Viola Schwantes
Services for Viola M. Schwantes were held at 10 a.m. May 11, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Steve Souther officiated, and Don Gibson was the organist. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Marty Gibson, Jim Lewis, Benn Gibson, Dr. Chandy Samuel, Jack Brubaker and James P. McCaw Jr.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church and Southwestern College.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Fola Campbell
CEDAR VALE - Fola M. Campbell, 88, of Cedar Vale, died May 12, 2001, at Medicalodge in Arkansas City. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Wheeler Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established with the Cedar Vale High School Athletic Department.
Campbell was born April 12, 1913, near Cloverdale, to Loma (Dougherty) and Charles V. Shaff. She was raised in the Cloverdale area and attended rural schools and Sedan High School.
On Jan. 27, 1932, she married Ira Campbell in Winfield. He died in 1971. She was a farm wife and homemaker.
As a youth she joined the Cloverdale Methodist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Bonnie Campbell, Cedar Vale, Louise Burdette, Grenola, Maxine Griggs, Ponca City, and Jane Basler, Emporia; five sons, Kenneth Campbell, Shidler, Okla., Chet Campbell, Wyandotte, Okla., Mike Campbell and Bob Campbell, both of Cedar Vale, and Ron Campbell, Seminole, Okla.; two brothers, Vance Shaff, Herlong, Calif., and Ralph Shaff, Sedan; a sister, Dorothy Bohannan, Wichita; 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Two daughters, Shirley Campbell and Sharon Groom, preceded her in death.
Phillip Bowman
ARKANSAS CITY - Phillip Dwane Bowman, 56, of Arkansas City, died May 13, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Newkirk City Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Bowman was born Oct. 22, 1944, in Ponca City, to Mary (Martin) and John Phillip Bowman. He was raised and educated in Newkirk and graduated from high school in 1963. He later attended Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa and Oklahoma State University at Stillwater.
He served in the Army National Guard for many years.
On Nov. 20, 1987, he married Rebecca Miley in Newkirk. They made their home in Arkansas City.
Bowman was an engine mechanic at the Strother Field plant of General Electric.
Survivors include his wife, Becki Bowman, and a daughter, Lori Moulton, both of Arkansas City; two stepsons, Tech. Sgt. Christopher T. Fraley, Elgin Air Force Base, Fla., and Shawn Fraley, Chanute; a brother, Wendell Bowman, Oklahoma City; and one granddaughter.
Harriett McIntire
ARKANSAS CITY - Harriett Jeanette "Jan" McIntire, 77, of Arkansas City, died May 12, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Loren Grimes will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
McIntire was born Aug. 26, 1923, in Arkansas City, to Harriett "Vivian" (Thompson) and Joseph Waymon Mauldin. She was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1941. In 1943 she graduated from Arkansas City Junior College.
During World War II she served in the U.S. Navy.
After her discharge, she worked in Chicago for the Pullman Co. as a bank teller. She later moved to New York City.
On Oct. 16, 1954, she married William McIntire. They moved to Arkansas City in 1967 after he retired from the Army. He died in 1989.
In 1974 McIntire began working for Gordon Piatt Energy Group. She worked as a literature clerk and later a mail room clerk for over 20 years.
She was a member and past president of the Business and Professional Women's Club in Arkansas City, the Ark City Women's Bowling Association and the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.
Survivors include four sons, Chris McIntire, San Diego, Andy McIntire, Winfield, Dennis McIntire, Liberty, Mo., and David McIntire, Wichita; two daughters, Trish McIntire, Arkansas City, and Maureen Olson, Iola; two brothers, John Coupe, Rock, and James Mauldin, Raytown, Mo.; a sister, Margaret Grimes, Brooks, Ore.; and 14 grandchildren.
Steven Meyer
ARKANSAS CITY - Steven Don Meyer, 42, of Arkansas City, died May 14, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Parker Cemetery. Vern Richerson will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the Sleep Medicine Education and Research Foundation. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Meyer was born May 29, 1958, in Arkansas City, to Bonnie L. (Admire) and Donald John Meyer. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1976.
On Sept. 16, 1983, he married Cindy A. Tilley in Winfield. They made their home in Arkansas City.
Meyer was an assembler at Western Manufacturing and Montgomery-Kone.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy Meyer, two sons, Jason Don Meyer and Christopher Steven Meyer, and a daughter, Stevi Dawn Meyer, all of Arkansas City; his parents, Don and Bonnie Meyer, Winfield; and two sisters, Judy Cantu, Newkirk, and Sandy Emerson, Sour Lake, Texas.
Anthony Sabato
ARKANSAS CITY - Anthony L. Sabato, 81, of Arkansas City, died May 10, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
His body was donated to the University of Kansas Medical School in Kansas City. There will be no service. Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Sabato was born Nov. 19, 1919, in Cumberland, Wis., to Carmela (Delmoneco) and Michael Sabato.
On Aug. 28, 1954, he married Mary Helen McDowell in Wichita. She died in July 1991.
A pilot during World War II, Sabato earned the Purple Heart.
He worked as a security guard for Pinkerton Securities, worked in manufacturing for several years and retired from Safelite Auto.
He was a member of the American Legion and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include a stepson, Clifford D. Wolf, Olathe; a stepdaughter, Nancy Shackelford, Nashville, Tenn.; four stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Fola Campbell
CEDAR VALE - Services for Fola M. Campbell were held at 10:30 a.m. May 16, 2001, in the Cedar Vale First Baptist Church. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch officiated. Burial was in Rock Creek Cemetery.
Evelyn Upchurch was the organist, and Jim and Jan Miller were the vocalists. Music included "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
Casket bearers were Campbell's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with the Cedar Vale High School Athletic Department.
Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale was in charge of arrangements.
Fern McRoberts
Fern E. McRoberts, 84, of Winfield, died May 15, 2001, at Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to service time Friday.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
McRoberts was born Nov. 20, 1916, in Watova, Okla., to Bessie and Otto Brashear. She graduated from Nowata (Okla.) High School in 1934. Her family moved to Winfield that same year.
On May 6, 1936, she married Wallace E. McRoberts in Winfield. They made their home at 2020 Loomis and owned and operated McRoberts Oil Co. & Gas Station. For 14 years she was employed by William Newton Hospital in food service.
McRoberts' husband died April 14, 1977.
She moved to the Loving Care Home and later to Good Samaritan Village.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Rebekah Lodge and Cherokee Campers Association.
Survivors include two sisters, Vesta Brant, Dodge City, and Irma Dean Lawrence, Goddard.
