Anthony Rausch

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Anthony Dean Rausch, 78, of Kansas City, died Jan. 6, 2002, after a lengthy illness.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Platt Woods Church, 7310 NW Prairie View Road, Kansas City, Mo.

The family requests that instead of flowers or donations, you say a kind word to someone to whom you would not normally speak.

Rausch was born June 9, 1923, in Winfield, to Maude (Kerr) and Anthony John Rausch. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1941.

During World War II, he served in the 13th Airborne. In 1949 he graduated from Southwestern College.

Rausch was a member of the Platt Woods Church, the All Tribes Methodist Church and civic and community organizations, including the Optimist Club, NO Names and Hatebusters.

His wife, Vernice Rausch, and a son, Webster Rausch, preceded him in death.

Survivors include six sons, Terry, Greg, Brad, Kent, Wes and Chris Rausch, all of Kansas City; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Joyce Brothers

HESSTON - Joyce L. Brothers, 75, of Hesston, formerly of Winfield and Halstead, died Jan. 9, 2002, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tisdale United Methodist Church. Private burial will be in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Dallas Curtis will officiate. Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home, McPherson, is in charge of arrangements.

The Joyce Brothers Memorial has been established for the Schowalter Villa Dog Therapy Program.

Brothers was born June 28, 1926, in Winfield, to Marie (Williams) and Harry Farney. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1944.

On Nov. 7, 1948, she married Earl L. Brothers in Winfield. He died Oct. 29, 1993.

A homemaker, she moved from Halstead to Hesston in 2000. She was a member of the Halstead First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a son, Phillip Brothers, Towanda; four daughters, Judy Sartin, Winfield, Sharon Stinemetze, McPherson, Teresa Wilson, Salina, and Cindy McCall, South Attleboro, Mass.; and eight grandchildren.

William Poovey

OXFORD - William Hinckley Poovey, 90, of Oxford, died Jan. 10, 2002, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oxford Funeral Service. Pastor Wayne Handle will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Memorials have been established with Oxford Friendship Meals and Oxford First Responders. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Poovey was born March 8, 1911, near Belle Plaine, to Carolyn (Hinckley) and William Elmer Poovey. He attended Fisher Country Grade School and graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1931.

On July 7, 1956, he married Virginia D. Howard in McPherson.

Poovey worked for Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, Calif., and Oklahoma City and farmed intermittently. After moving to Oxford in the early 1950s, he worked as an aircraft mechanic and supervisor for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita for over 25 years. He retired in 1976, but until 1988 he continued to work summers at the Oxford alfalfa mill and during the winter at Oxford Lumber Co.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Poovey, Oxford; a son, Jerald D. McClain, Goddard; a daughter, Leah Somerville, Winfield; a brother, Boyd Poovey, Oxford; a sister, Necia May Warren, Arkansas City; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Thongsa Srimoungchanh

WICHITA - Thongsa Srimoungchanh, 72, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 9, 2002, at his daughter's residence in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.

Srimoungchanh was born Oct. 15, 1929, in Kangkhok, Laos, to Theuane (Inthasane) and Da Srimoungchanh. He was raised and educated in Laos.

In 1959 he married Kouimanee Lim in Laos where they made their home. Srimoungchanh was a school teacher and principal.

In 1976 the family moved to Hawaii where he became a naturalized citizen. While in Hawaii, he worked in landscaping.

In 1981 they moved to Winfield where he worked as a custodian at the Winfield Public Library. They returned to Hawaii in 1988 but stayed only a short time before returning to Winfield.

Due to his wife's failing health, Srimoungchanh took care of her until she died Sept. 25, 1995.

In 1996 he went to work at Focus Development Center and then at the First Christian Church as a custodian. When his health began to fail, he moved to Wichita to live with his daughter.

Srimoungchanh was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include three sons, Keokouson Srimoungchanh, Winfield, Kongseng Srimoungchanh, Columbia, S.C., and Koulamanee Srimoungchanh, Kansas City, Kan.; four daughters, Phakhaysavanh Syvoravong, Winfield, Sakranee Bennett and Salaphong Srimoungchanh, both of Wichita, and Sackoxayathi La Polt, England; a brother, Song Srimoungchanh; two sisters, Keomy Insienxmay, Michigan, and Soonh Vilaphone, Georgia; and 13 grandchildren.

Thomas Johnson

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - Thomas Leon Johnson, 77, of Broken Arrow, died Jan. 8, 2002, at his home.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Jan. 11 at the First Presbyterian Church in Tulsa. Burial will be at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Camarillo, Calif. Fitzgerald Ivy Chapel of Tulsa was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 2910 Mohawk Blvd., Tulsa, OK 74110, and the American Legion Endowment Fund, c/o American Legion National Headquarters, P.O. Box 1055, Indianapolis, IN 46202.

Johnson was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Winfield, to Margaret Anne (Jenkins) and James P. Johnson of Floral. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy.

Johnson retired as a manager of quality assurance at the Northrop Corp., now Northrop Grumman, in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

He resided in Camarillo, Calif., before moving to Eugene, Ore., in 1989. He moved to Broken Arrow in 1999 following the death of his second wife, Estella Rammell Johnson, whom he married in April 1962.

His first wife, A. Jean (Smith) Johnson, and a son, Richard Johnson, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, a stepson, a stepdaughter, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Jean Gann

Helen Jean Gann, 80, lifelong resident of Cowley County, died Jan. 11, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

In honor of her wishes, a private graveside service will be held.

Memorials have been established with the Memorial Forest at Winfield City Lake and the Arthritis Foundation of Kansas. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Gann was born Sept. 30, 1921, on a farm east of Winfield, to Catherine Arminta (Thirsk) and William Franklin Brown. She was raised east of Winfield in Walnut Township, attended grade school at South Walnut School and graduated from Winfield High School in 1939. After high school she graduated from Vernon School of Cosmetology in Wichita.

On Nov. 30, 1939, she married Lawrence Newton Gann in Wellington. She worked at Boeing Aircraft in the personnel department during World War II. She then worked at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center as a medical secretary. Throughout the years she owned and operated a beauty salon at William Newton Hospital, the Artiste Beauty Salon and Beauty Haven.

In 1972 she and her husband retired and moved to a farm southeast of Winfield. In September 2001 they sold the farm and moved back to Winfield.

Gann was a member of the Business and Professional Women, Kansas Women's Golf Association, Winfield Bowling Association and Winfield Country Club Ladies Golf Association. She went to the state tournament many times.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Gann, Winfield; a son, Larry Gann, Arkansas City; two daughters, Diann Carson, Oxford, and Connie Gottlob, Winfield; a sister, Bonnie Hittle, Winfield; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

William Poovey

OXFORD - William Hinkley Poovey, 90, of Oxford, died Jan. 10, 2002, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.
