Mary Meehan

ELGIN, Okla. - Mary E. Meehan, 71, of Elgin, died Sept. 6, 2001, in the Lawton, Okla., hospital after a lengthy illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Ann's Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph Kolb will officiate. Burial will be in Post Cemetery in Fort Sill, Okla. A wake service will be held at the church Saturday evening at 7.

Robbins Funeral Home of Fletcher, Okla., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Meehan was born Jan. 25, 1930, in Boston. She married Robert Meehan Sr. on Aug. 19, 1949, in Boston, and they traveled in the military until moving to Elgin in 1970. She had operated Elgin Bait Shop since 1977.

Meehan was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.

Her husband died Jan. 22, 1989.

Survivors include six daughters, Kathy Taranto, New Port Richey, Fla., Debbie Lee, Fayetteville, N.C., Terri Seidel, Winfield, Susie Mahan, Andrews, S.C., Mary Fehring, Apache, Okla., and Barbie Edings, Oswego; two sons, Rob Meehan and Bill Meehan, both of Elgin; two sisters, Agnes Powers, Boston, and Elaine Barrett, Scituate, Mass.; 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Dwight Holt

OXFORD - Dwight Lyman Holt, 91, of Oxford, died Sept. 7, 2001, in Riverview Manor.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Oxford United Methodist Church. Pastor Wayne Handle will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery in Winfield.

Friends may call at Oxford Funeral Service from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

A memorial has been established with Riverview Manor.

Holt was born Aug. 30, 1910, in Indiana, to Beatrice Kean. They moved to the Oxford area when he was five. He attended Buena Vista Country School and schools in Oxford and graduated from Oxford High School in 1929. He attended Southwestern College for two years and then taught at Mount Zion School for two years.

On June 1, 1936, he married Erma A. Buss in Oxford. She died on April 28, 1991.

Holt farmed with his father-in-law, John Buss, prior to establishing Holt Construction Co. The company did dirt construction and buried telephone cable in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Nebraska. Holt sold the company in the mid-1970s.

He was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church, a charter member of the board of Riverview Manor, a 50-year member of the Oxford Lions Club and the original trustee of the Boyer Trust from 1961 through the middle of 2000.

He served on the Oxford school board from 1966 to 1975 and had been a member of the Oxford Bank Board of Directors.

Holt was also a longtime member of the Oxford Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite Consistory and the Midian Shrine, both of Wichita.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Flickinger and JoAnna Rankin, both of Oxford; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Carole Grant

Services for Carole Sue Grant were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 7, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ted Brown officiated. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Darrell Webber gave a special tribute. Steve Wariner performed "Holes in the Floor of Heaven," and the congregation sang "The Solid Rock." Zola Gottlob was the pianist.

Verne Gottlob played a harmonica solo, "In the Garden," at the cemetery.

Casket bearers were Jim Butters, Larry Grant, Scott Grant, Joe Haggard, Brent Lumbert and Ross Lumbert.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and Hackney Community Baptist Church.

Patricia Houser

BENBROOK, Texas - Patricia Bell (Hughes) Houser, 77, a homemaker, of Benbrook, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 6, 2001.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Greenwood Memorial Park in Fort Worth. Greenwood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and American Diabetes Foundation.

Houser was born Aug. 11, 1924, in Winfield.

A son, Paul F. Houser, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, retired Lt. Col. Paul R. Houser, USAF, Benbrook; a daughter, Michele J. Gugas, Tampa, Fla.; two sons, retired Lt. Col. Michael S. Houser, Las Vegas, and Steven P. Houser, Chicago; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Devine Swisher

Devine Harris Allen Swisher, infant son of Paul and Samantha Swisher of Winfield, died Sept. 7, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Dexter Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established at Winfield Iron and Metal.

Devine was born Aug. 17, 2001, in Arkansas City, to Samantha Sue (Holmes) and Paul Harris Swisher.

Survivors in addition to his parents are his grandparents, Tammy Green and Glen Hill, both of Arkansas City, Robert Holmes, Rich Hill, Mo., and Benny H. and Freda Swisher, Winfield.

Elsie Potter

ARKANSAS CITY - Elsie I. Potter, 82, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 8, 2001, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center in Arkansas City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Jesse Kindred will officiate. Burial will be in Maple City Cemetery.

The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Potter was born July 28, 1919, in Winfield, to Elizabeth (Bogner) and Alan Danner. She was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1938.

On April 29, 1939, she married M.L. Potter in Newkirk. They made their home in Maple City for many years. From 1956 to 1960 they co-owned the Arkansas City Livestock Auction and from 1959 to 1973 the Newkirk Livestock Auction. Her husband died in 1991.

Potter was a longtime member of Victory Chapter 151 Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include a son, Gary Potter, Arkansas City; a daughter, Sharon Casebolt, Pawhuska, Okla.; two sisters, Alice Blatchford, Arkansas City, and Maxine DeLong, Winfield; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Irl Fife

Services for Irl Junior Fife were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 8, 2001, at the First Baptist Church. Dr. James McIntosh officiated. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery. American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 provided military honors.

Irma Scholfield was the organist. Martin Rude sang "How Great Thou Art," and McIntosh sang "In the Garden."

Honorary casket bearers were Bob Brown, Jeff Fife, Wendy Fife, Tom Jester, Bob Kitch, Lawrence Miller, Andy Parman, Dr. Shanthi Samuel and Helen Seacat.

Casket bearers were Jerald Fife, Roger Fife, Larry Rood, Dr. Chandy Samuel, Bob Seley and Paul Wesley.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First Baptist Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Frances Maxwell

DOUGLASS - Frances N. Maxwell, 79, of Douglass, homemaker and retired insurance agent, died Sept. 8, 2001, at her home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Cliff F. Muci will officiate. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and P.E.O.

Maxwell was born Feb. 13, 1921, in Winfield, to Neva (Creed) and Lloyd Warner. She graduated from Douglass High School.

On April 25, 1942, she married Eugene Maxwell in Winfield.

She was a member of the First Christian Church for over 68 years and a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood for over 50 years.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Maxwell, Douglass; a son, James Maxwell, Bend, Ore.; a daughter, Sharon George, Vienna, Va.; and two granddaughters.
