Larry Peterson
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Dr. Larry J. Peterson, 60, of Columbus, oral surgeon and professor in Ohio State University's Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, died Aug. 7, 2002, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky., from complications following a liver transplant.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church at Mill Run, 3500 Mill Run Drive. Pastor William Hartfelder will officiate. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service. Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or a local hospice organization. The family also asks people to become organ donors.
Peterson was raised in Winfield. He attended dental school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and did his oral surgery training at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Since 1999 he had been in private practice with Oral and Facial Surgeons in Dublin, Ohio, and continued to teach part time.
He was editor of two texts, one used widely at dental schools throughout the world and one a reference for specialists. He was also editor-in-chief for a national professional journal.
Peterson was an international lecturer as well, with special clinical interest in management and prevention of infections and surgical techniques related to dental implants.
He was the recipient of numerous awards and honors during his career.
Peterson was a member of Advent Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kit M. Foreman, a son, Tucker Peterson, and two daughters, Brie Morales and K. Rian Foreman, all of Columbus; his mother, Virginia Peterson, Winfield; a sister, Mary Jones, Camano Island, Wash; and two granddaughters.
Ruth Thomas
ROCK – Ruth A. Thomas, 88, longtime resident of Rock, died Aug. 10, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Stalter Cemetery
near Rock.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Thomas was born Sept. 13, 1913, in Chapman, to Mary (Gfeller) and Conrad Altwegg. She was raised and educated in Chapman. As a young woman, she cared for children and did housework for families.
In 1936 she married Emerson Urie Thomas. They lived in Chapman briefly before moving to their farm east of Rock. Her husband died Dec. 1, 1985. She then moved to town and in 1997 moved to Good Samaritan Village.
Thomas was a member of Rock Christian Church and the Rock Senior Citizens.
A daughter, Dorothy Polk, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son, Jim Thomas, Rock; her daughter, Donna Watters, Ward, Ark.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Velda Liermann
Services for Velda M. Liermann were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 12, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ellie Foster officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Marilyn Buffum was the organist. Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer sang “In the Garden” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”
Honorary casket bearers were Todd Andes, Frank Barnett, Kenneth Brothers, Norman Payne, Bill Rowe and Warren Scott.
Casket bearers were Terry Butler, Richard Cook, Clint Liermann, George Dwain Liermann, Brett Rackleff and Bruce Ranger.
Memorials have been established with the National Parkinson's Disease Foundation and Tisdale United Methodist Church.
Robert Saar
Services for Robert C. “Bob” Saar were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 13, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Stephen Rankin officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Dr. James Schuppener sang “It Is Well With My Soul” and “Hymn of Promise.” Carolyn Eastman was the organist.
Interment rites were conducted by Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
Honorary casket bearers were Saar's nieces and nephews, Joan Long, Terry McKnight, Dan Olinger, Deanie Olinger, Doug Olinger, Kenneth Patterson and Wayne Rush.
Casket bearers were Jim Bowman, Dale Fruits, Byron Jones, Fred Miller, Ron Mozingo, Alan Rush and Frank Tipton.
Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Hospice Care of Kansas.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Gerald McAlister
MOLINE – Gerald Eugene “G.E.” McAlister, 79, lifelong resident of the Moline and Belknap area, died Aug. 11, 2002, at Elk Manor Nursing Home.
Services were to be at 2 p.m. today at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Pastor Robin Haines officiated. Burial was in Belknap Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Belknap Community Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
McAlister was born June 2, 1923, at Belknap, to Hazel Dorothy (Chase) and Johnnie Sheridan McAlister. He attended Belknap Grade School and graduated from Moline High School in 1941.
On Feb. 12, 1942, he married Betty Lorene Ward in Sedan. They resided on the Patton Ranch for 52 years.
McAlister served as president of the Sedan Roundup Club from 1956 to 1967 and again in 1971. He was a barrier flagman at the Moline Rodeo and was known for his calf- and team-roping abilities with his partner, Orie Brown.
In addition to raising cattle, he raised sheep and hogs for several years. He also worked in the oil fields until he broke his hip in 2001 and moved to Elk Manor.
