Marilynn Taylor.
Paul Branine
ATTICA – Paul K. Branine, 51, of Attica, died Oct. 16, 2002, at his home following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Attica Christian Church. The Revs. Paul Banister and L. Fred Houston will officiate. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Hope Cemetery, Arkansas City.
A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
Elliott Mortuary of Anthony is in charge of arrangements.
Branine was born Jan. 5, 1951, in Arkansas City, to Duana J. (Boswell) and Ned W. Branine.
On Sept. 30, 1995, he married Belinda Woods in Attica.
Branine worked in the parts department of R&A Construction in Wichita.
Survivors include his wife, Belinda Branine, Attica; a daughter, Michelle Branine, Tulsa; a stepdaughter, Charlotte Madsen, Bartlesville; his parents, Ned and Duana Branine, and two brothers, Tim Branine and Scott Branine, all of Arkansas City; a sister, Lisa Buffum, Winfield; and two grandchildren.
Mary Rush
DOUGLASS – Mary R. Rush, 74, of Douglass, died Oct. 18, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hilyard-Smith Mortuary from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Memorials have been established with the First Baptist Church and the Susan B. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation.
Rush was born April 18, 1928, near Sage, Ark., to Lena Gertrude (Gray) and James Wilkes Cockrill.
On Dec. 12, 1945, she married Otto Rush in Melbourne, Ark.
A resident of Douglass since 1951 and a homemaker, Rush also worked as a waitress at both the Corner Cafe and the Triangle Cafe.
Her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Terry Rush, Douglass; a daughter, Diana McVey, Wichita; three brothers, Douglas V. Cockrill, Newport, Ark., Woodrow Cockrill, Bernie, Mo., and Billy Rex Cockrill, Tuckerman, Ark.; and five grandchildren.
Meryl Davis
ROCK – Meryl P. Davis, 95, lifelong resident of the Rock area, died Oct. 19, 2002, at Lakepoint Nursing Home in El Dorado.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Rock United Methodist Church. The Rev. Riet Stonger will officiate. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home of Douglass is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established with Southwestern College and the Arthritis Foundation.
Davis was born Nov. 25, 1906, in Douglass, to Cordelia (Hall) and Wallace Parsons. She graduated from Douglass High School in 1925 and received a degree in education from Southwestern College in 1941. She taught school in Butler and Cowley counties.
On May 24, 1942, she married F. Rudolph Davis in Winfield. He died in 1988.
Davis was a member of the Rock United Methodist Church and a charter member of Common Cause and the Rock Extension Homemakers Unit.
Survivors include a son, Rusty Davis, El Dorado; a daughter, Ann Davis, Johnson; a sister, Tadley Brogden, Wichita; two stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Dorothy Brown
Dorothy L. Brown, 86, of Winfield, formerly of West Plains, Mo., retired salesperson, motel manager and homemaker, died Oct. 18, 2002.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in West Plains. Robertson-Drago Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Her husband, Harry O. Brown, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Tom Brown, Udall, and Bob Brown, Albuquerque, N.M.; two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.
Billy Webb
ARKANSAS CITY – Billy J. Webb, 69, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 20, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
The Rosary will be recited tonight at 7 and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Webb was born May 20, 1933, in Pyatt, Ark., to Amy E. (Richardson) and James E. Webb. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1950.
On Dec. 23, 1955, he married Lois A. James in Clinton, Ill.
Webb worked as a machinist for Borge Warner in Illinois before moving to Arkansas City in 1959. He then worked for Ranney Davis, Santa Fe Railroad, Boeing and General Electric before retiring in 1973.
Webb was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a former grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, a past commander of American Legion Shelton Beaty Post 18 and a life member of Spencer Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Webb, Arkansas City; three sons, Mike Webb and Galen Webb, both of Arkansas City, and Kirt Webb, Leroy; a daughter, Jenny Roy, Victorville, Calif.; a brother, Michael D. Webb, Arkansas City; two sisters, Betty Lewis, Quitman, Ark., and Nancy Charatte, Mars Hill, N.C.; and 10 grandchildren.
Vetta Ingram
Vetta Ingram, 86, of Good Samaritan Village, Winfield, died there Oct. 22, 2002.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.
Ingram was born Aug. 21, 1916, in Ozark County, Mo., to Odessa “Dessie” (Osburn) and Elijah Friend.
In 1931 she married Herbert Ingram in Missouri. He died Nov. 22, 1993.
Ingram worked as a cook in Theodosia, Mo., and for the Lutie, Mo., schools.
She was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Roy Ingram, Sheboygan, Wis., Ray Ingram, Gainesville, Mo., and Larry Ingram, Winfield; two daughters, Verna McGarrah and Netta Schofield, both of Wichita; a brother, Junior Friend, Isabella, Mo.; two sisters, Nellie Chisholm, Gainesville, Mo., and Bobbie Friend, Isabella, Mo.; 17 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Doris Ponds
ARKANSAS CITY – Doris Juanita Ponds, 76, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 21, 2002, at Medicalodge East.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. James Watson will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6 to 8.
Ponds was born Oct. 15, 1926, in Luther, Okla., to Gertha Juanita (Jones) and Thomas Norris Graves. She attended schools in Luther and Crescent, Okla., and graduated from Wewoka Douglas High School. She continued her education at Livingston University in Oklahoma.
On Aug. 14, 1964, she married Sylvester J. Ponds.
She had been a mental health technician at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. After receiving a bachelor's degree in sociology from Southwestern College, she became a social worker at the state hospital. She was later a social worker for juvenile homes in Arkansas City.
Ponds was a member of the Church of God in Christ in Arkansas City and the auxiliaries of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, where she held offices and was past president. She was also past president and vice president of the District 3 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Le Chapeau of Salon 321 8ET 40 of the American Legion Auxiliary, past president of the Kansas Association of Colored Women's and Girls' Clubs and past director of the Wichita Association of Colored Women's and Girls' Clubs.
She was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Order of Eastern Star, the Arkansas City Human Relations Board, the Arkansas City Area Council on Aging, the American Red Cross and Business & Professional Women. She was a Campfire Girls leader and a member of the Crescent, Douglas and Wewoka alumni associations.
Survivors include her husband, Sylvester Ponds, Wichita; her daughter, Tycene P. Edd, Bedminster, N.J.; and her sisters, Gertha Jean Morris, Arkansas City, and Francis M. “Wanda” Irvy, Oklahoma City.
Opal Clark
HOWARD – Florence Opal Clark, 101, homemaker and longtime resident of Howard, died Oct. 18, 2002, at Howard Twilight Manor.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Howard United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Clark was born July 19, 1901, on a farm west of Howard, to Arminta (Maloney) and John Edward Barnaby.
She attended rural Elk County schools and graduated from Howard High School. After completing normal training, she taught in rural schools during the late 1920s and early 1930s.
She married Glenn M. Spencer, and they made their home in Howard. He died Feb. 24, 1957.
On May 24, 1958, she married Archie Burton Clark in Garnett. He died Oct. 26, 1987.
Clark lived in Phoenix briefly but lived in Elk County most of her life. She was a longtime member of the Howard United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a stepson, Charles Clark, Del Mar, Calif.; and seven stepgrandchildren.
