KAIGHIN, Harry Edward Kaighin, 89, Cummings, KS passed away Saturday, October 8, 2005 at Hickory Point Nursing Home, Oskaloosa, KS.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, October 13, 2005 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial at Cummings Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:00-8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Jefferson County Hospice or the Hickory Point Nursing Home and left in care of the funeral home.
Mr. Kaighin was born October 6, 1916 in Pardee, KS the son of J.J. and Emma (Becker) Kaighin. He attended Pardee Grade School. He was employed with Midwest Solvents (MGP) for 29 years retiring in 1981. He continued to work at the family farm near Cummings for a number of years. He was a member of the Cummings United Methodist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge # 158, receiving his 60 year pin. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and attending auctions.
He married Glenna May Greer on October 18, 1938. She preceded him in death in 1973. He married Betty Lindsay Bilderback on December 6, 1975. They later divorced in 2001. He was also preceded in death by a son Buddy Kaighin; grandson Ryan Frost; brother Lester Kaighin; son in law Richard Lindsay and his parents.
Survivors include his daughter Carolyn Lindsay of Lansing, KS. 4 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren. Brother James Kaighin, sister Thelma Wagner. Niece Susie Frost and nephew Michael Greer, who he helped raise.
LUTZ, Kathleen C. (Bertels) Lutz, 81 years old, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 on Monday, Oct. 10th, 2005 at the St. Benedict’s Church with Fr. Gerard Senecal, O.S.B. as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atchison, KS. A parish rosary will be recited on Sunday, Oct. 9th, 2005 beginning at 6:00 PM with visitation to follow until 8:30 PM at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to ACES Endowment.
Kathleen was born on Feb. 20, 1924 in Nortonville, KS. the daughter of Joseph and Clara (Weishaar) Bertels. She had attended St. Joseph’s grade school, Nortonville, and graduated from Effingham High School. She married Clarence Joseph Lutz on January 28, 1947 at St. Benedict’s church, Atchison. Mr. Lutz preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1963 just prior to the birth of their 12th child. Kathleen worked hard to see that her children attended Atchison Catholic Schools. She was a member of St. Benedicts Church, and enjoyed her family, and grandchildren.
Survivors include eight daughters; Cathy and her husband Ron Anielak, Blue Springs, MO., Jane and her husband, Mike Peterson, Olathe, KS., Martha and her husband Dave Wolfe, Falls City, NE., Marion and her husband Pat Doran, Lenexa, KS., Barbara and her husband Dave Werner, Falls City, NE., Connie and her husband Kenny Winkley, Topeka, KS., Patty and her husband Nicky McDevitt, Rushville, MO., LeeAnn and her husband, Alan Russell, Olathe, KS.; Three Sons, Dennis and his wife Pam Lutz, Lewis & Clark Village, MO., Mark Lutz, Leavenworth, KS., and Greg and his wife Marcie Lutz, Atchison, KS., brother, Marvin Bertels, Nortonville, KS., four sisters; Mary Frederick, West Sun City, AZ., Rita Frederick, Kirkland, AZ., Marjorie Wills, Glendale, AZ., and Ann Huss, Nortonville, KS., Thirty two grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Her parents, husband Clarence, a son Larry Lutz, and 4 brothers, Robert, Donald, Melvin, and Paul Bertels preceded her in death.
CARROLL, Margaret M. Carroll, 80, Atchison, KS passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2005 at Atchison Hospital.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, October 8, 2005 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will be private. Visitation will be 7:00-8:30 PM Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Community of Christ, or the American Cancer Society and left in care of the funeral home.
Mrs. Carroll was born May 6, 1925 in Independence, MO. the daughter of Cedric and Beulah (Dittemore) Webster. She attended Leavenworth High School and was a longtime member of the Community of Christ. Margaret was past president of the Martin East PTA. Member of the Atchison County Extension Unit. Volunteer for over 20 years for the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary Unit. She was a den mother and Girl Scout leader while her children were growing up. Margaret enjoyed reading and traveling and loved her family.
She married Jackson H. Carroll on February 22, 1947 in Atchison, KS. He survives of the home. Additional survivors include her sons Ronald Carroll and his wife Marie of Omaha, NE; Donald Carroll and his wife Somporn of Atlanta, GA; James Carroll of Leavenworth; Robert Carroll and his wife Helen of St. Joseph, MO and John Carroll and his wife Merry of Atchison, KS. 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Leonard, George, Perry, Raymond “Tiny” and Ed Webster. Her parents and a grandmother Cora Heaton who raised her.
KIEHL, Carl Eugene Kiehl, 75, Atchison, KS passed away Sunday at Select Specialty Hospital, Topeka, KS.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, September 30, 2005 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Burial at Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 7:00-8:30 PM Thursday at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran School Endowment Fund or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Kiehl was born May 22, 1930 in Atchison, KS the son of Russell L. and Harriett M. (Kopelk) Kiehl. He was a US Army veteran of WWII serving in the expeditionary forces in Germany. He had been employed with Midwest Grain as a fireman. He retired after 20 years from the V.A. Center in Leavenworth at an Upholster. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #1175, the Eagles, the Missouri Pacific Train Club and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Carl enjoyed traveling, fishing and trains.