His wife, Betty McAlister, and an infant son, Royce Eugene McAlister, preceded him in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Connie Hey and Sharlyn McAlister, both of Moline; a sister, Mable Kinnamon, Louisburg; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Thelma Hollowell
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Thelma Anita Hollowell, 97, of Jacksonville, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 4, 2002, at Passavant Area Hospital.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 8 in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Cody & Son Memorial Home was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Congregational Church or to NBA Barton W. Stone Christian Home.
Hollowell was born Aug. 18, 1904, near Temple, Okla., Indian Territory, to Mary Jane (Abbott) and John H. Jemison. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1923 and from Pittsburg State Teachers College in 1928. She did graduate work at Western Illinois University, MacMurray College and the University of Wisconsin.
On June 7, 1931, she married John Macy Hollowell in Jacksonville. He died Nov. 4, 1988.
Hollowell taught in rural Kansas schools for three years and in high schools in Carl Junction, Mo., and Basin, Wyo. After her marriage, she taught in Jacksonville from 1941 to 1968.
She was a charter member of Chapter EI of P.E.O. and a member of the Congregational Church since 1932. She taught Sunday school and was in various church groups. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, a garden club, the American Association of Retired Persons and a bridge club.
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Lee Ottinger, Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Glenn Ward, Winfield; and a granddaughter.
Ruth Thomas
ROCK – Services for Ruth A. Thomas were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 14, 2002, in Stalter Cemetery
at Rock. The Rev. Ken Davidson officiated. “The Old Rugged Cross” was the music selection.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Charolette Elliott
CEDAR VALE – Charolette U. Elliott, 99, of Cedar Vale Nursing Center, died Aug. 13, 2002, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wheeler Funeral Home with burial in Belknap Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.
A memorial has been established with Cedar Vale High School for a scholarship in her name. Contributions may be sent to the school or Wheeler Funeral Home, Cedar Vale, KS 67024.
Elliott was born June 8, 1903, at Leeds, to Ollie (Burdette) and James A. Elliott. She attended rural schools and graduated from Cedar Vale High School. She also attended Pittsburg, Emporia and Oklahoma state universities and completed her undergraduate degree.
Elliott taught in rural Chautauqua County schools, Shiloh, Ross City, Rexford and Corcoron, Calif. She moved to rural Wauneta in 1968 and later moved to Caney.
Elliott was a member of teachers organizations, Round Mound Extension Homemaker Unit, Belknap Methodist Church and the Wauneta and Caney United Methodist churches.
Survivors include a sister, Irene Pritchard Oakes, Arcadia, Calif.
Vera Pack
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Vera Elizabeth Pack, 82, formerly of Winfield, Dexter and Cambridge, died July 23, 2002, while visiting her daughter in Washington, D.C.
A memorial service will be held in Kansas in October.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Pack was born Dec. 9, 1919, near Dexter to Guy H. and Birdie (Graham) Harris. She grew up in Dexter and Cambridge and lived for many years in Winfield and Kansas City, Mo. In recent years she had lived with a son in San Francisco.
Her husband, Nolan L. Pack, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her children, Nola Klamberg and Gary, Larry and Terry Pack; a sister, Geneva Todd; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Maurine Prater
ARKANSAS CITY – Maurine Katherine Prater, 78, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 14, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Steve Chambers will officiate.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas.
Prater was born Sept. 24, 1923, at Webb City, Okla., to Leroy and Beulah (McCoin) Brown. She was raised in Webb City and graduated from high school there in 1941.
On Jan. 28, 1941, she married Harvey Ralph Prater in Sedan. They resided on various Army bases before moving to Winfield. Prater was employed at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center as a laundry aide for many years.
She attended Central Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald Prater, San Antonio, Texas, and David Prater, Arkansas City; two daughters, Beatrice Baker, Denison, Texas, and Judith Olmstead, Arkansas City; three brothers, Winford Brown, Sapulpa, Okla., Leonard Brown, Enid, Okla., and Jimmy Brown, Choctaw, Okla.; two sisters, Esther Traham, Erath, La., and Martha Otto, Kent, Wash.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gary Wayne Prater, in 1955 and her husband in 1979.
