Melba Sumpter
ARKANSAS CITY - Melba Ellen Sumpter, 85, of Arkansas City, died July 17, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Her service will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Parker Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home until 8 tonight. The family will greet friends before and after the service at The Hogan, 1200 North C.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be sent to the funeral home.
Sumpter was born April 3, 1916, in Lucas, to Phoebe Elizabeth (Reiss) and Alva Whaley Maupin.
On May 23, 1947, she married Norvil "Jack" Sumpter in Oklahoma City.
She had been a member of the Arkansas City Bowling League.
A daughter preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Sumpter, Arkansas City; a son, John Mathes, Kansas City, Kan.; five daughters, Lois Plecker, Arkansas City, Eunice Borthwick, Dell, Okla., Vivian Davis, Edmond, Okla., Melba "Susie" Hines, Oklahoma City, and Barbara Streum, Noble, Okla.; 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Dutch Stegelman
Rollin Henry "Dutch" Stegelman, 75, of 915 E. Eighth, Winfield, died July 17, 2001, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Military services will be conducted by American Legion Post 10 at Greenlawn Cemetery
in Grenola.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. The family will receive visitors from 3 to 5.
Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church, Grenola United Methodist Church, the Grenola Historical Society and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Stegelman was born Jan. 8, 1926, in Grenola, to Frances Emma (Halfhill) and Henry Christ Stegelman. He was raised and educated in the Grenola community and graduated from high school in 1943.
A veteran of World War II, Stegelman served with the U.S. Army Air Corps. Following his discharge as a sergeant in 1946, he returned to Grenola where he farmed for seven years.
On Dec. 22, 1946, he married Doris Elena McClure in Winfield. They resided in Grenola until moving to Winfield in 1954. Stegelman was a partner in S & S Electronics for several years as a television/radio repairman. In 1976 he became a deputy sheriff in the Cowley County Sheriff's Department. He retired as a lieutenant in 1989.
A member of Grace United Methodist Church, Stegelman was a longtime member of American Legion Post 10 and was formerly affiliated with the Winfield Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Stegelman, Winfield; a son, Richard "Stan" Stegelman, Topeka; two daughters, Saundra Sue Schmidt, Shallow Water, and Linda Jo Scott, Topeka; a brother, Alfred Stegelman, Casper, Wyo.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Loyd Woods
Loyd Wilson Woods, 80, of 701 E. Eighth, Winfield, and a resident of the Kansas Veterans Home, died July 18, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to noon at Miles Funeral Service.
A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's wing at the Kansas Veterans Home. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Woods was born Feb. 19, 1921, in Colcord, Okla., to Mary Ellen (Beck) and Roy Woods. He was raised and educated in the Colcord area and helped on the family farm.
On Aug. 1, 1942, he married Ruth L. Allen in Tahlequah, Okla. They made their first home in Tahlequah and in 1951 moved to Winfield.
Woods was employed by Pomona Tile Co. at Strother Field until its closing in 1967. He then worked as an assembler at General Electric at Strother Field until his retirement in 1982.
He moved to the Kansas Veterans Home in June 2000.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Woods, and a son, Carl LeRoy Woods, both of Winfield; a brother, Floyd Woods, Colcord, Okla.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Donald Holt
HARPER - Donald E. Holt, 75, of Harper, died July 19, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Harper Christian Church. Pastor Clayton Portenier will officiate. Burial will be in Harper Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Harper Christian Church and Harper Lighthouse Teen Center.

Holt was born July 3, 1926, in Atlanta, to Lois (Johnson) and Everett Holt.
He married Lois Keely on May 28, 1948, in Douglass.
Holt was a retired truck driver and warehouseman for National Lead Co. of Great Bend and foreman of Tom Wedman's cattle operation at Harper.
He was a member of the Harper Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Holt, and two sons, Don Holt and Ron Holt, all of Harper; a daughter, Cindy Harrold, Ulysses; a brother, John W. Holt, Westerly, R.I., two sisters, Velda McGinn, Woodward, Okla., and JoAnn Bracken, Pawhuska, Okla.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Elmer Griffith
Services for Elmer C. Griffith were held at 10 a.m. July 19, 2001, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Brother Keith Cross officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons performed Masonic rites. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 and American Legion Post 10 performed military honors.
Music included "Farther Along," sung by the congregation with accompaniment by organist Laura Belle Haines.
Honorary casket bearers were Bryan Nebergall and Frank Tipton.
Casket bearers were Mike Gibbons, Ron Mozingo, Dale Fruits, Christopher Smith, Byron Jones and Alan Rush.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home Activity Fund.
Cricket Parker
SEDAN - Naomi Katharine "Cricket" Parker, 90, died July 17, 2001, in Sedan.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Elgin United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Elgin Cemetery. Graves-Baird Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the church.
Parker was born Nov. 29, 1910, in Elgin, to Nora Julia (Van Demark) and Fred M. Fralick.
In 1935 she married John N. "Sparky" Parker. He died in 1984.
Survivors include a brother, John Fralick, Sedan; and a sister, Lura Dean Fuller, Elgin.
George Underwood
Services for George D. Underwood were held at 10 a.m. July 20, 2001, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch officiated. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita.
Casket bearers were George W., Orlan L., Aaron D. and Jared L. Underwood, David Oakes, Steve Reed and Charles Peach Jr.
Memorials have been established with Grouse Valley Manor and the Alzheimer's Foundation.
John Hillier
HINESVILLE, Ga. - John W. Hillier, 82, of Hinesville, formerly of Cambridge, died July 21, 2001, at Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville.
Services were at 2 p.m. today at Westside Baptist Church. The Rev. Kevin McKoy officiated. Burial was in Oglethorpe Memorial Park with Carter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
A World War II Army veteran, Hillier was an aviation flight instructor at Fort Stewart, Fort Rucker, Ala., Graham Air Force Base and Camp Gary, Texas. He retired from civil service at Fort Campbell, Ky., and served as a bailiff for the Liberty County Superior Court for six years.
A resident of Hinesville for 21 years, Hillier was a member of Westside Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dott Hillier, Hinesville; a daughter, Janet Dasher, Walthourville, Ga.; a son, Gary L. Hillier, Clarksville, Tenn.; a sister, Nadine Williford, Sacramento, Calif.; two grandsons and two great-grandchildren.
Lois Dennett
Services for Lois Edith Dennett were held at 10:30 a.m. July 21, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Wilmot Cemetery.
Music included "In the Garden," "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
Honorary casket bearers were Brandon and Landon Baker, Cooper and Micah Dennett and Garrett and Traiton Suttles.
Casket bearers were Greg Brock, Aaron and Tarl Dennett, Robbie Suttle, Craig Topper and Troy Zimmerman.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care, 800 Main Place, Winfield.
Loyd Woods
Services for Loyd Wilson Woods were held at 2 p.m. July 21, 2001, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Dale Bailey officiated.
Music recordings included "Amazing Grace," sung by Willie Nelson, and "Go Rest High on That Mountain," by Vince Gill.
A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's wing of the Kansas Veterans Home at Winfield.
