Gordon Williams
ARKANSAS CITY – Gordon Paul Williams, 68, of Arkansas City, died April 24, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Brothers Jackie Vogele and Ronald Reed will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and the Purdue House in Wichita. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Williams was born April 26, 1933, in Maysville, Okla., to Faye A. (Brown) and Henry Ranie Williams. He was raised and educated in Collinsville, Okla., and served in the National Guard before being called to active duty with the U.S. Army in 1950.
On Nov. 27, 1950, he married Alyce Maude Wenner in Tulsa, Okla. They moved to Arkansas City in 1963.
Williams worked as a machinist, including 10 years at the General Electric Jet Engine Maintenance Facility at Strother Field. He was also co-owner of WNW Mowing Service for 14 years.
Williams was a member of Blessing Heights Church of God before transferring his membership to the New Hope Assembly of God Church. He was also a member of the International Union of Electricians Local 1004.
Survivors include his wife, Alyce Williams, Arkansas City; a son, Guy Ranie Williams, Burden; two daughters, Dana Lynn Williams and Orna Faye Williams, both of Arkansas City; a brother, Joe Henry Williams, Danville, Ill.; nine grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A son, Gordon P. Williams Jr., preceded him in death.
Vickie Mount
Services for Vickie Kay Mount were held at 2 p.m. April 26, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Sheila Ratzlaff officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.
Music included “I Will Remember You” by Sarah McLachlan,” “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack, and “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gill.
Casket bearers were Ron Cannon, Mark Eastman, Joe Haggard, Don Land, Steve Otto and Darrell Webber.
Memorial contributions may be made to a scholarship at Central of Burden High School and the Burden Rural Fire Department.
Alta Findley
PARSONS – Alta M. Findley, 91, of Parsons, formerly of Atlanta and Winfield, died April 27, 2002, at Labette County Medical Center, Parsons.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Wachter will officiate.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Patrick's Church through Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home where friends are invited to call.
Findley was born April 7, 1911, in Atlanta, to Rosa May (Wilson) and Charles O. “Ollie” Torbet. She graduated from Pittsburg Beauty College.
She worked as a beautician for a few years, then worked for the Kansas Ordnance Plant in Pittsburg. In the late 1940s she moved to Winfield where she worked at a hospital.
In Winfield she met Mark Findley. They were married July 12, 1951, in Pueblo, Colo., and lived in Dodge City, Garden City and Larned before moving to Parsons in 1952. He died Jan. 2, 1987.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Findley, Parsons, a stepson, John Findley, Winfield; three stepgranddaughters and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Roy Coffey
ARKANSAS CITY – Roy E. Coffey, 75, of Arkansas City, died April 26, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Lance Carrithers will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Coffey was born Aug. 5, 1926, in Waurika, Okla., to Myrtle Ruth (Fraysher) and Hillery Newton Coffey. He was raised in Oklahoma and graduated from Terral High School in 1944.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army.
On July 21, 1949, he married Lillie Mae Tanner in Terral. They made their home in Borger, Texas, Pampa, Texas, Hays, Harper, Pratt, Great Bend, Perry, Iowa, and finally Arkansas City in 1975. Coffey worked as a field supervisor for Halliburton Services Inc.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Cosmos Lodge 278 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Kiowa and Moose Lodge 1586 of Arkansas City.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie Coffey, Arkansas City; a son, Roy P. Coffey, Carmel, Ind.; a daughter, Cheryl Haimann, Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Brunetta Stewart, Pampa, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Bill VanSchuyver
WICHITA – Billy Joe “Bill” VanSchuyver, 75, of Wichita, formerly of Arkansas City, died April 26, 2002, at his residence.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. The Rev. Jesse Kindred will officiate. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
VanSchuyver was born Feb. 23, 1927, in Wanette, Okla., to Eura (Perrin) and Millard VanSchuyver. He was raised and educated in Wanette.
From 1945 to 1947 he served with the U.S. Army occupation forces in Austria.
In 1948 he married Barbara Louise Farley. They made their home in Arkansas City where he began his career with Rodeo Meats, working in the ham and bacon area. He retired as the smoked meats foreman in 1984. In 1989 he retired from the General Electric Jet Engine Maintenance Facility.
In 1996 he moved to Wichita to be closer to family.
