Helen Cline
ARKANSAS CITY - Helen I. Cline, 93, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 10, 2001, at Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center in Arkansas City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Wayne Robbins will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Church of Christ. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Cline was born Aug. 23, 1907, in Dexter, to Anna (Sturm) and John C. Hite. She was raised and educated in Dexter. In 1925 she moved to Arkansas City and attended Arkansas City Business College.
On Dec. 2, 1926, she married Homer Landreth Cline in Arkansas City. A homemaker, she worked at the Arkansas City hospital as a nurse's aide during the 1950s. Her husband died Sept. 7, 1982.
Cline was a member of the Church of Christ, the Women's Auxiliary of the International Typographical Union and the Arkansas Society of Mayflower Descendants.
Survivors include a son, Duane Cline, Rogers, Ark.; a daughter, Linda L. Wilson, Arkansas City; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Dorothy Duncan
Dorothy M. Duncan, 82, of 1215 E. 11th, Winfield, died Aug. 12, 2001, at Winfield Rest Haven.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery
north of Arkansas City.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.
Duncan was born Sept. 28, 1918, in Cowley County, to Virginia (Harper) and Walter M. Schmidt. She attended the Bland school for eight years.
On June 12, 1939, she married Victor R. Duncan in Blackwell, Okla. He died Jan. 30, 1985.
Duncan spent her life in the Winfield area. She was a homemaker and member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Stanley Schmidt, LaMar, Mo., and Leroy Schmidt, Norman, Okla.
Christopher Michael
EVANSTON, Wyo. - Christopher W. "Spanky" Michael, 51, of Evanston, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 10, 2001, as a result of an industrial accident.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Evanston Church of Christ. Burial arrangements are undecided.
Friends may call at Crandall Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Church of Christ, 90 Lodgepole Drive, Evanston, WY 82930, or the Arthritis Foundation.
Michael was born Feb. 20, 1950, in Oklahoma City, to Mary Alberta (Calvert) and Franklin W. Michael. He was raised and educated in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1968.
He spent his early adult years working as a roughneck and a driller on oil rigs in south-central Kansas.
On June 1, 1974, he married Kathleen "Kay" Lawrence in Winfield. They made their home in Winfield until 1978 when they moved to Evanston. There he worked as a driller on the big oil rigs in the area. He worked in the petroleum industry until his death.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Michael, and a daughter, Carrie Kathleen Michael, both of Evanston; a half-sister, Teresa Sanders, Wichita; and a half-brother, Michael Sooter, Bozeman, Mont.
Mildred Martin
HOWARD - Mildred Jean "Millie" Martin, 75, longtime resident of Howard, died Aug. 10, 2001, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.
A rosary service will be held at 7 tonight and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, both at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moline. The Rev. Edward J. Steinberger will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery
at Moline.
Memorial contributions may be made to the John and Mildred Martin Memorial Scholarship Fund or St. Mary's Altar Society. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.
Martin was born Nov. 26, 1925, in Rosalia, to Vinita May (Nicholas) and Eddie Ernest Baker. She attended school in Rosalia before graduating from El Dorado High School. She later attended Butler County Community College.
On Aug. 24, 1946, she married John Stanley Martin Jr. in El Dorado. She was employed as a school teacher and telephone operator but devoted most of her life to caring for her family. They lived in Ottawa, Wichita and Moline before settling in the Howard community. Her husband died Feb. 2, 1989.
Martin was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Telephone Pioneers of America and PSR teacher organization. She served as a Boy Scout leader for many years. An active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Martin belonged to the altar society. She also did genealogical research and preservation of historical records.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Martin, Jefferson, Iowa, and John S. Martin III, Augusta; four daughters, Nancy Barnaby, Manhattan, Sally Morgan, Douglass, Patricia Wiseman, Howard, and Jean Willson, Shawnee; a sister Hazel Ilman, Salem, Ore.; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Wesley Dupuis
LONGTON - Wesley Gilbert "Wes" Dupuis, 69, of Longton, died Aug. 7, 2001, at St. John's Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Independence. The Rev. Stephen Thapwa will officiate. Burial and military services will be in Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Wash.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Dupuis was born May 1, 1932, in Tacoma, Wash., to Lillian Marie (Wessel) and Edward Earl Dupuis. He graduated from high school and attended college in Tacoma.
