Cleo Bainter
GRENOLA - Cleo D. Bainter, 87, of Grenola, died June 13, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, north of Arkansas City.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8:30.
Memorials have been established with the Grenola Christian Church and the Cedar Vale Community Hospital Activity Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Bainter was born March 4, 1914, on a farm northwest of Oxford, to Martha and John Bainter. He was raised and educated in Oxford. As a young man, he helped his father on the farm.
He first married Mabel Fearmax, who preceded him in death.
Bainter was employed in the maintenance department of Winfield State Hospital and Training Center until his retirement in 1979.
On Nov. 17, 1980, he married Alma L. Burdett in Arkansas City. They made their home on a farm 10 miles east of Winfield. In 1996 they moved to Grenola, and he moved to the Cedar Vale Community Hospital Long-Term Care Center in April.
Bainter was a member of the Grenola Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Bainter, Grenola; a stepson, H.L. Gilliam, Springdale, Ark.; a stepdaughter, Deloris Sutton, Sedan; eight stepgrandchildren and 17 stepgreat-grandchildren.
Roy Burchfield
ARKANSAS CITY - Services for Roy E. Burchfield were held at 2 p.m. June 14, 2001, in Memorial Lawn Cemetery
near Arkansas City. The Revs. K.B. Murray and Rick Van Wye officiated.
Mrs. Robert Burchfield performed "One Day at a Time," "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace."
Honorary casket bearers were Carl Askins, Loyd Call, Norman Crouse and Merle Shepard.
Casket bearers were Doug Bliss, Arlie and Bob Burchfield, Willie Coker, Ray Fleenor and Bob Winn.
A memorial has been established with Millington Street Baptist Church.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Richard Valyer
EUREKA - Richard Arden Valyer, 73, of Eureka, died June 14, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Pleasant Valley Cemetery
at Stanley. W.L. Frye & Son Mortuary and Crematory, Olathe, is in charge of arrangements.
Valyer was born Feb 27, 1928, in Emporia, to Mabel and Herbert Valyer. He graduated from Emporia College and received his master's degree from Emporia State University.
He taught in high schools in Elmdale, Washington and Westphalia and was a professor of education at Southwestern College.
Survivors include his wife, Ila Valyer, Eureka; two stepsons, James Lee and John Lee; a sister, Pat Langford; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
George Tharp
George W. Tharp, 79, of Winfield, died June 14, 2001, at the Kansas Veterans Home of Winfield.
Cremation has taken place. Private services will be held.
Tharp was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Sydnia Young
CEDAR VALE - Sydnia Lyn Young, 54, of Cedar Vale, died June 14, 2001, at her home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Ozro Cemetery, southeast of Cedar Vale.
Memorials have been established with the Cedar Vale Nursing Center and Hospice Inc.
Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Young was born Sept, 14, 1946, in Ashland, to Ruby (Crane) and Glen Rice. When she was three years old, the family moved to Cedar Vale where she graduated from high school in 1964.
On July 10, 1964, she married Michael A. Young in Wichita. They later made Cedar Vale their home. In 1981 she began working at the Cedar Vale Nursing Center in the activities department where she was a director and social worker. She was employed there until she became ill.
She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and the Hewins Extension Home Unit. She served on the Chautauqua County Fair Board, was a Republican committeewoman for Harrison Township and a precinct committeewoman for Chautauqua County.
Survivors include her husband, Michael A. Young, and a son, Michael Glen Young, both of Cedar Vale; a daughter, Lorri Pontious, Kingfisher, Okla.; her mother, Ruby Rice; and four grandchildren.
Virginia Crowe
BAY CITY - Virginia Irene Crowe, 48, of Bay City, Texas, formerly of Winfield, died June 15, 2001, of cancer.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Bay City. The Revs. Roy O. Biser, Robert Luton and Dr. Bob Hayes Jr. will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Roselawn Cemetery
in Van Vleck, Texas.
The family has suggested that memorials be sent to the Baylor Breast Care Center, 6550 Fannin, Suite 701, Houston, TX 77030, c/o Dr. Richard M. Elledge. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Crowe was born Feb. 22, 1953, in Winfield to Elsie (Fogler) and Harry Wayne Snell.
She was a computer programmer with Region IV Education Center in Houston. She and her husband, the Rev. Tom Crowe, served in churches in Tomball, Nagadoches, Port Arthur, Longview, Houston and Bay City, all in Texas.
Crowe was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and served as president of the Ministers' Spouses Association for the Longview and Houston northwest districts of the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. She also sang in church choirs and played bells.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Tom Crowe, Bay City; and her mother, Elsie Snell, Winfield.
Larry Gilbert
DEXTER - Lawrence R. "Larry" Gilbert, 92, of Dexter, died May 29, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita following a brief illness.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Dexter Christian Church. At Gilbert's request, his ashes will be spread over Santa Monica Bay in California.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.
Gilbert was born June 20, 1908, on a farm north of Fargo, Okla., to Hattie Lowell (Turner) and John Gilbert. He grew up at Fargo and attended a country school.
In 1937 he married Thelma Olson in Montana.
Gilbert worked as a psychiatric aide at Fort Supply (Okla.) Mental Hospital. He then transferred to a mental hospital in Pueblo, Colo. The family later moved to Oregon and then to California. In California he worked in construction, at McDonald-Douglas Aircraft Co., Standard Oil Co. and various other jobs.
His wife died in 1977. He then retired from Southern Lathing Co. and moved to Dexter.
On June 6, 1978, he married Katherine (Atkinson) Latta in Miami, Okla., and they made their home in Dexter.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine Gilbert, Dexter; a daughter, Barbara Salmi, New Jersey; four stepsons, Duane Latta and David Latta, both of Moore, Okla., Larry D. Latta, May, Okla., and Ronald Latta, Irving, Texas; a stepdaughter, Lyla K. Richard, Woodward, Okla.; a brother, Theron Gilbert, Disney, Okla.; 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Eulah Lilly
ARKANSAS CITY - Eulah Irene Lilly, 80, of Arkansas City, died June 16, 2001, in Shreveport, La.
Burial will be at 10 a.m Wednesday in Blackwell Cemetery. The Rev. Rick Longcrier will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Cancer Fund through Roberts and Sons Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, OK 74631.
Lilly was born May 2, 1921, in Blackwell, to Ella Leota (Needles) and Thomas William Lynn. She graduated from high school in Blackwell in 1936.
She then moved to California where she worked in the aircraft industry for 10 years. She returned to Blackwell and worked as a cook in the Chicken in the Ruff restaurant.
On Oct. 8, 1953, she married William Fredrick Lilly in Wellington. They settled on a farm between Arkansas City and Winfield. In 1955 they returned to Blackwell where they operated a dairy for seven years.
They then moved to Arkansas City, and she worked at Woolworth's, Winfield State Hospital & Training Center and the Arkansas City hospital. She retired in 1986.
Her husband died Jan. 17, 1983. She was on vacation in Shreveport at the time of her death.
Lilly was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two nephews, Marvin Swopes, Blackwell, and Bobby Swopes, Ponca City, and five nieces, Sue Valentine and Celia Balli, both of Blackwell, Reola Jones, Okeene, Okla., Jo Laffoon, Ponca City, and Mary Handy, League City, Texas.