VanSchuyver was a member of Spencer-Ralston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254.
Survivors include two daughters, Debra Hoepner and Janie Spoon, both of Wichita; a son, Neal VanSchuyver, Texas; three brothers, Doyle VanSchuyver, Ponca City, Robert VanSchuyver, Canton, Ohio, and David VanSchuyver, Kingston, Okla.; a sister, Sue Goodnight, St. Louis, Okla.; and three grandchildren.
Peggy Murray
EUREKA – Peggy Eleanor Murray, 75, of Eureka, formerly of Wichita, died April 27, 2002, at Greenwood County Hospital, Eureka.
Services will be at 2 p.m Tuesday at Antioch Christian Church, Wichita. Pastor John King will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Wichita.
A memorial has been established with the Sunflower Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.
Murray was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Emporia, to Lena Faye (Smith) and Clifford Robert Graves. She spent her early childhood in St. Joseph, Mo., and Emporia, then moved to Anthony where she graduated from high school in 1945.
On July 27, 1948, she married Eugene Ross Murray in Anthony. They lived in Wichita where she was a homemaker. Murray was a member of University United Methodist Church for many years and took part in a weekly Bible study.
She had been a resident of Eureka Medicalodge for four years.
Survivors include her husband, Eugene Murray, Wichita; a daughter, Roslyn Stewart, Howard; a brother, Robert Graves, Tyler, Texas; and two granddaughters.
Evelyn Comstock
Evelyn Rose Comstock, 78, of Good Samaritan Village, Winfield, died there April 28, 2002.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Round Mound Cemetery, Cedar Vale.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8.
A memorial has been established with the Good Samaritan Village Activities Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Comstock was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Danville, to Sadie Malinda (Hill) and Joseph Arthur Kimberlin. She was raised at Argonia where she attended Lone Star School.
On Feb. 7, 1946, she married Louis Kenneth Comstock Sr. in Hewins. In 1971 they moved to Wellington where she was employed as a dishwasher at Country Acres. In the late 1970s she started selling Avon and later sold Tupperware through the mid-1980s.
Her husband died May 4, 1990. Following his death, she moved to Winfield where she resided at Good Samaritan Village.
Survivors include three sons, Louis K. Comstock Jr., Wellington, Danny Joe Comstock, Cheney, and Tommy Dean Comstock, Wichita; five daughters, Rosella L. Cantrell and Linda J. Bean, both of Winfield, Roberta J. Altum, Wichita, Lavon E. Martin, Hillsboro, and Sharon Kay Bashaw, Newton; a brother, Joseph A. Kimberlin, Wichita; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Donella Jordan
ARKANSAS CITY – Donella J. (Hart) Jordan, 49, of Arkansas City, died April 28, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Jordan was born Sept. 12, 1952, in Burden, to Jane (Manis) and Herbert Hart. She was raised in Burden until the 11th grade when her family moved to Brookings, Ore. She graduated from high school in Oregon, then returned to Kansas. In 1995 she received her associate's degree from Northeastern Oklahoma State University in Miami.
A homemaker, she worked as a certified medical assistant when her daughters were in high school. In 1999 she retired due to failing health.
Survivors include her companion, David Monasmith, Arkansas City; three daughters, Gayla Hubbard, Wichita, Wendy Glahn, address not given, and Tina King, Winfield; her parents, Herbert and Jane Hart, Winfield; a brother, Richard Hart, Eugene Ore.; two sisters, Nancy Ramsey, Winfield, and Carolyn Ireland, Blackwell, Okla.; and four grandchildren.
John Manczuk
John Bron Manczuk, 69, of Winfield, died April 27, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Winfield State Hospital Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 to 11:30 that morning.
A memorial has been established with Creative Community Living. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Manczuk was born Feb. 8, 1933, in Kansas City, Kan., to Clara (Burdolski) and Bron Manczuk. He lived at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center from September 1945 until its closing. On Jan. 15, 1998, he moved into his Creative Community Living home.
Survivors include his guardian, Ruth Gordan, Winfield, and his caregivers, Vickey Walker, Tekeshia Koroma, Ethel Gates, Ava Cheaves, Mark Bailey, Roberta Bileau, Shane Kilpatrick, Colin Barker, Vanessa Schnoor and Kelly Shorter.