He married Betty J. Hays on April 24, 1954. She preceded him in death in March 2001. He married Evelyn Kautz on February 12, 2005. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include 2 sons. Step sons Curtis Kautz of Huron, KS; Willie Kautz and Leslie Kautz both of Atchison, KS. 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Brothers Russell E. Kiehl of Atchison, KS and John H. Kiehl of Sun Lakes, AZ. Brother in law Glen Hayes. Nieces and nephews Harry Kiehl, Jeannine Wyatt, Pam King, Kevin Kiehl and John Kiehl, Jr.
He was preceded in death by a brother Harry Kiehl and his parents.
FAST-SMITH, Victoria Kellar (Fast) Smith,61, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 24, 2005, at home in Bucyrus, KS. Inurnment will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 30, 2005 at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison, KS. A memorial service will follow the inurnment at 3 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, 17890 Metcalf, Stilwell, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in her memory to St Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church or to the charity of your choice.
Victoria K. Fast was born May 8, 1944 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of William Spencer and Jane Adele (Poindexter) Fast. Vicky attended Atchison public schools and graduated from Milwaukee Downer Seminary in 1962. She attended Mt. Saint Scholastica College and the University of Kansas. Her husband, Gary R. Smith, preceded her in death. She was owner and President of Smith RPM, Lenexa, KS. Vicky was an avid Jayhawk basketball fan. She loved her dogs, often taking in strays, and enjoyed the birds who came to her many feeders. Vicky was a warm and caring person. She had a calm and quiet of way of helping others.
She is survived by her step-son, Matthew Smith, his wife Tracy, and their children Garrett and Madison: her step-daughter, Bedonna Smith, and her son, Brave, and her brothers, David Spencer Fast, Leawood, KS. and William Kirk Fast, Ozawkie, KS. and one niece and three nephews.

KIEHL, Robert Dean Kiehl, 76, of Muscotah, KS, died Friday, September 23, 2005 at the Holton Community Hospital in Holton, KS.
Funeral Services will be 2:30 pm, Monday, Sept. 26, 2005 at the O’Trimble Funeral Home in Effingham, KS, with Jason and Angie Brent, officiating. Burial will be in the Muscotah Cemetery, Muscotah, KS. Family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00 pm until time of services at the O’Trimble Funeral Home in Effingham. Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Kiehl are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.
Robert was born in his home, one mile north of Muscotah on September 29, 1928, the son of Fred J. and Mildred (Bushey) Kiehl. He attended Muscotah Grade School and graduated from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham, KS. He helped his father and brothers in farming and many neighbors doing many different jobs. He went to work for Atchison County Bridge and Construction in 1963. He retired in 1995 due to ill health. His hobbies were fishing, growing tomatoes and watching T.V. He lived with his parents until they entered the nursing home. Then he lived by himself until four years ago when his health failed due to diabetes and he entered Jackson County Nursing Home at Holton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Delbert Bales.
Robert is survived by two brothers, Charles Kiehl and his wife, Phyllis, of Horton, KS and Donald E. Kiehl and his wife, Roberta, of Topeka, KS; one sister, Mrs. Delbert (Betty) Bales of Muscotah, eleven nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and many friends.
LINDSAY, Richard John Lindsay, Captain, USN (Ret), 67, Lansing, KS passed away September 20, 2005 at his home.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, September 24, 2005 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Burial at Nortonville Cemetery, Nortonville, KS. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Richard J. Lindsay memorials and left in care of the funeral home.
Mr. Lindsay was born March 22, 1938 in Nortonville, KS the son of John and Helen (Sprang) Lindsay. He was a graduate of Nortonville High School and attained a Bachelors Degree from the Golden Gate University while serving in the Navy. His distinguished Naval Career spanned 37 years and as he was apt to say “Could not decide if I wanted to make it a career.” He attained all enlisted ranks from E1 thru E9 and was commissioned an officer in 1969. He proceeded thru the rank of O1-O6 to retire as a Navy Captain.
Some highlights of his career included C.O. Naval Medical Clinic, Quantico, VA, C.O. U.S. Naval Hospital, Guam, Ex. O. Naval Medical Clinic, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Ex. O. Naval Medical Command, C.O. Medical Unit Self-Contained Transportable, Camp Lejeune, NC.
He married his wife Carolyn Kaighin of Cummings, KS in 1956. Besides his wife he is survived by their two sons Gary Lindsay and his wife Janet of Columbia, IL and David Lindsay and his wife Carla of Cummings, KS. 4 grandchildren Tina, Kelly, Heather and Trevor Lindsay. Brothers and sisters Tessie Nieman, Jack Lindsay, Bonnie Harvey and Ed Lindsay.
He was preceded in death by his sister Vickie Delong.
