Robert Smith
ROCK – Robert L. “Buck” Smith, 89, of Rock, retired Stelbar Ranch foreman, died May 23, 2002, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Douglass Cemetery. The Rev. Riet Stonger will officiate. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home of Douglass is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Udall Recreation Commission or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
Smith was born Nov. 29, 1912, in Furley, to Alice (Blakely) and Lowell Smith.
On July 26, 1936, he married Clara L. Reynolds in Newkirk. They moved from Furley to the Rock area in 1942. She died in 1995. A son, Bobby Smith, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Donnie Smith, and a daughter, Carol Foy, both of Rock; five grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Kathryn Snow
LITTLETON, Colo. – Kathryn L. Snow, 89, of Littleton, formerly of Winfield, died May 21, 2002, at the Johnson Center Nursing Home in Littleton.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may sign a book at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home before the service.
A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association, Rocky Mountain Chapter, 789 Sherman, Denver, CO 80203.
Snow was born Dec. 5, 1911, in Muskogee, Okla., to Elizabeth (Blair) and Edward M. Kope. When she was a young child, the family moved to Winfield. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1929.
Snow was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, William Newton Hospital Auxiliary and Snyder Clinic Auxiliary.
Her husband, Frank Snow, died April 20, 1981. In 1990 she moved to Colorado to be near family.
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Roof, Centennial, Colo.; a brother, Robert Kope, Casper, Wyo.; and a grandson.
Aubrey Harp
ARKANSAS CITY – Aubrey C. Harp, 84, of Arkansas City, died May 23, 2002, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Central Christian Church. The Revs. Steve Chambers and Harry Cunningham will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Central Christian Church.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home Monday from 2 to 4 p.m.
Harp was born Oct. 20, 1917, in Harper, to Maudie Mona (Eatinger) and Clarence W. Harp. He was raised and educated in Arkansas City and graduated from high school in 1935. He later attended Arkansas City Junior College.
On July 22, 1938, he married Lola M. Admire in Blackwell, Okla. They made their home north of Arkansas City. Harp worked as a foundryman for 38 years. He worked at Baird Foundry several years until becoming owner in 1961. After retiring in 1976, he continued to work from his home. He worked for Cessna Aircraft Co. from 1976 to 1981 and also in the family garden.
Harp was a longtime member of Central Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lola Harp, Arkansas City; two sons, Deryl Harp, Golden, Mo., and Gary Harp, Tulsa; two daughters, Cherlynn Hill, Newkirk, and Sharla Jean Holloway, Arkansas City; a sister, LaVon Hart, Albany, Ore.; 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Georgia Purdy
ARKANSAS CITY – Georgia Faye Purdy, 71, of Arkansas City, died May 23, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Riverview Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Leukemia Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Purdy was born June 11, 1930, in Arkansas City, to Hazel F. (Cannon) and George F. Trenary. She was raised and educated in Arkansas City.
On Jan. 16, 1954, she married Harold C. Purdy in Arkansas City where they made their home. Mr. Purdy died on Jan. 4, 2001.
Purdy worked at Mauer Neuer Meat Packing Co. in the bacon department. She was a member of the Rodeo Key Club.
Survivors include five sisters, Mary Wolfe, Fremont, Ohio, Florence Parks, Newkirk, Okla., Jean Rhodes, Lansing, Jo Trenary, Arkansas City, and Rickie Stebens, Wichita; and a brother, James Trenary, Arkansas City.
Bill Rutter
BIXBY, Okla. – Bill R. Rutter, 79, formerly of Belle Plaine and Udall, died May 26, 2002, in Bixby.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Ninnescah Cemetery
south of Udall. Cremation has taken place. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Rutter was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Udall, to Marie and Jim Rutter. He attended Udall schools.
On Oct. 6, 1941, he married Darlene Merrill. For over 20 years they made their home in Belle Plaine where Rutter was an agent for Kansas Gas & Electric.
In 1969 they moved to Grand Lake, Okla., where they owned and operated a mobile home park in Summerfield Hollow. To be closer to family, they moved to Bixby in 1985. They spent their winters in Aransas Pass, Texas, for 15 years.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Rutter, Bixby.; a son, Ruby Rutter, Oklahoma City; two daughters, Connie Jackson, Oklahoma City, and Darbi Outhier, Bixby; a brothers, Neil Rutter, Claremore, Okla.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Kathryn Snow
Services for Kathryn L. Snow were held at 11 a.m. May 28, 2002, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated.
Guitarist Stephen Butler played and sang “Amazing Grace” and “In the Garden.”

