Mary Beckwith
Services for Mary Lee Beckwith were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 13, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Music included "Rock of Ages," "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "Peace in the Valley."
Casketbearers were Kent Buttram, Darrell Dean, Keith Flower, Richard Hopper, Bus Jenkins and Dan Warren.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.
Talma Fitzgerald
Services for Talma O. Fitzgerald were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 13, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Julie Shields officiated. Burial was in Atlanta Cemetery.
Music included "In the Garden" and " Just a Closer Walk With Thee."
Casketbearers were Max Endres, Lael Fitzgerald, James Terrill, Ray Walker and Tom and Wayne Williard.
A memorial has been established with the Atlanta United Methodist Church.
Jean Watkins
VASSAR - Jean Lindsay Watkins, 68, of rural Vassar, died Nov. 13, 2001, at her home.
A memorial service was to be held at 2 p.m. today at Grace Episcopal Church, Ottawa. Feltner Funeral Home, Lyndon, was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with Midland Hospice.
Watkins was born July 27, 1933, in Newkirk, Okla., to John Stewart and Mildred Opal (Rouse) Lindsay. She had lived in various cities before moving to rural Vassar in 1988.
She was married to Lee R. Clark for 22 years and married William W. Watkins in 1980 in Wichita. They later divorced.
Watkins was a homemaker, had done clerical work and was a volunteer at the Thrift Store in Ottawa.
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Ottawa.
Survivors include a son, John Clark, Alexander, Ark.; two daughters, Nancy Martinez, Vassar, and Cathy Crane, Winfield; a stepson, Jeff Watkins, Wichita; two stepdaughters, Brenda Muncy, Raymore, Mo., and Paula Wyant, Weott, Calif.; a brother, Alfred Lindsay, Peck; a sister, Opal Stewart, Sterling, Colo.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Bill Fiske
Services for William Henry "Bill" Fiske Jr. were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 14, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Steve Souther officiated. Don Gibson was the organist. Music included "Amazing Grace" and "Just As I Am."
Private burial will be later in Highland Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Edith Morton
Services for Edith M. Morton were held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 13, 2001, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Diane Massey officiated.

Robert Whitehair
ELMO - Robert J. Whitehair, 72, of Elmo, died Nov. 13, 2001, at Salina Regional Health Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Abilene. The Rev. Mark Wesley will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
The Knights of Columbus Rosary will be said at Danner Funeral Home, Abilene, at 6:30 this evening.
A memorial has been established with St. Columba Catholic Church, Elmo. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Whitehair was born March 6, 1929, at Elmo to George and Bertha (Foster) Whitehair. He grew up at Elmo and graduated from Abilene High School in 1946.
On Nov. 8, 1958, he married Mae Wendt. He had farmed for more than 40 years.
Whitehair was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Whitehair, Elmo; a daughter, Cindy Groene, Winfield; three sons, Kent Whitehair, Hope, and Kevin and Kerry Whitehair, both of Abilene; two sisters, Bernadette Hintz, Salina, and Gladys Rogers, Hoxie; and seven grandchildren.
James Cole
James J. Cole, 83, of Walnut Hill Nursing Center, Winfield, died Nov. 15, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be later in National City, Calif.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Cole was born Feb. 5, 1918, at Udall, to Harold and Bertha Mae (Mitchell) Cole. He was raised and educated in the Udall area.
On June 12, 1939, he married Opal Mae Fleming in San Diego. She preceded him in death in January 1968.
Cole served as a chauffeur in the Army during World War II and was also a trained marksman. He was later employed as a foreman for Solar Aircraft in San Diego for 37 years before retiring in 1978.
In 1980 he returned to the Winfield area to help care for his father.
Survivors include a daughter, Elsie Allen, Winfield; two brothers, Wesley Cole, Winfield, and Gilbert Cole, Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Hazel Robinson, Topeka; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A daughter preceded him in death.
Esley Powers
WELLINGTON - Esley Quincy Powers, 86, longtime Cowley County resident, died Nov. 14, 2001, at Cedar View Good Samaritan Center, Wellington.
Viewing and visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Miles Funeral Service. A memorial inurnment service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in New Salem Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Walnut Hill Nursing Center. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Powers was born July 12, 1915, in New Salem, to John E. and Elva Ellen (Lowe) Powers. Reared in the New Salem area, he attended rural schools and began working for area farmers.
In August 1940 he married Martha Love in Newkirk, Okla. The couple resided in Cowley County throughout their marriage. In the 1940s he worked at Boeing Aircraft and later worked in the oil fields until retiring in 1970. His wife died March 7, 1986.
Powers was a member of the Winfield Elks Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his son, John E. Powers, Moore, Okla.; his daughters, Carmen Ankrom and Marcia Powell, both of Winfield; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Bonnie Johnson
WICHITA - Bonnie Jean Johnson, 77, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 14, 2001, at Sandpiper Bay Nursing Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
A memorial has been established with Trinity Hospice Care in Wichita. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Johnson was born Aug. 9, 1924, in Slaton, Texas, to Lota F. and Alta (Summers) Shelburn. The family moved to Arkansas City and then to Winfield where she attended school and graduated from high school in 1942.
During World War II, she worked at Boeing in Wichita. In 1949, she moved to California where she was a waitress in the San Francisco, San Diego and Barstow areas.
In April 1949, she married Hershal G. Johnson in Las Vegas. The couple later divorced.
Johnson returned to Winfield in 1953 and was employed at the Winfield State Hospital as a mental health technician. She retired from there in 1986, following 33 years of service.
She was a member of Millington Street Baptist Church while she lived in Winfield and later attended the General Assembly Church of the Firstborn in Wichita.
Survivors include her daughters, Linda Killman, Atlanta, Glenda Ford, Palisade, Colo., and Belinda Bohnstehn, Wichita; her brother, Frankie Shelburn, and her sister, Leota Cummings, both of Winfield; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
