Bertha Paton
WICHITA – Bertha I. Paton, 94, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 8, 2002, at Colwich Health Care Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Union Cemetery
at Winfield.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ward Jordan
Services for Ward Jordan were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 5, 2002, in the Winfield State Hospital & Training Center Cemetery. The staff and friends of Creative Community Living officiated.
Music included “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” and “Amazing Grace.”
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Michael Williams
EDMOND, Okla. – Michael Taylor Williams, 39, of Edmond, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 2, 2002, at his home after a two-year battle with cancer.
The Mike Williams Memorial Fund has been established for his children's college education. Checks may be sent in care of Memorial Road Church of Christ, 2221 E. Memorial Road, Oklahoma City, OK 73136, or Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly, Edmond, OK 73013.
Williams was born March 15, 1963, in Winfield, to Marilyn and Bill Williams. The family moved to Hutchinson where he grew up and graduated from Buhler High School in 1981. He graduated from Oklahoma Christian College in 1986.
In 1985 he married Kerri Eggleston of Hutchinson.
Williams worked for Freeman Moving and Storage.
A member of Memorial Road Church of Christ, he was involved in many activities and ministries.
Survivors include his wife, Kerri Williams, and three children, Taylor Williams, Todd Williams and Emily Williams, all of Edmond; his parents, Bill and Marilyn Williams, Hutchinson; two sisters, Lora Le Rawlins, Hutchinson, and Martha Campbell, Dallas.
Roy Mitchell
Services for Roy W. Mitchell were held at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10, 2002, in Union Cemetery. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated.
Music included “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In the Garden.”
Honorary casket bearers were Darren Evans and Brandon S. Evans.
Casket bearers were Chad Mitchell, Todd Smith, Jeff Snipes, Larry Lambert, Troy Lambert, Kent Lambert and Brent Laude.
A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church.

Wilma Minor-Tipton
DEXTER – Wilma Jane Minor-Tipton, 70, of Dexter, died Sept. 9, 2002, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Dexter Christian Church. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Minor-Tipton was born Jan. 3, 1932, in Potosi, Mo., to Ethel (Gough) and George William Bray. She was raised and educated in Potosi where she graduated from high school.
In 1952 she married Ted Minor in Potosi. They made their home in Kansas City, Mo., for many years before moving to Dexter in 1979. She worked for Cessna Aircraft and then as a nurse's aide at Grouse Valley Manor.
Her husband died in 1988. In December 1990 she moved to Humansville, Mo., to be near her family.
In 1994 she married Leon Tipton in Elton, Mo. They made their home in Humansville where she worked at Faultless Factory. Mr. Tipton died in 2001.
Just recently Minor-Tipton moved back to Dexter to live at Grouse Valley Manor.
She attended Dexter Christian Church and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Flemington, Mo., for a number of years.
Survivors include three sons, Dan Minor, Dexter, Terry Minor, Gun City, Mo., and Ken Minor, Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Diedre Franks, Miami, Okla.; two sisters, Lena Northcutt and Frances Helms, both of Solomon, Mo.; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Leon Coon
E. Leon “Shorty” Coon, 63, lifetime resident of Winfield, died Sept. 10, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 Thursday evening. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 8.
Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and the Hemophilia Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Coon was born Oct. 4, 1938, in Winfield, to Evelyn (Wood) and Freddie Earl Coon. He was raised and educated in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1956.
As a young man, he worked at 15th St. Grocery.
On Nov. 22, 1956, he married Velma Hensley. They later divorced.
Coon was employed by Snodgrass and Funk Construction until 1962 when he became a partner in Coon Construction Co. Then in 1972 he became owner of Coon Concrete Co. In 1979 he became sole owner of Leon Coon Concrete Co. Coon was a general contractor in the building of Gott Manufacturing, Renn Memorial Library, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Broadway Sports Complex, the airport terminal and numerous other projects.
Coon also graduated from Wichita Drafting College and was a licensed Realtor.
On April 13, 2000, he married Alena Smith, and they made their home in Winfield.
Coon was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dexter.
Survivors include his wife, Alena Coon, and two sons, Craig Coon and Kevin Coon, all of Winfield; four daughters, Veronia Coon Benton, Winfield, Tina Burton, Bay St. Louis, Miss., and Tammy Burton and Lesley Heater, both of Arkansas City; a brother, Kenneth Lee Coon, Temple, Texas; and 10 grandchildren.
Mildred Richards
NEWTON – Mildred D. Richards, 86, of Newton, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 9, 2002, at Newton Medical Center.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, 12100 E. 13th, Wichita. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, 1200 N. Boyd, Newton. The Rev. Don Swender will officiate.
Friends may call at Petersen Funeral Home from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials have been established with Friendly Acres and United Methodist Youthville. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Richards was born Oct. 5, 1915, in Radium, to Georgia Tennessee (Waters) and Herbert Chilson Durant. She graduated from East High School in Wichita and attended Friends University.
On Oct. 6, 1940, she married the Rev. George W. Richards in Wichita. They lived in Winfield while he served as pastor at the First United Methodist Church from 1955 to 1958.
He died Jan. 9, 1989.
Richards was a member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church where she belonged to Lydia Circle and Bridge Builders Sunday school class. She was also active in the life enrichment program at Bethel College.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Richards and Tim Richards, and a daughter, Marian Stubbs, all of Newton; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Bertha Paton

Paton was born Sept. 6, 1908, in Cedar Vale, to Florence (Boone) and Robert Webb. She was raised and educated in the Winfield and Arkansas City area.
She obtained a bachelor's degree in education from Southwestern College and a master's degree from Colorado State University in Greeley.
In 1932 she married Fred Paton. He died in 1981.
Paton taught elementary school in rural Winfield until 1954 when she moved to Wichita. She taught in Wichita schools until her retirement in 1974.
Survivors include a son, Robert W. Paton, Conroe, Texas; two daughters, Maxine Swart, Wichita, and Mary Margaret Callahan, San Bernardino, Calif.; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Leon Coon
Services for E. Leon “Shorty” Coon were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 13, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery.
Music included “Amazing Grace” and “Farewell,” performed by Charles Rowley, “I Did It My Way,” performed by Frank Sinatra, and “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” performed by Vince Gill.
Honorary casket bearers were family and friends of Winfield Post 3544 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Casket bearers were Austin Benton, Curtiss Coon, Paul Coon, J.R. Fitzpatrick, Cathi (Coon) Green, Candi (Coon) Hitt, Aaron Mayfield, Alan Moore and Eric Moore.
Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and the Hemophilia Foundation.
George Love
DEXTER – H. George Love, 63, lifetime resident of Dexter, died Sept. 12, 2002, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Dexter Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 8.
A memorial has been established with the Dexter Volunteer Fire Department. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Love was born Sept. 16, 1938, in Dexter, to Maxine (Waldroupe) and Thomas Love. He was raised and educated in Dexter where he graduated from high school in 1956. As a young man he helped his father in the oil fields.
On Jan. 14, 1960, he married Marilyn Glass in Dexter. They made their home in Dexter for over 40 years.
Love was employed with a hay hauling crew for several years and later worked at the Motor Inn in Dexter. He also worked for Firestone, Binney & Smith and the state highway department. In 1966 he began employment at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center where he served 30 years before retiring in 1996.
Love was a member of the former United Methodist Church of Dexter.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Love, Dexter; two sons, Doug Love and Brian Love, both of Winfield; two sisters, Arlene Seeliger, Burden, and Diane Blevins, Waukesha, Wis.; his stepfather, A.G. “Junior” Hoyt, Dexter; and five grandchildren.