Jonie Jene Pitts
OXFORD – Jonie Jene (Phillips) Pitts, 58, of Oxford, died May 27, 2002, at her home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Oxford Christian Church. The Rev. Danny Ginn will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Kingfisher, Okla., cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through Oxford Funeral Service.
Pitts was born Oct. 25, 1943, in Arkansas City, to Valda (Wilhelm) and Tommy O. Phillips. She was raised in the Arkansas City and Newkirk area. In 1957 the family moved to Oxford where she also attended school.
On Dec. 31, 1998, she married Arthur Donald Pitts in Miami, Okla.
She worked as an aide at the Oxford Public Library for several years.
Survivors include her husband, Arthur Pitts, Oxford; a son, Phillip Wimmer, Lebanon, Ore.; three daughters, Ronda Davis, Oxford, Kathryn Wimmer, Portland, Ore., and Heather Hill, Hays; two sisters, Phyllis Hege, Oxford, and Tommy Gay Evans, New Orleans; a stepbrother, David Harned, Dallas; and 10 grandchildren.
Carl McGee
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Carl J. McGee, 85, of Albuquerque, formerly of Bayard, died May 14, 2002.
Services were held May 19 at French Mortuary, Albuquerque.
McGee was born Nov. 3, 1916, in Bayard, to Cordellia and Edward McGee and grew up in Kansas. In 1943 he and his twin brother, Charles, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II.
In 1949 McGee moved to New Mexico where he worked on the Route 66 project.
A son, William McGee, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Linda McGee, Albuquerque; four sons, Charley McGee, Scott Turner and Steven Turner, all of Albuquerque, and Carl McGee, Colorado; a sister, Christa McGee Holloway, Winfield; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Ella Fry
WICHITA – Ella M. Fry, 80, of Wichita, retired Beech Aircraft hand form alignment employee, died May 30, 2002, in Wichita.
Services and burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Resthaven Mortuary and Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Young was born March 22, 1922, in El Centro, Calif., to Alice and Asa Clifton Harding.
She married Ansel B. Fry on Dec. 6, 1941. Both were Beech Aircraft employees for many years until their retirement in 1985. He died Dec. 14, 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Simmons, Winfield; two brothers, Kenneth L. Harding, Niland, Calif., and Bobby G. Harding, Winfield; a sister, Roxie DeLong, Derby; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Clara Young
OXFORD – Clara Francis Young, 90, of Oxford, died May 29, 2002, at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Oxford Funeral Service. The Rev. L. Ray Young will officiate. Queen City Chapter 138 Order of Eastern Star of Winfield will conduct special rites. Burial will be in Conway Springs Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The family will receive visitors between 2 and 4 on Sunday.
A memorial has been established with Riverview Manor in Oxford. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Young was born Jan. 31, 1912, in Arkansas City, to Ida (Cunningham) and William Swinehart.
A licensed practical nurse, she worked at Cedar View Nursing Home in Wellington and Riverview Manor in Oxford.
She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, now Maple Street Baptist Church, in Oxford and Queen City Chapter 138 Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include two sons, L. Ray Young, Newton, and James E. Young, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; two daughters, Virgie Young, Winfield, and Norma Lee Hall, Livingston, Texas; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Alberta Schoen
Alberta M. Schoen, 84, of Winfield, died May 31, 2002, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Rick Hathaway will officiate. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery
in Concordia at 3 p.m. Pastor Evey Phillips will officiate.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Schoen was born Sept. 29, 1917, on a farm north of Downs, to Grace H. (Bunger) and Albert Hermann Schoen. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Downs. She attended a country grade school, graduated from Lebanon High School and attended Emporia College. Schoen taught rural school for eight years and later did substitute teaching.
On Oct. 11, 1942, she married Dale K. Lerew and they lived in Portis. He died on July 23, 1962. She worked in the Ports post office and for Western Light and Telephone and West Plains Energy.
On Aug. 21, 1965, she married Arnold A. Schoen in Sylvan Grove. In November 1965 they moved from Portis to Concordia where she continued to work for the utility company until she retired in 1982. Her husband died on Nov. 17, 1988.
Survivors include five stepchildren, Eunice Borman, Winfield, Richard Schoen, Sylvan Grove, Geraldine Spicka, Las Cruces, N.M., James Schoen, Manhattan, and Sharon Glenn, Shell Knob, Mo.; two sisters, Iva L. Koester, Longmont, Colo., and Pauline G. VanderWeyden, Denver, Colo.; 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