On July 30, 1966, he married Ruth Harriet Bucklin in Seattle.
A veteran of the Korean War, Dupuis served 29 years in the U.S. Army. The family made their home in numerous states and several locations in Germany and Korea. Dupuis and his wife moved to the Longton community in the mid-1990s to be near family.
Dupuis was a member of the Audubon Society, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Knights of Columbus. He attended St. Andrew's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Dupuis, and two daughters, Teresa Measles and Kimberly Dupuis, all of Longton; a son, Anthony Dupuis, Lakewood, Wash.; three brothers, Nels Dupuis and James Dupuis, both of Canby, Ore., and George Dupuis, Bonnie Lake, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
Stephen Frazier
Stephen Keith Frazier, 79, longtime Winfield farmer and rancher, died Aug. 10, 2001, at Cumbernauld Village.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Military honors will be conducted in Union-Graham Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 tonight.
A memorial has been established as the Stephen K. Frazier Memorial Basketball Scholarship at Southwestern College. Contributions may be made through the college or the funeral home.
Frazier was born Nov. 3, 1921, on a farm south of Anthony, to Beatrice (Rife) and Rufus Frazier. His youth was spent working with his father's threshing crew. He was educated in Burchfield school district 43 and was valedictorian of the 1940 class of Spring Township High School in Harper County. His team competed in the state basketball tournament in 1940, and he was selected an all-state player.
He received a basketball scholarship at Wichita State University in 1940 and later transferred to Southwestern College where he was an all-conference player in the Central Intercollegiate Conference.
In 1943, as an enlisted reservist in the U.S. Marine Corps, he transferred to Purdue University where he played basketball for the Boilermakers. During World War II, he took part in the first assault wave on Okinawa, Japan, in 1945.
Following discharge, he entered the University of Oklahoma as a student of geology.
On Sept. 13, 1946, he married Doris Emily Bernstorf in Hutchinson.
In 1948 Frazier became a geologist with the California Co. Inc. He served in many states until 1961 when he resigned his position as district superintendent of the Rocky Mountain area. The family moved to Winfield where he managed the family farm.
Frazier was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, and the Kansas Wheat Commission and was president of the Kansas Federation of Taxpayers Inc. He also served on the board of directors of the Winfield Co-op, Rural Water District 4 and the Cowley County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife, Emily Frazier, Winfield; a daughter, Jane Ellen Frazier, New York City; four sons, Stephen Kendal Frazier, Denver, Warren Farley Frazier and Graham Phillip Frazier, both of Winfield, and John Eric Frazier, Altamont; a sister, Ruth Jean Andersen, Anthony; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Lottie Learned
WICHITA - Lottie B. Learned, 90, retired barber, of Wichita, died Aug. 12, 2001, at the Kansas Masonic Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Mulvane Cemetery. Senter-Smith Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Masonic Home's Caldwell Assisted Living Center.
Learned was born Sept. 23, 1910, in Udall, to Mary V. (Brown) and Charles C. Nave.
On Jan. 29, 1930, she married Cecil Elmo Learned in Newkirk. He died Sept. 29, 1982.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Bonnie Haynes, Douglass.
James O'Leary
ST. FRANCIS - James "Jim" O'Leary, 56, of St. Francis, died Aug. 7, 2001, at Cheyenne County Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 10 at St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. Knodel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cheyenne County Hospital and Clinic.
O'Leary was born Sept. 20, 1944, in St. Francis, to Roberta and Paul O'Leary. He graduated from Cheyenne County High School in 1962. He worked in construction and was an administrator at O'Leary Nursing Home in Cheyenne Wells, Colo., and later at nursing homes in Goodland and Winfield.
On Dec. 27, 1969, he married Vickie Horvath Weber. They later divorced.
Survivors include his children, Paul O'Leary, Commerce City, Colo., Lydia O'Leary, St. Francis, Lenny Weber, Burden, Joyce Kerbs, Fort Morgan, Colo., Mike Weber, Agra, and Tony Aguilar Jr., Westminster, Colo.; his mother, Roberta O'Leary, St. Francis; a sister, Janice Krien, St. Francis; a brother, Ron O'Leary, Topeka; and eight grandchildren.
