Bill Hill
ARKANSAS CITY – William B. “Bill” Hill, 82, of Arkansas City, died March 1, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Joyce and Danny Daniel officiating. Private burial will be later in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the church's radio ministry and the Cowley County Community College Endowment Association. Contributions made be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Hill was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Billings, Okla., to Frederick W. and Minnie (Orthel) Hill. When he was three, the family moved to Arkansas City where he attended school and graduated from high school in 1938.
Hill attended Arkansas City Junior College for a short time before entering the military during World War II. He served as a pilot in the Pacific Theater and flew the B-25 Mitchell aircraft on many missions. Hill eventually finished his education at Oklahoma State University.
He married Jean Miller March 7, 1948, in Arkansas City. The couple first lived in Oklahoma City, where Hill worked for International Harvester. In 1950, the couple moved to Davenport, Iowa, and lived there for four years before moving back to Arkansas City. He worked for Cosby Robe Insurance Agency and later Union State Bank. He retired as executive vice president of the bank in 1987.
Hill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as an elder, deacon and radio announcer on Sunday mornings. He was a past president of the Lions Club, Rotary Club and Arkansas City Area Chamber of Commerce, which he served as an ambassador.
Hill was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the board of directors of the Cowley County Community College Endowment Association and Head Start and had served on several state banking committees.
He is survived by his wife, of Arkansas City, and a brother, Lee O. Hill, Rogers, Ark.
Calvin Moore
Calvin C. Moore, 77, of Walnut Towers, Winfield, died Feb. 28, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 7 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Winfield Foster Grandparents Program.
Moore was born Nov. 7, 1924, in Oklahoma, to Ethel (Clampett) and Homer Moore. He moved to Winfield when he was a child.
He worked in maintenance for several area restaurants. He then worked as a foster grandparent from 1990 to 2001, first at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center and later at the Winfield Head Start Program.
Moore attended the Evangelical Free Church.
Survivors include a nephew, Robert “Bob” Kelley, Arkansas City, and friends Henry and Mina Eggleston, Winfield.
Lucille Davis
Services for Lucille Berneice Davis were held at 10 a.m. March 1, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Music included recordings of “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” by Tennessee Ernie Ford, “The Old Rugged Cross” by Elvis Presley, and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Willie Nelson.
Honorary casket bearers were Davis' great-grandchildren, Tracy and Kyle Bailey, Corey and Misha Davis, Trent Hanshew and Mallory and Mandy Huntoon.
Casket bearers were Jim Day, Harry Evans, Melvin Ruggles, Lee Roy Russell, John Thomas and Keith Wood.
Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and the Good Samaritan Village Activities Fund.
Dawna Deuschle
ARKANSAS CITY – Dawna Deuschle, 38, of Arkansas City, formerly of Winfield, died March 3, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Cremation has been effected. The family will hold memorial services later. Rindt-Erdman was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with Davita Dialysis of Winfield.
Deuschle was born April 24, 1962, in Los Angeles, to Diann Staton and Donald Payette. She spent most of her life in Arkansas City where she attended school and obtained her General Equivalency Degree in 1983.
On Sept. 30, 1993, she married Michael Deuschle in Winfield where they made their home before moving to Arkansas City in 1999.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Deuschle, and a son, Justin Winters, both of Arkansas City; a daughter, Heather Thurber, Winfield; a stepson, Kenneth Deuschle, Fulda, Minn.; and a stepdaughter, Tasha Deuschle, her mother, Diann Staton, and two sisters, Deena Thurber and Dana Payette, all of Winfield.
Carl Coonrod
Carl Coonrod, 76, of Winfield, former resident of Elk County, died March 4, 2002. He was a retired general contractor and rancher.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at College Hill United Methodist Church in Wichita. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m in Pleasant View Cemetery
near Fort Scott.
Friends may call at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East, Wichita, from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Coonrod was born June 3, 1925, in Bourbon County, to Mary T. (Simpson) and Carl Chester Coonrod.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth L. (Blockcolsky) Coonrod, Winfield; two sons, Carl F. Coonrod, Elk Falls, and Randy Coonrod, Wichita; his stepmother, Beulah Davis, Conway Springs; two sisters, Joyce Coulter, Socorro, N.M., and Rosetta Schemenauer, St. Ignace, Mich.; a half-sister, Kathi Maher-Elier, Arlington, Texas; five grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, two great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Joan Knight
ARKANSAS CITY – Services for Joan Veronica Knight were held at 3 p.m. March 4, 2002, in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Wayne Baker officiated.
Music included “I'll Always Love You” and “Sentimental Journey.”
A memorial has been established with a hospice organization.
Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Betty Blake
ARKANSAS CITY – Betty Jeanne Blake, 80, of Arkansas City, died March 5, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery
in Ponca City.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home until 5 this evening.
Blake was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Wellington, to Martha (Camp) and Carl Spencer.
On Jan. 6, 1945, she married Byron E. Blake in Oklahoma City. In 1954 they moved to Arkansas City where she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Byron Blake, Arkansas City.
Darrell Phillips
Services for Darrell Wayne Phillips were held at 10 a.m March 5, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Buddy Cook officiated. Burial was in Maple City Cemetery.
American Legion Post 18 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254, both of Arkansas City, provided an honor guard and military graveside ceremonies.
Kay Perdaris was the pianist. Lynn Merritt performed “Amazing Grace,” “Beyond the Sunset” and “How Great Thou Art.” Steve Wariner performed “Holes in the Floor of Heaven.”
Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and Hospice Care of Kansas.
Harold DeFore
WICHITA – Harold C. DeFore Sr., 78, of Wichita, formerly of Douglass and Belle Plaine, died March 3, 2002, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.
Services were at 2 p.m. March 6 in Douglass Cemetery. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home, Douglass, was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home, 1220 World War II Drive, Winfield, KS 67156.
DeFore was born Feb. 14, 1924, in Douglass, to Jenny (Bridges) and Charles DeFore. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. He later worked for Boeing Aircraft.
Survivors include two sons, Harold DeFore Jr., Cheney, and Kenneth DeFore, Wichita; two daughters, Brenda Baker, Wichita, and Sally Dick, Wellington; a sister, Mabel Zimmerman, Augusta; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Calvin Moore
Services for Calvin C. Moore were held at 10:30 a.m. March 5, 2002, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Pastor Scott Schaefer officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Kenton and Doyle Wirtz, Charles Blizzard, Henry Eggleston and Terry Triplett.
A memorial has been established with the Foster Grandparents Program, 1321 E. Seventh, Winfield, KS 67156.
Ethel Harris
Services for Ethel Harris were held at 2 p.m. March 6, 2002, at Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Gerald Graber and Don McLain officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
McLain performed “In the Garden” and “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow.” Gwen Lumbert was the pianist.
Casket bearers were Joseph and Michael Alvarez, Jesse and Tyson Long, Dale Phillips and Chris Waggoner.
A memorial has been established with Central Baptist Church.
