B.J. Bobbitt
EVANSVILLE, Wyo. - Bobby Jack "B.J." Bobbitt, 70, of Evansville, died Aug. 16, 2001, at the Wyoming Medical Center of lung and bone cancer.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mount Vernon Cemetery
east of Atlanta. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Bobbitt was born June 1, 1931, in Atlanta, to Gladys L. (Ketterman) and Bun O. Bobbitt. He was raised by his guardian parents, Avis and Lawrence Bennett.
From 1951 to 1953 he served in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War.
Bobbitt lived in many western states and worked in oil fields as a drill stem tester. For the last 13 years he had worked for Black Hills Trucking.
In July 1950 he married Katherine Nida in Wichita. She died in 1990.
On March 4, 1995, he married Starlene K. Orchard-Gibson in Elko, Nev.
Bobbitt was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Burden.
A son, Douglas Bobbitt, died in June 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Starlene Bobbitt, Evansville, Wyo.; three daughters, Cindy Rogers, Seiling, Okla., Shelley Fisher, Havre, Mont., and Licia Van Middlesworth, Chester, Okla.; a son, Mitch Bobbitt, Woodwind, Okla.; two stepsons, R.J. Gibson and Brandon Gibson, both of Evansville, Wyo.; a brother, Dick Bobbitt, Markham, Texas; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Shirley Nickel
LITTLETON, Colo. - Shirley J. Nickel, 66, of Littleton, died Sept. 7, 2001, at her home.
Memorial services were held Sept. 12 at the First Presbyterian Church in Littleton. Burial of the cremains will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 17 in Highland Cemetery. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established with the Winfield Public Library and the Shirley Nickel Exhibition Fund, Denver Art Museum, 100 W. 14th Ave. Parkway, Denver, CO 80206, Attn: Development Department.
Nickel was born May 13, 1935, in Winfield, to Charlotte (Butts) and Earl Cameron. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1953 and obtained a teaching degree in elementary education from Kansas State University.
Nickel moved to Colorado to live and teach school in the Englewood and Littleton school districts 45 years ago. She later worked for Lucent Technologies in Denver and retired from that company two years ago.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Littleton.
Survivors include two sons, Cameron G. Nickel, Denver, and Matthew Nickel, Steamboat Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Jennifer Moore, Wichita; a sister, Beverly Cheney, Winfield; and four grandchildren.
LaVerne Frye
UDALL - Services for LaVerne C. Frye were held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 12, 2001, at the First Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Sam Lever and Gailard Hopkins officiated. Burial was in Udall Cemetery.
Colleen Webster was the organist. Lever and Webster performed "Here I Am" and "What a Day That Will Be."
Honorary casket bearers were Dick Daniels, Shelby Godwin, John Hedden, Les Lever, Dennis Rittenhouse and Bob Watkins.
Casket bearers were Brad Adams, Clarence, Gary and Johnnie Brookings, Lloyd Klein and Oscar Morton.
A memorial has been established with the Udall First Church of the Nazarene Steeple Fund.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Eva Farley
ARKANSAS CITY - Services for Eva Jane Farley were held at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 12, 2001, at Hawks Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Gary Brown officiated. Burial was in Parker Cemetery.
Sheila Jones was the organist, and Jones and Pat McCollough were the vocalists. Music was "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?"
Casket bearers were James, Ronald, David and Jeremy Jones, Marty Ringgold and James Dickson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary Children & Youth Program and American Legion Baseball.
Francis Ransom
WICHITA - Francis Eugene Ransom, 74, longtime resident of Wichita, died Sept. 10, 2001, at a hospital in Simi Valley, Calif.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Derby. Bishop Noel Brinkerhoff will officiate. Carter-Rader American Legion Post 149 of Howard will conduct military services at 3 p.m. in Grace Lawn Cemetery
at Howard.
A memorial has been established with Alcoholics Anonymous. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Ransom was born Sept. 6, 1927, at Elk Falls, to Geraldine Leona (Dunbar) and Clyde Ellsworth Ransom. He attended school in the Elk Falls community.
Ransom married before entering the United States Army and served in the Korean War. The marriage ended in divorce. After his discharge from the military, he married again. This marriage ended several years later.
Ransom lived in California and Kansas and was employed as a machinist in the aerospace industry most of his life.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Alcoholics Anonymous and attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Derby.
Survivors include two daughters, Debra Davey, Simi Valley, Calif., and Katherine Ransom, Wichita; two sons, Clyde Ransom, Simi Valley, Calif., and Dan Ransom, Wichita; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Alice Clady
INDIANOLA, Okla. - Alice Sager Clady, 85, retired restaurant owner, of Indianola, died Sept. 10, 2001, at Eufaula, Okla.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Indianola Cemetery. The Rev. William Nixon will officiate. Black's, Shipman & Merritt Funeral Home, Eufaula, is in charge of arrangements.
Clady was born Dec. 18, 1915, in Canadian, Okla., to Winnie (Kitchen) and William Sager. She graduated from Canadian High School.
A resident of Tulsa for many years, she moved back to Indianola 28 years ago.
She married Gilbert Clady in California. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Freada Legleiter, Oxford; three brothers, J.L. Sager and Charles Sager, both of Tulsa, and R.S. Sager, Chico, Calif.; one grandson, eight great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
Cecil Green
CEDAR VALE - Cecil Lee Green, 63, of Cedar Vale, died Sept. 13, 2001, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Monday.
A memorial has been established with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for the Century Ride that will be made by Green's grandson, Chris, in his honor. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Green was born Oct. 4, 1937, in rural Grenola, to Julia Lorena (Halfhill) and William Ray Green. He was raised in Cedar Vale where he attended Goodview grade school until the fourth grade. He then attended school in Cedar Vale and graduated in 1955.
On Dec. 23, 1956, he married France Jo Goss at the Cedar Vale Assembly of God. They lived on a farm outside of Cedar Vale throughout their marriage.
A farmer and rancher, Green became a bail bondsman two years ago.
He was a member of the Wauneta United Methodist Church and was formerly on the board of the water shed district and Rural Water District 2 in Chautauqua County. He was also involved with the Chain Gang at Cedar Vale High School for a number of years.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Green, and a daughter, Debbie Lampson, both of Cedar Vale; two sons, Mike Green, Cedar Vale, and Dave Green, Neodesha; his mother, Lorena Green, and a brother, Gerald Green, both of Cedar Vale; three sisters, Doris Boswell, Cedar Vale, Dorothy Boswell, Onaga, and Barbara Hembree, Pawhuska, Okla.; and 11 grandchildren.
Misty Carrier
ARKANSAS CITY - Misty Dawn Carrier, 28, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 13, 2001, at her home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Greenlawn Cemetery
in Melrose. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Contributions may be made to the family to help pay for Carrier's final expenses.
Carrier was born May 24, 1973, in Kansas City, Kan., to Esther (Forrester) and Thomas Carrier. Physically handicapped, she lived with her family for three years in Picher, Okla. Then she and her sister moved to Winfield. She attended school in Winfield and then moved to Garden City. In 1993 she graduated from Garden City High School with honors. She and her sister were the first handicapped persons to graduate from the school. A couple of years later they moved to Arkansas City.
Survivors include her parents, Tom and Esther Carrier, Picher, Okla.; a sister, Esther Louise "Penny" Carrier, Arkansas City; a brother, Tom Carrier Jr., Picher, Okla.; her grandfather, Ray Forrester, Mound Valley, and her grandmother, Wilma Carrier, Baxter Springs.
Floyd Boland
WICHITA - Floyd J. Boland, 91, formerly of Cedar Vale, died Sept. 15, 2001, at a Medicalodge in Wichita.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Funeral Home in Cedar Vale. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Hawley, Okla., cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 tonight.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Kansas and the Alzheimer's and Related Diseases Foundation.
Boland was born Sept. 9, 1910, in Grant County, Okla., to Emma (Shafer) and William Boland. He was raised and educated in the Jefferson, Okla., area.
In 1937 he married Hazel Kennedy.
He later married Myrle Bishop. She died in 1977.
In 1981 he married LaGretta Smith.
Boland farmed in Oklahoma, then moved to Wichita in 1952. There he worked in several plants before working 18 years for Cessna Aircraft. He retired in 1972 and moved to Cedar Vale in 1986.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and had been active in Cedar Vale Civil Defense.
Survivors include three daughters, Jean Dunbar, Mabscott, W.Va, Lila Leis, Cedar Vale, and Leona Sampson, Climax; two brothers, Clarence Boland, Pond Creek, Okla., and Omer Boland, Ridgeway, Colo.; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
